bringonjennifury Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I find that DOS does not have quite the fun of UNO, but it has a lot more intellectual depth.
spark in the night Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 how is Uno more fun? And how are Fuck Time, Makeout Party, Lady Cobra, and Nightlife intellectual?
Malleus Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I find that DOS does not have quite the fun of UNO, but it has a lot more intellectual depth. Are you sure you haven't mixed up the titles?
Clockwise Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Well I typed green day in on Google, and I have yet to read a truly negative one. I'm not saying everyone likes it, but I believe the majority prefer Dos over Uno, because almost in every review, people are saying it's a step up from the first in the trilogy, I've seen a lot of reviews that say DOS is a step up, yeah. I think it's been received a bit better than UNO so far.
DookieLukie Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I think Warner is treating the Trilogy like one album. I believe that they said before that it's considered to be one album in Green Day's contract. With that in mind, all is well for the trilogy in terms of sales. Promotion may have given UNO and DOS better sales, but not by much. People who say one "mega album' would have sold better, well it wuld have sold the same as UNO probably, and at most it would have equaled the whole trilogy's total. No loss there. However, Warner needs to start promoting singles better. Stray Heart for example is an excellent song that I'm sure could do well, but it's never played on the radio. I hope this gets sorted out. I'm looking forward to Tre as the best of the trilogy. I think most people will like it if it resembles AI at all. Can't wait to see Green Day get back into the swing of things, too.
stories and songs Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 It really surprises me to see people saying it feels passionless, because us as hardcore fans know how excited and passionate the band is about the new music. So I think saying that there's no passion, or that there phoning it in, is wrong to me. I don't care if people dislike it, but I wouldn't call it lazy or passionless. I'm somebody that loves the hell out of all of it, and yeah, if they put the best 12 of these songs onto one album, I think it probably would have been one of the best of their careers. With that said, I think both DOS and UNO stand up extremely well in their discography. To be honest, I haven't really bought this new, wild, sexed up version of Green Day from the get go. It all feels a bit forced to me - the lyrics (with of course some exceptions - the lyrics of Amy and Lazy Bones are great, for example) don't have the personal, honest quality that I'm used to with Green Day's music. In interviews, I never quite saw the excitement from the guys that people reference - in fact, it seemed like they had very little to say about the new music other than it is about "sexual tension" and the like. Which is obviously only my observation/opinion - the guys are surely very excited about the new music. But has never felt quite right to me. Because in my opinion, this simply isn't what Green Day is all about. I always really liked that Green Day wasn't like other rock bands who sang about hot chicks and partying. And while I totally love that they still want to push themselves and experiment, thus far the music as a whole has felt very... unremarkable. It is good music, but they can do way better than good. They are so much better than merely good. There are some utterly AMAZING songs in the mix that I'm completely in love with. That said, I'm generally just not feeling the theme of the albums. The issue I'm having with Dos! is that I've found a select few tracks that I really like the first go around, and I keep replaying them over and over with no desire to listen to the others. Which isn't normal for me. With Uno!, I listened to the entire thing on a loop like, twice a day because of how short it is. This one I'm constantly skipping around. I'm sorry - I'm annoying myself with how critical I'm being. Just one of those nights, lol. Even though it doesn't sound like it, I do like Uno! and Dos!. I'm just not as overwhelmingly happy with them as I'd like to be, I guess. I am incredibly excited about Tre!, though. I really think that one is gonna knock it out of the park.

Guest Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I like Green Day. And I like their music. That is my input in this conversation. Thank you and goodnight ! (Jk I'll be up all night... Stupid Bio class)
Homero Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 A shitty fact - The uncensored version is still not available in Argentina, you can only get the clean one so far... I came here to say this
PunkRocker89 Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I definitely enjoy Dos! more than Uno! Just because I thought the songs were more as a whole, "In-your-face" and more fun. I agreed with one of you when you said you didn't like the direction they were going like with songs just about sex, drugs, and alcohol. I completely agree. Like i don't have a problem with "Fuck Time" because it is a hilarious AWESOME song (one of my favorite in fact). but this is just so much centered around that and i don't want people to think that's all this band's about. Even though we all know they aren't. My favorite tracks are probably Ashley, Baby Eyes, Fuck Time, Amy, Stray Heart And i actually really like Nightlife! It's so different, it really gives a Clash "Combat Rock" feel. However, when you say Lady Cobra's going to "rap" mean rap and not just talk in rhythm with the song. She really isn't a good rapper at all. (Though I know no one really cares about the quality of her rapping because most Green Day fans could care less about rap just needed to get that off my chest!)
Femme Gauche Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Whereas Uno was love at first listen, it's going to take awhile for Dos to grow on me. It's like a new GD/Foxies/Network cd all rolled up in one. First I listened to it all the way through, and then instead of playing it again, I kept repeatedly going back to a few songs. Lazybones sounds like it could be a B-side from Warning. I can also picture it being in the AI musical. Fuck Time is hilarious and I can't stop listening to it. Amy is gorgeous and makes me want to cry. I love the lines: 'May I have this last dance, By chance if we should meet?, Can you write me a lullaby?, So we can sing you to sleep'. Ugh...it kills me. And I'm going to be the odd-girl out, but I absolutely love Nightlife! It's so different and I love Lady Cobra's voice. It seems very Network-y to me. I've grown to really love Nightlife too. But Dos for me was love at first listen absolutely, whereas I had to warm up to Uno. I mean, for me this compares with my first "new Green Day record" experience where I was already a fan, with 21CB. I loved it, and could not listen to anything else for a couple of months. That was not the case with Uno, I mean I have listened to it about 40 times since I first got it, but I've already listened to Dos 13, so... I don't know, it just gets under my skin, but in a good way. I definitely enjoy Dos! more than Uno! Just because I thought the songs were more as a whole, "In-your-face" and more fun. I agreed with one of you when you said you didn't like the direction they were going like with songs just about sex, drugs, and alcohol. I completely agree. Well from what Billie said she is in a punk band, so that's the perspective she is coming from. I looked up her song "Text Messaging Slut" after Billie mentioned it, and it is along the same sort of vein, too. Umm, Lady Cobra IS an actual person. In fact, you here her voice on the next track. Lead vocal of Mystic Knights of the Cobra. Femme Gauche wasn't saying Lady Cobra's literally not a real person. Obviously she is - that's how she sings on the track! They were saying that Lady Cobra *in the song* doesn't seem to be characterized as an actual person per se, but more as a concept or representation of the overall grimy nightlife. So Lady Cobra's part in Nightlife comes from the character of that shoulder devil or whatever, not from the character of a girl really named Lady Cobra. I think that's a good interpretation. But of course, you can also see the girl in Nightlife as indeed being an actual girl saying all that. Both interpretations work. That is exactly what I meant, thank you. LOL I know she is a real person, she has writing credits in the fine print of Dos and of course, her photo appears - twice! - in the booklet.

I have to agree with the bolded part. While it's possible that Uno could have sold much more if it was the only album and proper dedication was given to the singles and the band was able to promote it after iHeart, at the end of the trilogy they will have sold a million copies in a short amount of time, and it makes no difference to Warner if that merchandise had "Oh Love" or "99 Revolutions" on it in three different albums, to them, they were manufacturing a shitload of Green Day CDs and selling them. They don't care that there happen to be different songs on each of these CDs, it's all the same to them. This is one album to them and in that respect, I don't think they will see this as a failure. Honestly, did anyone expect to have THREE American Idiot-selling blasts in one go? Impossible, and hardly expected for one album, let alone three. That being said, this promotion obviously could have been handled better, and I'm frankly surprised Dos is managing along as well as it is (average) considering it doesn't exist in the minds of anyone besides those already in the deep. I also still hold out hope that Tre can, will, and should be the best received and most popular of the three. But I'm not holding my breath.

It seems like everyone is putting their eggs into one basket and I just don't want people to be disappointed if it isn't everything that everyone has hyped it up to be. I'm not saying it's going to be bad or anything..psh, I know I will love it. But I feel like Tre is suppose to be the "redeeming" part of this whole trilogy...well a trilogy isn't a trilogy without the first two parts I am thoroughly enjoying Dos...a lot more than Uno surprisingly
Heather. Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Nope. Still not buying. Suit yourself. Takes a lot of cognitive dissonance on your part to ignore the evidence, but whatever
Clockwise Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 To be honest, I haven't really bought this new, wild, sexed up version of Green Day from the get go. It's totally okay to express your opinion on this, whatever it may be. I think the themes have been alienating a lot of fans. I think the sexual tension and other themes of the songs are maybe even a little bit too honest for a lot of people. Billie is obviously going through a unique period of his life, some people would even call it a midlife crisis, and this is how he feels. I think the descriptions of the music is very similar to interviews in the 90's when they were asked about their non-concept albums- the songs are just about life, and where they're at in that period of their lives. This is where they're at now, and I can understand how it could alienate some fans. I relate to the majority of these new songs, though, and I'm glad they're at least being honest with themselves and what kind of music they put out.
The Snark Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I still can't get over how Lady Cobra's part is being called rap. Now if they had used Three Six Mafia....*shrug* Fuck...now I'm imagining that.

JAS0N Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I mentioned this before but ill say it again - a lot of fans on this forum seem to be delusional in regards to the type of band Green Day is historically. Uno fits exactly with the history of the band, what longtime fans grew up with. Dos for the most part sounds like the b-sides that would be released with singles on earlier albums to be honest. If your jacked for Tre in anticipation of another concept album that's great (they already tried and failed for the most part at that with 21st) but here's hoping they stop trying to be "the biggest band in the world" and go back to their roots like they did with Uno.

I don't disagree that it is (a part of) the band they've always been, but I strongly disagree about 21CB being a failure.
JAS0N Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I don't disagree that it is (a part of) the band they've always been, but I strongly disagree about 21CB being a failure. I wasn't saying 21st was a failure as a whole to me, more of a disappointment that they tried in my opinion to create another concept album to recreate the success of AI. Up to that point GD were never that band that made albums specifically to be a mainstream hit, they did the opposite in fact after Dookie with Insomniac, but they sorta went into the corporate rock band mode with 21st.
Femme Gauche Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I still disagree. I think they did 21CB because that is what they weren't expected to do, and because it was the sort of record they wanted to make. A lot of growth for the band came through with that record, and I really don't think that that would have happened had they not made it. They could have fallen by the wayside after AI, but instead they came out the better for it. These records are in answer to the previous two, even though they seem completely unrelated.
The Snark Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 What would you call it then.. Well to me, rap is aggressive in nature, and this is a bit more sing-songy. The sound of it makes me think of some of Gwen Stefani's solo work.
Cob Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I find that DOS does not have quite the fun of UNO, but it has a lot more intellectual depth. I agree with you. The only songs on here that are really "throw away fun" are Fuck Time, Makeout Party, and maybe Stop When The Red Lights Flash. Everything else is a metaphor. Everyone's getting fooled by the party exterior I see.
perfectpitchrob Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Is there anyone else who pre-ordered the digital box set and hasn't received their emailed copy yet? Warner needs to get their act together! :angry edit- emailed them last night about it, and they emailed me not only dos but also fresh download links of Uno and the previous 4 singles!
