Caractériel Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mSE-Iy_tFY He doesn't believe in Green Day, or fashion awards, but he sure as shit believes in flogging butter to the British public. He's a hypocrite, who can't stand the fact that the bands he continually slags off achieved more mainstream success than he did. He's a parody of himself.

You can't take him seriously, at all. imbecile
Amanda Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Can we have the butter commercial one more time please, with feeling. I think the guy at the back with the IQ of a peanut needs to see it again
Gregorovich Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Musical talent has nothing to do with the validity of an argument. In terms of cultural significance the Pistols are one of the best. Cultural significance, fame or influence should NEVER be the reason you listen to music. Neither does it make a band better. A shit band starting a new wave of British punk is still a shit band.

He's a hypocrite, who can't stand the fact that the bands he continually slags off achieved more mainstream success than he did. He's a parody of himself. When he plays the kinda music he plays with PiL, it's quite clear that mainstream success is not what he's about.
IsaGreenDay Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Musically and lyrically Green Day is better, but talking about the influence... The Sex Pistols are bigger. And what can we expect about their leader? Being angry and a bit stupid is part of his image, he won't stop.
Eva Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 When he plays the kinda music he plays with PiL, it's quite clear that mainstream success is not what he's about. I'd think it's obvious that Rotten's not about mainstream success. When the Sex Pistols first started, punk rock was completely new. A lot of bands could barely afford to make it to the next town to play a gig. If Rotten was about mainstream success, he wouldn't have been in a punk rock band.
Guest Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Never really like the guy, thought it was hilarious that he was in a butter commerical though. He's a typical "I hate other genres" type of guy. Doesn't bug me because there's worse. Haha.
Liam Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Again, this is old news. And in the wrong sub forum. Cool, report it next time and let the us deal with it.
Vic_Rattlehead Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Firstly, I don't think it's fair for him to say that stuff about Green Day, but let's get a couple of things clear: 1) Anyone who says the Sex Pistols were not talented and did nothing are kidding themselves, the Pistols were a huge cultural phenomenon, and were very important to the growth and advancement of popular music in the 1970's. 2) Let's not forget that if the Sex Pistols hadn't existed, there would be no Green Day (I seem to recall reading that their song "Holidays in the Sun" is what turned Billie on to punk, and away from the metal he was listening to at the time). As a few people have said, Lydon is a hypocrite, and he's trying to make the headlines. However, on other issues, he's a very well-informed person, just watching an interview with him will tell you that much. He's also bitter, because while the Pistols were a band manufactured by Malcolm McLaren to promote his clothing shop, Green Day worked their way up from nothing to become one of the most successful bands ever, especially during the 90's. So he has good reason to be jealous of Green Day's success, but he also feels like they owe him something (which they don't) due to his involvement with the punk movement. Sorry for the rant!
Insomniac1984 Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Is this a déja vu??? Johnny Rotten saying the same old shit again....
Eva Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Is this a déja vu??? Johnny Rotten saying the same old shit again.... What do you expect? It's Johnny Rotten.
Akshat Posted December 28, 2012 Author Posted December 28, 2012 I would love to see Billie respond to this thing. One fucking minute style
Rabby Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 That's a bit too much saying "They deserve 0% of the praise they have achieved and are about as musically talented as your average X-Factor contestant." They made the album which made punk music start in the UK. heard the album, and it's not that good IMO
StuckWithRob Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Cultural significance, fame or influence should NEVER be the reason you listen to music. Neither does it make a band better. A shit band starting a new wave of British punk is still a shit band. Yes but a member of a band, no matter how poor (according to personal opinion), who furthermore has had success and experience, is allowed to have a valid opinion about a fellow band. The attitude that you have to reach some level of musical talent/success before you can exist in the musical world is the exact opposite of what bands like Green Day and the Sex Pistols are about.
Guest DisapppearingBoy Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Actually i've got nothing to say. Maybe he's punk enough to say that since Green Day are mainstream. "Johnny B. Rotten tonight You'd better hold that lid on tight You don't want to get in a fight You'd better hold that lid on tight"
Gregorovich Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Yes but a member of a band, no matter how poor (according to personal opinion), who furthermore has had success and experience, is allowed to have a valid opinion about a fellow band. The attitude that you have to reach some level of musical talent/success before you can exist in the musical world is the exact opposite of what bands like Green Day and the Sex Pistols are about. Except for the fact that throughout their long career, Green Day have all become much better musicians. And Green Day is not 'about' anything like The Sex Pistols. The Sex Pistols are about, and have been about for decades, teen angst and 'sticking it to the man'. Green Day, like many modern rock bands, are about making the best music you can for your fans because you love it. That is why I respect Green Day and not The Sex Pistols. Oh, and talent and success are VERY different things. Success means nothing to me, with or without talent. It just so happens that as the years go on, more and more talentless artists are able to slip through the net and become successful.
DoubleTen95 Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 I love the Sex Pistols music but not the guys, especially Rotten. He's a complete attention whore. So, I ignore him. Same here
kate_ochoxx Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 I just.. really dont respect the Sex Pistols I never have, sorry guys
BazingaofSuburbia Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Can I ask why does he hate Green Day so much? I've never liked that man in general tbh, he scares me
That Punk Kid. Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 I just lost respect for him... Don't diss Green Day for "not being punk" when you've done commercials for butter.
Joey Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Yeah, selling some innocuous dairy product to pay one's mortgage is way worse than peddling your records on tawdry reality shows like American Idol and The Voice.
Hermione Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Yeah, selling some innocuous dairy product to pay one's mortgage is way worse than peddling your records on tawdry reality shows like American Idol and The Voice. Not to mention selling yourself on tawdy reality shows like Judge Judy and I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Oh no wait that was Lydon . Difference is I haven't heard Green Day going around being massive hypocrites slagging other people off for "selling out".

It just so happens that as the years go on, more and more talentless artists are able to slip through the net and become successful. What do you mean "for decades"? They released only a few albums because of the inner turmoil in the band and Sid Vicious' continuing addiction to drugs. In my opinion, if they had been able to hold it together and release more music it would have been absolutely phenomenal. Green Day wouldn't have existed without the Sex Pistols. It's a fact. The Sex Pistols invented punk rock. You know what made Green Day happen? Punk rock. You don't have to like the Sex Pistols, but in my opinion if you like Green Day, you do have to respect them. This argument is absolutely pointless because it's Johnny Rotten. Literally, he doesn't have a nice word to say about anybody. He hates on the Sex Pistols, who were his own band.

MC5, The Stooges, and The Ramones were playing punk music over half a decade before Never Mind... This was released in 1969, 8 years before the Sex Pistols. Tell me this isn't punk. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iM6nasmkg7A The Pistols definitely kickstarted the wave of British punk. But it was inevitable that punk would cross the Atlantic anyway.
