Is Green Day losing popularity?

The problem is I think Green Day *does* care about their success. I think it will bother them that this trilogy wasn't a smash hit. Mike said in one of those voiceovers "I got the same feeling making these that I had when we made Dookie and American Idiot." Those types of statements are completely loaded and carry a lot of weight, they imply that the band is obviously very conscious of the success of those two albums as generational icons, and to some extent knows or thinks they know when they are doing something on par with that. It's also like he's trying to convince himself and the listener that these should be huge and received as such. Whether or not the trilogy is instant classic worldwide phenomenon material like Dookie and AI is still up for discussion (but obviously the world isn't having it), but it's clear that the band thinks deeply about its success when making music. If you look at their personalities and attitudes with their declining popularity in those "middle years" around Nimrod and Warning, they had a very unhappy "we suck" attitude about themselves as a band, a chip on their shoulders, etc. They got that off their back with AI, and for a while have been riding the "We have nothing left to prove" horse. And while that's definitely true, I honestly believe they would all be depressed if they were slowly relegated to that washed up but still putting out records old band status. Like, fuck, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen... those guys still put out new music, and they're fucking legends, but none of it really cracks through, and for all I know they've been making better music in the last 10 years than they did when they were superstars. But is there really a precedent or an example of honest-to-God CONTINUED relevance? U2 had their big hits again back in 2005 too, after a much longer career, but who's to say they ever will have a real hit album again? I don't think there are very many examples of bands staying incredibly relevant for more than 20 years and the fact that Green Day has managed it for a time is fantastic, I hope they *can* break the mold and put out hits until they're old and gray, but there's really no precedent for it (If there is though, someone please tell me an example!). That doesn't mean the music quality is better or worse, it's just the way it is.

You clearly haven't been reading the press on Bob Dylan's current album. They're claiming it's his return.. and having listened to it and bought the mp3,cd,and vinyl version of it I'd say it is.

Just because they're not in the ~mainstream~ it doesn't mean that they aren't popular. Think about the hundreds of indie bands that are never in the charts yet they still have a devoted fan base, doesn't mean they aren't popular.

Music has changed alot since AI was out, rock has fallen out favour with the masses and people are buying mass produced crap. Yet bands like Bon Jovi, The Rolling Stones, hell even Rush [and they're a unknown band unless you're into prog] still sell out concerts and sell albums.

If you ask someone 'have you heard of green day?' 9 times out of 10 that answer will be yes. They're not some obscure band that only hipsters like.

tl;dr yes they are still popular

I think it's not about losing popularity. I was a fan of pop music. there are many pop and country and R&B singers out there that I enjoy. I even like Inna (Romanian singer) but at the same time I enjoy Green Day very much. I got introduced to this band at the time when I hated rock music but when I listened to them I was immediately like ''they sound different'' . any good music will recieve well enough.

Just take a look at AI. That record is flawless. who can deny this? I still believe AI is much better thatn 21cb as a whole.

about The Forgotten I think it received well. If you check MTV's website it is in top 5 ost viewed videos

and about Stray Heart. Even we fans don't know about it's single, let alone other people. How many of you have watched it's video on TV? the video was never mentioned on MTV , nor Vh1 or other music channels.

This band has a good look. I just believe Green Day should have a fresher sound. I really enjoyed Dos but to me still AI is No1.

And they should definately change their LABEL and MANAGER.

I've only listened to it once, but it seems to be his weakest album (excluding the Christmas one) since before Time Out of Mind.

This trilogy is counted by the label as one album, so we can't really know anything about sales figures untill all three have been out for a while. That said, these albums are not going to be smash hits not least because the promotion for them has been limited by Billie-Joe going into rehab and the subsequent forced changes to the schedule.

As for you all saying music sales are down and illegal downloading is running rampant.... it's not very true. PHYSICAL Record sales are actually up this year. In fact, VINYL has even seen a resurge in popularity. Illegal downloading is also going down.... this was a huge discussion in my music biz intro class back in May.

It's counted as 1 album contract wise but for sales they will count seperately

I think they dont deserve all that popularity come with American Idiot. To date, this is their average "electoral constituency" and it might be too much. Let's be serious, I love them, but I'm aware they aren't a band as great as they've become.

if you dont think theyre a great band then why are you here... a just question

Although I don't like Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd for instance, I think about them when I read "great band". Not Green Day. So, I mean, it's a natural process that Green Day are losing popularity because the one they gained with American Idiot, was ephemeral.

To remind you that this group exists for 25 years and has sold over 65 million albums. They have fill all the stages of the world.Plus Green day have won many many many many awards.

You're not worthy to question the value of this band.Green Day is a great band, whether you like it or not.

You're right, I haven't been reading the press on what is it, Tempest? But you'd be hard-pressed to say a "return" for Bob Dylan will truly and honestly mean we will be inundated with his voice and image on radio, TV, charts, that kids will go wild for his message. It would be glorious, but it ain't gonna happen. And popularity means finding new and in-your-face media attention, something I don't think will happen for Dylan even if those in-the-know and older fans revere this as his greatest work since 1963.

Some might argue that's better than the vague media and critical popularity that Green Day currently hold. I wouldn't mind if they lost their ability to attract new audiences but their work was superb and worthy, but I think at this point in their careers they're still holding onto the fact that they can attract new audiences. I don't know if they can or will, I sure hope so, but they're not done caring about that yet. It does have to do with age, and this is a midlife crisis for the band as much as it is for Billie Joe. Part of their huge success with American Idiot, let's face facts, was that Billie Joe was "hot." Well guess what, he's not gonna be considered hot to most 14 year old girls anymore, at least not when 1D and the likes are inundating the market. Without that going for them (and something they can only lose, btw), they're gonna have to pull out another trick.

Honestly, how many artists in top 40 are over the age of 35? This is less a question of music and more a question of age. Youth sells, and they're losing it.

Yes, Green day is losing popularity. Sadly :S

I'm sure these latest albums won't be popular with some of the plastic fans Green Day have earned the last few years, but at the same time Uno/ Dos / Tre might be winning back a fair few older fans who thought they'd never hear the more classic Green Day sound again. They may not be getting the media hype anymore but thats a good thing i think as over exposure can ruin bands/music!

I don't really think it's Green Day losing popularity, just rock music in general in pop culture is becoming irrelevant. Green Day is one of the most main stream rock bands in the world but I mean look at popular music when American Idiot came out back in 2004 to now in 2012. Back in 2004 alternative, pop-punk, etc was very popular as well as pop star dance music. Now it's all Dance music, electronic, dubstep, etc. When was the last time a great new rock band exploded with popularity? Even when 21CB came out rock music in general was some what dieing in pop culture.

Green Day will always have their hardcore audience, but they may not be as relevant in pop culture anymore, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I mean look back at the iHeart Radio festival. When Green Day was playing the crowd was fucking dead. They went crazy for pop stars with no musical talent other than being able to sing decently with auto-tune and dance okay, but when an actually band was up there who have been kicking ass for over 20 years, dead. If you saw the whole show you can tell Billie Joe was pissed off the entire time. He stopped in the middle of the first song as well to tell everyone to get the fuck up and when they started playing music again his mic was cut off for a few seconds. That show was mostly disappointing because Billie Joe is seeking treatment right now, but also disappointing because it showed what peoples' taste in music has been limited to.

Anyways, I fucking love Green Day, and I hope they keep making music til they die, I just hope the decline in their relevancy in pop culture doesn't demotivate them from making beautiful music, they are the greatest band in the fucking world. Fact

They may not be popular among the MTV Generation with all the pop/electronic/hip hop music being played there but I think the fact that Green Day just played 20.000 capacity venues even BEFORE the triology came out is evidence enough that they are still very popular among their fanbase and/or rock fans. I doubt they really care how many records they sell as long as they are still able to play in front of a crowd that are willing to pay money to see them live! That's how bands survive anyway, isn't it?

The term "popularity" is very ambiguous.

If we are referring to the fact that they aren't played on the radio much anymore, then yeah, I guess you can say that they have lost popularity. However, if you look at these Green Day forums, they have some of the most dedicated and loyal fans I have ever seen. So, it that sense, I think they are still very popular and relevant. And it's not just that like a handful of people still like Green Day; I am sure thousands upon thousands still LOVE Green Day despite the fact they aren't so "mainstream" (I absolutely hate that word, but can't think of any other) anymore.

Psh, I love Green Day, and I don't care if they aren't as "popular" anymore. As long as they keep on making music, I shall be one happy person

There's no doubt in my mind that after all of this, they'll be seen as one of the greatest bands in rock n' roll history. They might be declining in mainstream popularity now, but that's normal. We thought this was happening after Warning, but Green Day managed to pull off a cultural phenomenon twice. Pretty fucking incredible. Green Day's not a band that can just fade away now, they've permanently etched their name on to rock n' roll history. They'll probably always be able to play amphitheaters and smaller arenas for the rest of their lives, because they've put in their time and proved to everyone twice now that they're the real deal. So yeah, their time in the sun with the mainstream may be over, but most bands their age lost popularity and relevancy long before Green Day, so I think this lull in popularity isn't something we have to worry about at all.

They are definitely a band as great as they've become. They brought punk back to the mainstream in the 90's, and they lead the forefront for political music in the 2000's. Green Day basically perfected the catchy pop-punk song style and inspired SO many artists. I'm sure that in 30 years, people will look back at Green Day see them in the same way as we see Metallica or Pink Floyd.

at first i was wondering about their popularity too but when i saw the reaction they caused at Reading this year that quickly shut me up, i mean people were running to that tent at around 11am - which is quite early for people who would be mostly hungover to be running to the very back of a festival and not to mention a killer! So to see a band who have been around for 25yrs cause that reaction at a festival is quite impressive for me & made me realize how much people out there still like Green Day :) there was so many people that organizers had to close part of the tent off - with the majority of the people remaining outside to watch on the big screens - again pretty impressive for a band who have been around for such a long time.

The same goes for the reactions they cause at their surprise shows like the one in London was talked about on the radio the day after, they always leave their mark anywhere they go :) so i think they're still popular and relevant as ever and they've maintained that for most of their career(yea it took a dip during the Warning era but they recovered from that). i don't think acts like one direction/bieber will be able to hold their popularity when they hit 30 & i doubt they'll be able to recover as well as Green Day did when/if their popularity takes a dip.

1D/bieber are only popular for their looks(they look like dogs to me imo) Green Day are popular for their songs. that's how i personally see it.

Nah, Green Day is still popular. I don't think there are a lot of people who would say "Who is Green Day?". A lot of people, who don't really give a shit about GD, could probably name a couple of songs too. They are still a big band, who may not get the #1 record for either U/D/T, but they are still relevant I believe.

None of my friends give a shit about them, don't necessarily hate them or anything, but don't really care. Though even my friend who actually hates them has been caught singing basket case before.

I think this all has to do with not being able to see them live right now and see the crowd go crazy like we are used to seeing

Are they losing popularity? Who gives a shit. We all love them. They make music for us and they make music for themselves. They don't try to change their sound to pigeonhole themselves into a category or to get themselves played on the local Mix Hits radio station. They have sustenance. Their old stuff can be played on modern/alt rock stations just as much as their new stuff.

What's "popular" these days last 2 or 3 songs. Carly Rae Jepsen became a one hit wonder months before her album that featured "Call Me Maybe" even came out!!!! You think LMFAO will be around 20 years from now?? Music today is shit. Thanks to being able to buy one song at a time, hardly any bands put forth the effort to actually put together an entire album that people can listen to from beginning to end.

And in all actuality, I hope they lose somewhat of their popularity because more of the hardcore fans will go to the concerts instead of the knuckleheads who go to the show, get drunk, become drunk assholes, and hope the band will play "Basketcase".

I'll always be a fan. You'll always be a fan. That's what's great about Green Day. That's what's great about Green Day fans.

Carly Rae Jepsen's last hit was her sex tape and that was months ago. (excuse this, I make very terrible jokes.)

LMFAO disbanded.

The mainstream stuff turned to shit. Music hasn't, the spotlight is just directed towards the talentless and the good shit is like a needle in a haystack you gotta fucking dig for it and not click a featured link.

I have no idea what is popular in music and I don't care.

Oh, and concerning Green Day's popularity... I'm sure the band doesn't really care. Neither do I. Cause it only matters to me that I can listen to their music.

LOL they already broken up!!! just wanted to share that information

who cares about hit singles. Concerts is where the money lies and gd tickets still sell like hot cakes. Most pop artists cant even sell out arenas even lady gaga had to give out free tickets and give groupon deals when she was touring south america. lol rihanna (rihfund) sold tickets for 10 dollars so dont worry you guys green day will be just fine.
