I think they'll need another big album to get inducted on the Rock hall Of fame anytime soon. I don't see them getting inducted for another 10-20 years.

I honestly hope they do a serious album now, not a sad or depressing one, but just serious. No songs like Fwoo Time or Makeout Party.

lol "fwoo" time!

I fell in love with Green Day due to their concept albums... i know mike said they closed a decade of concept albums.. but i would be overjoyed if they made another rock opera.. or at least an album that focuses more on the lyrics..

Insomniac is my favorite album. It has been since 1995. I think if the trilogy, specifically Uno and Tre, had the same type of distortion/guitar tones as Insomniac, it could have been something special.

To be honest, I have actually heard some distortion on trilogy songs like Let Yourself Go and Brutal Love. The album with the most distortion and the best distortion was American Idiot (my favorite album). Actually Boulevard of Broken Dreams might be their most distorted song to date.

I totally agree with releasing the Dookie and American Idiot albums with extras. Maybe the B-sides and demos and like what was mentioned above, the documentary. And a new greatest hits. Plus the AI movie. Maybe the guys will write like one more new song for the credits or something. And if they don't do anniversary releases then why not an Anthology or something like The Beatles did. I know a lot of the studio demos are already online but I'd like to hear them in a decent quality (I hate listening to mono with my headphones).

As for new album, I'd say 2015 or 16. I expect darker, songs inspired by Billie's rehab and all of that. Maybe something that goes way against the dance/pop trend we have now.

Where are the American Idiot demoes?

I should've been more specific. I've Dookie demos online. I imagine the band still has the AI demos.

This whole trilogy felt like a throwback to their entire back catalog, which was a good thing.

They can only move forward from here, otherwise things will start to get really repetitive.

I'm hoping they can come up with something really different and fresh, like a new turning point for them ala Dookie and AI.

let me see billie doing well on promotion or something first :P

I have two ideas that I think could be kind of cool.

-Billie writes a concept album about his whole rehab experience. Like, literally about a rich and famous rockstar with a little-known substance addiction who has a meltdown in front of the world, then has to build himself back up. I think this could be amazing if done right.

-They say "fuck popularity" and make the heaviest album of their careers. Like, a full album of fast punk rock songs in the vein of Platypus, Jaded, St. Jimmy, and the middle part of Dirty Rotten Bastards. This would be awesome as hell. Would probably never happen though.

I myself see their next album having a Nimrod sort of sound. It's just a perfect time to mix old and new after the trilogy and everything. And knowing them who knows, maybe they'll keep making double and triple albums! I honestly see another greatest Hits album in less than 10 years too.

Well after Billie's rehab stint I wouldn't be surprised if the next album is more serious and reflective...they could use Lazy Bones as a reference point and build an album up around that.

My guess, new side project in a couple years. Not like one they've done before. Kinda like pinhead gunpowder but better. I can see lots of dirnt vocals and clashy type underground-like music.

Then a poltically conscious gd album, not like AI or 21CB, more mature, while experimenting with more strings etc.

But hey I really don't want to think about it too much. Tre is really good and I think it is the last we will hear for the most part of the nimrod, warning type sound.

You're wrong. They'll get in the year after Nirvana gets in. So that would be like 2016-2017.

Oh sure, because you can predict when a band is for sure going to be inducted

Well obviously no I can't predict what is going to happen every time. But based on formulas for the qualifications and critics' and musicians' opinions it looks like they will get in soon. For it to take 10 to 20 years I just don't think is possible. The rock n roll hall of fame is not always about the very best music. It is about popularity, album sales, influence, and how big they were for their genre. I think green day fits all those qualifications pretty damn well.

i get the feeling green day has already had their highlight and now they're just making music because they love to. they made a brilliant statement with american idiot which influenced the music scene immensely. same with dookie previously. but now i don't think they'll achieve something like that again. not that they'll never make great music again. but more like music that is just fun to rock out to. i know green day likes to rock the boat a bit but they're a bit out of date now i think. i could be mistaken and in a few years they'll come out with something yet again amazing. but the general reaction to "green day" is "them old buggers?" so my hopes aren't too high for something groundbreaking.

how i said: we had this situation before with warning. and i don't care if some teens think they are "in" or "out". green day should stand above that. but to be honest: the only rock band that can create something with the impact of dookie or american idiot in the next years again are indeed: green day.

theres is nothing in sight which is a) quality rock music and b) can speak to a whole generation. we have a) and we have b) in todays music world. but not in this combination. but unfortunatly b) speaks just crap. nothing of it is relevant, nothing can shape a young people in their values, like green days work did.

i'm not saying the boring "todays music is crap", no its not. but good music with a message doesn't reach the people anymore in the way it did before.

well, i hope they take a break from songwriting. i want them to be inspired. But i also know that Billie Joe doesnt like taking time off, so who knows what is up next. I don't even think that they know what comes next.

I think the song writing will be very, very, poignant and deep considering what Billie Joe and the band have gone through. It is just a thought but maybe it will be more like a interconnecting storyline like American Idiot without characters like "St. Jimmy" etc. It might be very personal as opposed to the Trilogy. I am sure Billie Joe has a lot to write about. I think Green Day hasn't passed their "golden years" and will surprise again with an album that will be more widely appreciated. The trilogy was a break from the ultra serious to take a break without taking a break, if that makes sense. I still love UNO! And Dos! I haven't listen to Tre! because I'm old school and hate leaks.

Love this! This is exactly how I feel. Yes, to many "Dookie" and "American Idiot" were righteously in a league of their own. They both touched a broader listening base. Dookie pulled the kids away from grunge and into punk. American idiot touched young, old, people who were fans of all music. Just going to see the American Idiot musical and seeing people well into their 50's (my mom lol) and even 60's going to see it was just so awe inspiring. The thing is though, Green Day is a band that will never die out. So what if they never sell as many copies as American Idiot or Dookie. Their music will have meaning, be written from heart and soul, and rock hard!

Anyway, I agree wholeheartedly with what you have to say. And my friend, you are a true Green Day fan! Welcome to my world! :-) thanks for the great post!

a lot of these concepts are crazy

I would like to hear songs of the ilk of American Idiot album, or Let Yourself Go. I think a problem of the trilogy has been Green Day singing about things they are way too old for. They can still do politics and fuck you songs so I'd like more of that! But next up will be the AI movie and hopefully a 2013 tour, so album in 2015

It's a bit unfair to them saying "they are too old to sing about that" I don't see limits to them, or any human being to say anything that person would want. Seriously, I don't mind if Billie sings something about the sky, the greenest grass he ever seen or get fucked by a horse.

Age is just a number, not something that orders you what you can do.

For the next Green Day album, I don't know what I'd like to hear, something darker, as Insomniac, would be nice. But, please, stop using the clean distorsion. Sounds awful.

Agreed. No matter how old you are, you can talk about whatever you want.

I really don't think i'd like to wait more than a year or two for a new album (or more than one, who the hell knows?). It feels like they left us on such a nice note, that just wants you starving for more. I think the whole "recap/revelation" feeling of Tre is a great way to set the trilogy down (Cue X-Kid), and it's just one of those feelings that I can't even explain quite how it feels... like I can't stop listening to it [i'm listening to it right now as a matter of fact]. I got into Green Day right after 21stCB (I was maybe 9 or 10) and 21 Guns just kept coming on on the radio. I got hooked right then. I eventually started making my way into their earlier music, and those three years before this trilogy was certainly the best place to drop in if you were new to the band because it gave you enough time to fall in love before you were thrown into a mess that anyone that was remotely new could understand. Anyway, i'm getting way off topic. This band is my life, and I guess where I was going with this is that now after 3 years of nonstop listening to Old to New songs, and the brand new trilogy is coming to an end, i'm out of new music to learn about and study. I heard from a friend/fellow Green Day enthusiast (for lack of any other description) that they we're supposed to come out with an album around Valentines Day... I haven't found any evidence to back this up, and don't know whether he's just confusing it with the Cigarettes and Valentines album or the original release date for Tre, but I fear I may have gotten my hopes up too high about his reasoning. Green Day has been the only thing i've been engaged in for the last 3 years, and it ties into drumming too, so no new songs = no new songs and no more new songs to drum to =/ I guess we'll all have to wait and hold our breath, hoping our band will pull through to make us happy (geez, that sounds selfish...).

Sincerely,

A Green Day fan of 3 years...

Well, I can honestly say as long as they don't break up (which I highly doubt), and keep making music, I'll like it. No joke, I've literally loved all the music they've written, with the exception of maybe Take Back :P

I really hope they're back by march and april for the US postponed tour dates, they'd need to take all may to rest 'cause in june they start the full UK tour if not, they might not reschedule us until later on mid 2013, anyway my guess is that the next album should come out by 2016, but maybe we could have a live album called CINCO! in 2015, fingers crossed c:

I think they're capable of another great album, but I can't see them abandoning the classic pop-punk sound that makes up so much of the trilogy. They've made a lot of great songs that still have a sprinkling of Green Day over the top but otherwise don't quite fit that blueprint. I would love them to go further with the experimentation on the next one and make more songs like Brutal Love, Dirty Rotten Bastards, Wow That's Loud, Misery, Boulevard Of Broken Dreams. They're all quite different from what the band usually do and I think if they divorced these big ideas from being tied to a concept album and just concentrated on writing good songs, they could write an album as good as Dookie or American Idiot. I think they've always kinda been between a rock and a hard place on going too out there, since every album has at least a couple of speedy pop-punk numbers that they pretty much write on autopilot. I'd love for them to just go for it and abandon the need for songs that are immediate. I'd say it's the difference between Weezer's Blue Album and Pinkerton. Pinkerton just reaches for something darker and more advanced than the Blue Album, which is still absolutely great but it's poppier and has less depth.

I also think they should have more songs with sax in them, Jackass is great, King For A Day is great, The Static Age isn't even worth listening to on the record because the live sax solo is so good.

Well isn't it obvious?

They either split up...or...

Having had sooo much free time during his stint in rehab to "research" the general reaction to the trilogy Billie Joe was both shocked and angered by the frankly outrageous comments he read about how he was "too old" to be singing/writing songs like Fuck Time or Makeout Party etc. Indeed he was so angry he decided the next album should be a "big fuck you to everybody" and managed to write his first song entitled "I Love Unicorns And Laser Rainbows" in under three minutes...surely a record! Other songs on the album are rumored to be about the joy of faceswapping (written by Dirnt) and a charming number sang by Tre about horses...

Oh man, I love take back. Shows how much anger he had inside of him when he wrote that

Take Back is one of the best! My band used to cover it at gigs when we ran out of original songs hahaha.

Haha that's cool. For a song to only be a minute and that great is amazing.
