Unpopular opinion of mine: If Billie Joe ever did a solo album, I think it would signify the true end of Green Day.

yes i don't want him to do a solo album soon. it would be just too weird and i prefer when they're all together. (who doesn't?)
it sure would be a great record no doubts but right now they better keep playing as a band.

True. I feel like whenever artists with bands go solo, they get too sappy and love-songy. Gross.

I don't know if a solo album by Billie Joe would do so well.

He's an absolutely phenomenal musician, but I feel like part of what makes that is having Mike and Tre by his side.

I really wish people would stop trying to compare everything to Dookie.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Dookie just as much as the next person. But it's one album out of eleven, or even twelve if you count Shenanigans. Was it amazing and influential and huge in GD's career? Yes. But bands change and the members evolve, and with that, their music evolves. We can't hold on to 1994 forever. Green Day isn't going to make an album that sounds like Dookie, because that was something they already did and it's been almost twenty years since then. They're going to experiment with other sounds and continue to evolve and do what they do.

I mean, this is basically the reason why I don't like it when people do that "Dookie-fying" thing to the newer material. It's a cool idea for covers and whatnot, but I just feel like people spend way too much time dwelling on the fact that GD's new stuff isn't just like Dookie~! and not enough time actually appreciating what this amazing band has already given us.

It's also good that it isn't Dookie. Because like, ok yeah, when I'm 17, it's a great thing to listen to. I'll listen to Dookie until I'm too high to function. But when you grow up, you're gonna get sick and tired of listening to Billie Joe saying he doesn't wanna get a job. And then you can move onto other albums that cover different themes and different sounds and then suddenly you have a Green Day album or song for every single emotion (actually, that's probably true). What would I have listened to in 2008 when I was taking my politics class in high school if American Idiot weren't a thing? Sure as hell not Dookie, that's for sure.

And it's kind of unrelated to what I'm saying, but probably belongs in this thread: I don't even like Dookie, really. Their way older stuff is just kind of boring to me (again, probably because I'm not 17). Insomniac is where things start to get real, and then they just get better from there. Also I hate When I Come Around. Even at shows I'm like "Can we just skip this?" Basket Case is a good song, Pulling Teeth is brilliant, but the rest of the CD is completely forgettable.

First paragraph, I agree 150%.

And as for the last part, I have to agree a little bit on that, too. Dookie isn't really my favourite album of theirs; it actually doesn't even make my top five. There's a few songs on it that I adore (She, Basket Case,When I Come Around) but most of it I'm not too keen on. I actually prefer 1039/SOSH and Kerplunk to Dookie (though those two actually do make my top five, so.)

I mean, I understand that it was a super influential album that helped to define an era of music, and for that reason, I get why some people might call it legendary. But personally, in terms of just musical taste? I don't really get the hype.

Maybe not an "unpopular opinion" per se, but I don't know where else to put this... :/

"Juliana Homicide" ("All fucked up beyond intervention..."-"...'cause California's burning down tonight") should be its own song.

Wait you don't like She..?

what the fuck does it change if you're 17 or not? that doesn't make any sense.

I don't care for it, no!

Because when you're 17 (15, 16, 17, you know..) you can relate to it more. One of GD's most powerful aspects is the ability to relate perfectly to the audience. But the audience changes. Grows up. And then you want to relate all over again, but with different things. My pronouns and articles are all fucked up in here but what the hell it isn't an essay.

Edit: So the themes and subjects in Dookie mostly come up as a teenager. That's how it makes sense.

okay but what i didn't understand is that you think the album is boring because you're now 20?

no matter the age you have a good album stays a good album no? well that's how i see it.

I think it's that certain styles of music appeal differently to certain age groups. Somebody who's, say, thirty isn't going to relate to some of the subject matter on Dookie the way somebody who's seventeen might.

edit: well i posted this a little late in the conversation oops.

I was we'll into my 20's when dookie was released & it was amazing to me - totally hooked me. So I was a long way over what happens as a teenager. When I come around is still my favourite song & it is still my favourite album albeit for sentimental reasons.

I can honestly say that I agree with you. Part of the "magic" of Green Day is Billie having Mike, Tre, and Jason by his side. Hell, even Jason Freese and Jeff! All their personalities coming together truly signifies what Green Day is, in my opinion.

Because I freaking love 21CBD and the pageantry/epic scale of the live shows they put on when they were touring to support the album. I miss all of that. I miss the pyrotechnics and the light displays and the drama of the live shows. I miss the lyrics driven by a mix of social commentary and the deeply emotional combined with the powerful, dramatic instrumentals, all of it connecting to an over-arching album theme. I miss it way more than I normally care to admit and I'd like it back, please.

This description is more epic than it actually was. The tour was phenomenal. Absolutely amazing. But 21CB wasn't all that epic. It had its moments though.

Musically it was their most epic album they've done

Eh I'd still say AI was the most epic. So much more life and energy. 21CB dragged along most of the time. Lots of variation, but albums need "mojo" to be truly epic.

Obviously if Billie Joe Armstrong releases a solo album, that would be the end of Green Day. :P But I don't doubt for a second it would be great. Watch his collaborations with other artists if you want to get a taste of what he would be like solo. Or his acoustic encores. I'm not saying I want Green Day to break up, but I think BJA would make a killer solo-acoustic album.

I'm not saying the album would be shit. I'm saying it would be the end of the band, and I'd rather have the entire band instead of Billie Joe and a guitar.

I agree, no argument here

I found the album to be really epic, actually. I was in love with it from the moment I heard "Song of the Century." I listened to it straight through countless times from the day it was released until the day I saw the band on tour, which was over a year for me and it lost none of its power. It still has the ability to give me chills.

Ok but listening to an album a lot doesn't make it good lol. I once said Green Day was better than Blink-182 and defended that with the fact that I could name all of Green Day's albums. Granted I was young and naive back then, but don't fall into the same trap.

American Idiot to me is a better album. It's more streamlined and relatable. A clear storyline too. 21CB is produced in a grandoise fashion, I'll give you that. But in terms of accomplishing its goal, it doesn't do the trick for me. Overly complicated lyrics. Lack of humor makes it seem far too serious for a Green Day album. I felt like it was Green Day saying "Woah...you guys liked American Idiot? Hmm want some more?" Don't get me wrong, it has a lot of great tracks. Just too serious and not as fun/catchy.

And additionally, for all the grandiosity and intricacy you claim it to have, most of the songs still rely on powerchords and basic song structure.

Um, power chords doesn't mean they are not good, complicated songs. A song can have deep, complex, intricate lyrics and still be structured on power chords for the main riff.

Also, American Idiot was built on mostly power chords, and you're not giving it any of the shit you're giving 21CB. You can't criticize one for being basic and simple while the other one you're praising is built around the exact same musical concept.

The lyrics were highly overcomplicated, so to me they don't "save" the songs. Idk why 21CB gets so much love here. Probably because it's the first GD album most of you ever heard. 21 Guns and all.

I love 21st and Dookie was the first cd I heard in 94...

Tho my complaints is Christain's Inferno should've been left off 21 Guns is a good song but it is a bit longer than it should've been

Scary emo Green Day fan girls are worse than JB fans and are mostly zombies who agree with ANYTHING Green Day related.
