Lyrically speaking, I think that Worry Rock is the best song on Nimrod.

with the Grouch. eww that album is genius.

i still have difficulty to believe what Billie said in cuatro. that he had to write the lyrics while in the studio.

Worry Rock is my favorite.

Nimrod is great.

I think what he said about writing the lyrics last minute in studio was true but only for a couple songs. Uptight, Jinx, Last Ride In, All The Time, Take Back are my guesses.

Amen. As I said in another thread a while ago, when I first heard Oh Love play at work I was like "Why don't these guys just give up?" to a customer. Love 'em, but they could so do better. Or at least something more original...

How about no.

more original? it's their own song. how much more original can you get?

i'm confused. i don't think it sounds like anything they've ever done before.

and "why don't these guys just give up?" - that's a shitty attitude you have towards a band you're a fan of.

To be fair, she has a point. Oh Love didn't exactly inspire much hope in me when I first heard it either. On first listen I thought it was dreadful, and that if the rest of the 3 albums sounded like that Green Day might as well quit, because they'd just gone classic rock. Thankfully not every song is like that, and Oh Love is actually one of the songs I genuinely like from the trilogy. But I have no shame in admitting that on first listen Oh Love made me think "for fuck sake guys, is this really the best you can do?"

Oh Love is only the 3rd song to debut at #1 on Billboard Rock Songs chart. 'nuff said

That's not saying much, considering that was based 100% around hype and 0% around the actual quality of the song. I like it, but it wouldn't even make my top 1000 favourite songs. Not even close. Maybe top 5000.

The song was good.It may not be the best but it was surely the best choice for the lead single.Nuclear Family would not create THAT much of an impact as it's targeted towards the punk rock/grunge/alternative/any fucking form of rock audience and did not have that appeal for listeners of other genres.Same story with Stay The Night.Kill The DJ would have created a lot of criticism for green day had it been the lead single.Rusty James isn't exactly single material.Oh Love, on the other hand, had all qualities to excel on the charts. It's a shame it did not.

No, go away and let me be pissed about this

No, seriously I think it's harsh to judge 3 albums based on one song and saying how they should quit already. I get that people might not like the trilogy but that's not necessarily GD's death sentence :)

As for Oh love, I don't think hype is what sold the song. I've seen this said from various fans about various artists, but I really don't see how a hype makes people buy the song. The only people that will still support and buy it regardless are the fans. A song can be hyped up to the max, if it's shit most people won't buy it. Oh love is a nice song that targets a wider audience because of it's simple and relatable lyrics. Plus it was a good radio song (at least I heard it billion times here on the radio).

Like a slow metre, a boring riff, an overly long pre chorus and chorus, and the fact that it's 2 minutes longer than the average radio song? There's a reason the song tanked. It's a sucky radio song. It's a great album track, but there was no way it was gonna be a hit. Nuclear Family and Stay The Night both had potential. Simple 3 minute pop punk tunes. They'd still be getting airplay now if they'd been the opening single, but instead I think I heard Oh Love once on the radio and then it dived down the charts.

Of course it's harsh to judge 3 albums on one song, but that's what a lead single is meant to do: give you a taste of what the albums will be like. And Oh Love genuinely inspired negative feelings towards them for me.

And come on, of course hype sells the songs. Remember, the reasons songs climb up the charts these days is requests, not people buying the single. That means songs by big bands/artists will ALWAYS do well in their first week, and if they're a bit rubbish they'll drop fairly quickly. Oh Love isn't a good radio song, for the reasons I've mentioned above. Sure it has nice relatable lyrics, but listen to pop music these days. How many people actually go for relatable music? And yeah, I think I heard it once on the radio here.

the way you put it was a much better way than she put across. and I definitely get that whole level of disappointment because I was like that as well, I just didn't like the way she came across about it, that's all.

Sure, but not every lead single has been chosen wisely. And if you think back on all the previous lead singles of Green Day or any other band for that matter, it never really gets across what the album is actually like. And I think really no song on Uno could get across what the whole trilogy would be like as a whole. I'll admit that I wasn't blown away by it either at first, but it's a HUGE grower, at least for me.

To a certain extent, but not on hype alone. There isn't even a real hype anywhere outside a fan community, because other casual fans/listeners mostly don't even know anything is coming out until they hear it on the radio. And I disagree, there is so much rubbish high on the charts for a long time

You can't really compare pop music alone to Oh Love though. Pop music in general isn't listened to because of the lyrics and if a song has a sick beat and melody people are more likely to overlook crappy lyrics. But when you have rock songs, pop listeners don't necessarily connect to the music and melody in the background, they'll listen to the lyrics more closely. That's what I gathered from all my pop-listening friends all over the world.

I dunno, American Idiot summed up American Idiot pretty well for me :P

Whenever a band as big as Green Day releases new material, theres always hype, drummed up by advertising. How else do you think they get such massive sales? It's not from the fanbase alone. The trilogy is actually a bad example of this, because the promotion was fucking awful, and probably another reason why it was a huge flop.

To be honest, what else can I compare it to? It's going out on the radio, thats what it's competing with. And in all fairness, Oh Love is probably up there with Green Day's poppiest material. It has a serious classic rock vibe, and the lyrics are a little cheesy. It even has a catchy hook, essential for any pop song.

I love "Oh love". One of my favorite songs of the Triology :)

Posted

^ Same! I love it ever since it came out as a single. Though, I agree that it wasn't a great choice to put it as a first single. Probably because it's different from their other stuff and maybe that's the reason that most of the fans rejected it. But that shouldn't have had an impact on the rest of the trilogy, imo.

Song definitely don't deserve all the hate it gets. It's catchy, great sing-along and fits perfectly for a closing song on Uno as well.

Sometimes people really seem to forget that! At first I felt unsure, but after listening and seeing how the guys enjoy playing all the songs of the trilogy I started to like it very much! :D

I think Mike isn't ageing very well.

When Oh Love was first uploaded I was disappointed, I was expecting something more like Dookie/Insomniac. Now I think Oh Love is a nice song, just a terrible first single.

I think Mike isn't ageing very well.

We'll have to agree to disagree then :P

1. It sounded like typical Green Day to me. I'm not the only fan who's bored of it.

2. Being a fan does not mean I have to like everything they do. Love my cat, but damn she's an idiot. If you are hiding your true feelings about a band just because you like them, then you are just a little fucked up.

the way you put it was a much better way than she put across. and I definitely get that whole level of disappointment because I was like that as well, I just didn't like the way she came across about it, that's all.

I was like. Telling a story. Damn people, lighten up.

Yes they do. Everything they do, they do for me. They sent me Oh Love in a cassette last summer and I sent is back with RUBBISH written on the cover and I ripped out all the tape. The motherfuckers released it anyway and fired me. I'm just so bitter that I have to come on sites like this upset all the fans who like Oh Love.

And on a final note for me, I love Oh Love. That was MERELY the first listen's reply. A short story. The end.

If Green Day made their music JUST for us, we probably wouldn't have Nightlife, Kill the DJ, etc. Billie said that if fans wanted another "Dookie", it'd have to be inspired, not because they have to.
