Crimpshrine Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 What do you mean "for decades"? They released only a few albums because of the inner turmoil in the band and Sid Vicious' continuing addiction to drugs. In my opinion, if they had been able to hold it together and release more music it would have been absolutely phenomenal. Green Day wouldn't have existed without the Sex Pistols. It's a fact. The Sex Pistols invented punk rock. You know what made Green Day happen? Punk rock. You don't have to like the Sex Pistols, but in my opinion if you like Green Day, you do have to respect them. This argument is absolutely pointless because it's Johnny Rotten. Literally, he doesn't have a nice word to say about anybody. He hates on the Sex Pistols, who were his own band. i'm with you dude..!

Eva Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Wasn't it the stooges or MC5 that invented punk rock ? One things for sure it was not the sex pistolsNo, it wasn't the Sex Pistols but the Sex Pistols were the ones that made it well known. Besides, this is about Green Day and the Sex Pistols, not who invented punk rock. Billie cites the Sex Pistols as influences, not MC5 (as far as I know). And MC5 was around two or three years before the Stooges were formed but it was all around the same time. False. MC5, The Stooges, and The Ramones were playing punk music over half a decade before Never Mind... This was released in 1969, 8 years before the Sex Pistols. Tell me this isn't punk. The Pistols definitely kickstarted the wave of British punk. But it was inevitable that punk would cross the Atlantic anyway. As I said, the Sex Pistols made it known. Kick Out the Jams (motherfuckers...) was huge in Michigan but it didn't have the widespread influence that the Sex Pistols ended up having. I will admit that I prefer MC5 to the Sex Pistols. Both were influential though, and in Green Day's case, the Sex Pistols were more influential than MC5. edit: This argument is pointless because no one will ever agree on who invented punk rock and it's not really related to Johnny Rotten not liking Green Day anyway.
Guest DisapppearingBoy Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 hey, can anyone post that butter commercial? lol
Eva Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 hey, can anyone post that butter commercial? lol Someone already did, I think. Just look a little farther up the page.
BJA_SA Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Settle down there, Johnny. At least Green Day has changed their sound and style over the years to grow as a group and stay at the top and relevant and be one of the worlds best bands. You just did the same rebellious type thing (which grows old) and thing is The Clash were a better band.
spark in the night Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 LOL again? How many threads do we have that start with "John Lydon bashing Green Day"
Eva Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 LOL again? How many threads do we have that start with "John Lydon bashing Green Day" Actually this one says Johnny Rotten.
Kill_the_Lamp Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 He's just awful, he's a bitter old man with bitter goals in life He's a grouch

If you use dates and such to argue the birth of Punk it usually comes back to New York at some point. If the Sex Pistols, though, hadn't gone on 60 minutes back in the day than we wouldn't have had the punk scene that came into the California East Bay in the late 70's and stayed up until today. I'm a Theatre Tech - Sound Desisn/Music History major.. I spend way to much time looking at this kind of shit

I count the New York Dolls and Ramones as the real start of punk but the Sex Pistols were the ones that made people learn that it existed. Well, people other than New Yorkers.
frenchfryjordan Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Some other guy from the Sex Pistols was being a prick about them, too, a while back. I think Billie called him a cranky old man. I personally see the Ramones as a much larger influence than the Sex Pistols anyway. And now the debate about what punk is begins.................
Hero_Of_The_Hour Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Yeah, selling some innocuous dairy product to pay one's mortgage is way worse than peddling your records on tawdry reality shows like American Idol and The Voice. There is simply NO justification for Im A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here...that was or should have been the final nail in his pathetic coffin. What record was he flogging when he hung out in a jungle boosting his celeb factor with Jordan and Peter Andre?! And yeah a butter commercial where the punchline is about how great it is to be British from the guy who sang God Save The Queen?! Yeah...clearly promoting your record on tv shows, however lame, is way worse than becoming the exact thing you claim to hate. Rotten is a fool...pity as the Pistols were awesome but i guess times change.
No Future Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Coldplay sucks, Artic Monkeys sucks, Jay-z sucks, Ozzy Osbourne sucks, Green day sucks. Everything sucks by him. It's just an old guy complaining all over again. Ooh and did he said he loved Lady Gaga? Ignore shit people saying about Green Day, just like they said, their always people pointing at them because of their commercial succes. If Green Day was still an underground punkrock band, he doesn't complain. Still didn't Glen Matlock defended Green Day? : http://www.contactmusic.com/news-article/matlock-defends-green-day_14_02_2006 A lot of bands praised Green Day, but there's still one old man complaining about them everytime, we all know it right Johnny. Punkrockers don't care, they do whatever they want to do, and if they don't like it, they letting you know.
The Disappearing Boy Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Butter career not going too well then?
ThiagoMN Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Ramones, NY Dolls, MC5 and other early US bands may have invented the musical style but it was the Pistols who created the attitude. "Q: It's been 20 years since the last PiL album. Why did it take you so long? A: "Not my choice. The record company and contract obligations kept me in a state of non-recoupment and I had to outwait them. It was a very difficult time for me, almost like a state of mental starvation. You're gagging at the bit to work, and music's my life. But I found that the law worked against me, all the corporations and accountants. So I had a very negative view of business-as-usual." " Source: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/05/25/entertainment-us-johnlydon-idUSBRE84O0EI20120525 So he had to do the commercial to get the funding to be able to make money from music again. Yeah...I get that there's a lot of things behind making music in a grand scale. There's contratcts and all the other things he talked about. But come on. Really. You buy that??? The record company is the one to be blamed for them not having a new record for 20 years??? I mean...Prince...and I don't like his music, particularly...but I'll use him as an example...in the '90's he had problems with his record company...his solution...change his name and put out records anyway. Johnny is full of shit....he's always been full of shit...and always rested on the laurels of his past band (Pistols). What I meant to say was....I'm a fan of the Pistols...not so much of PIL...and I did not like this new PIL record. Maybe you did and that's OK...when it comes to art everyone's right. I just think nowadays, our dear old Johnny only gets press when he talks shit about people more succesful than him. Pointing fingers is easy...but do you really think the Sex Pistols or PIL for that matter, are better than Green Day. And...one last thing...the Pistols didn't create that atittude...Malcolm McLaren did...he told them how to act and how to dress...he's said so in many interviews...Johnny says otherwise...but come on...he's full of shit...and this is coming from a fan who went to the Pistols reunion show in 1997 just to see them live. I'm a big fan of the Pistols...but this thing that Johnny has of just saying other bands suck seems fake to me. I mean...it lacks depth, you know. He things Green Day sucks cause they took something he "invented" and made bigger than he ever did. That's why he hates GD. Not because they suck...they're good...if they weren't we ( me and you and everyone else in this forum) wouldn't be here!!!

Sarahnade Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 This butter advert is quite a masterpiece. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mSE-Iy_tFY I suppose he's entitled to his opinion, however invalid it may be.
Akshat Posted December 30, 2012 Author Posted December 30, 2012 Actually no other member of Sex Pistols has spoken about Green Day.It's only this guy.I think he is pissed because he caught Billie on the bed with his wife maybe(Before Billie married 80, of course). You need to Earn your respect. You don't get it just by bitching about other people and their work. When Billie smashed that guitar at iheart, many people came for his support, because they respect the music. From Alanis Morrisette to Blink to Metallica, everyone.Has anyone given a damn about what sex pistols are upto , apart from green day itself? They need to this this kind of stuff to stay relevant.I would have loved it if Billie smashed that guitar on Johnny.I think the title dirty rotten bastards was inspired from him. Green Day has always been a voice of the anti-american sentiments during bush era.For the love of their fans they released 3 albums, not caring about the commercial and critical loss they had(and we still keep bitching about the trilogy )What has rotten done apart from selling butter? That Hypocrite
That Punk Kid. Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Do I listen to the Sex Pistols because they're British? Do I listen to the Sex Pistols because I yearn for the raw punk sound? Or because they only had one album? Nah, I listen to the Sex Pistols because I think they sound not near as good as Green Day. good. Still disagreeing with Lydon on his statement though... I need to get some of that butter.
~ Walking Contradiction Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I've found this interview from 1997, it's quite interesting DIRNT: I met Steve Jones. He seemed like a real nice guy. I didn't know who he was at first; I actually thought he was a reporter or something like that. It was nice to meet him. I invited him out for a beer, but he doesn't drink any more. ARMSTRONG: I like his guitar playing a lot. I love the Pistols' old songs; the lyrics are really great. And I really like Johnny Rotten's book a lot [Rotten: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs, St. Martin's, 1994]. But now, he sounds like my grandmother, at times. He really sounds old. And he's so predictable in his comments about us. I mean, be a bit more novel. Try and come up with something new. On top of that, some of the stuff from P.I.L. [Rotten's post-Pistols group] was complete shit, as far as I'm concerned. DIRNT: If they're the spirit of punk rock, then punk rock is dead. And the spirit is floating around like a ghost. We've been asked to do beer commercials and shit like that, and we don't do 'em. ARMSTRONG: Yeah, those Schlitz and Mountain Dew commercials are paying the bills lately for Johnny Rotten. Doing a beer commercial, for someone of that stature, is pathetic. You have to admit he is a bit full of shit. Excuse me, full of Schlitz. They kept asking us to open a couple of shows, but...nah.
