Stop When The Red Lights Flash - Studio Version

Anyways, I don't have a problem with people disliking the song. I'm just puzzled that there is no way in pleasing people with simple music anymore these days.

We're on a fan forum for a band whose back catalogue is predominantly 3 chord pop-punk, which is about as simple as it gets. That suggests everyone on here's alright with simple music, unless they have no idea how straightforward Green Day's material is musically.

This song even if released back in Green Day's older days would still be said to be filler. Take the melody of the song for instance. Its catchy, but compare it some of the melodies from past songs, such as Walking Alone, Stuart and the Avenue, Pulling Teeth etc., it isn't as memorable. It just sounds passable, like a lot of these songs do. Like there was really no quality control, they just threw whatever song they could on the albums and just said "Oh, we thought ALL of these songs were good." to justifiy it. Why do you think we haven't had a single b-side with any of the singles? They say that they're their hardest critics, but it doesn't seem like that to me, especially with Mike and Tre saying things like "These songs are going to blow their minds!" "This is fucking genius!". Be honest, have any of these songs reached "genius" levels? Or have you had your "mind blown"? And this is all my opinion, so I don't want to hear any "Aw you're a troll!", "You're a hater!" comments just because I'm saying what's on my mind. If you don't agree with it then ok. If you have a problem with it:

Actually, I consider the melody very memorable. It's fairly simple, but not so much so that it's forgettable or uninteresting. I really like it a lot, and it conveys the mood of the song well in my opinion.

The reason we've heard no b-sides? Here are two obvious ones: 1) They're releasing so many songs as it is that we're getting plenty of new material already. Really, 37 songs is significantly more than usual. But, since they had over 80, we could still very well get some more out of them - bonus songs, etc. 2) In case you haven't noticed, b-sides are becoming less and less common every year. CD singles are becoming rarer all the time, and likewise, so are b-sides. Not a lot of artists release b-sides anymore, which is really unfortunate - those are often among my favorite songs.

And to address your last bolded statement: Yes, actually, I have been mindblown by some of their new music and consider some of it "genius." I was very impressed with Oh Love and Kill The DJ from Uno (among others), I'm impressed by Nightlife, Wild One, Amy, and some others from Dos, and from what I've heard of Tré - which will be their most musically complex album of the three - I'd say The Forgotten is incredible, and Brutal Love and Dirty Rotten Bastards promise to be epic as well.

You often sound very condescending, and like people are stupid for not seeing all the "flaws" you find in pretty much every new Green Day song we've heard.

I just like that the song is simple. And it's definitely more a party sound than Uno!

Idk bout anyone else and I dont really care but for me every new song they've put out is really rad and im not saying that as like someone who loves everything Green Days does im very judgmental but for me this trilogy is really hitting the spot for me I believe its been a hugely creative time for the band and im enjoying every second of it.

Me and you both! I'm not bothered if other people like the new stuff or wanna pick at everything (although it can get a bit tiresome), as far as I'm concerned it couldn't be better. If I was up to me what Green Day did these new albums would be it, it's my Green Day fantasy come true . This is yet another fabulous new song and I love it, bit surprised so many people don't feel the same but as long as I'm enjoying it it doesn't really matter.

I have a feeling I'm gonna like this song a lot.

I don't think people are stupid for seeing the flaws, because I never claim my opinion is right. Ever. Never ever never ever never ever never ever forever never.

And I've never claimed anyone's opinion is wrong, and I don't call people stupid.

If you notice people are probably insult me more than insult, or blow things out of proportions or make take what I say out of context. Its funny, because I'm sure, for some weird reason, it would be more accepted if I posted "This song is shit" over and over again other than what I do now. If anything people are more condescending towards me.

First point is an opinion, second is also an opinion. Also how is Nightlife generic pop music. Let me guess, because it has Rap in it? Although I have no idea how Rap = generic Pop music. Or is it because it has effects in in? In my opinion, a good artist uses all tools availabe to them, including the studio, which is a musical extension in its own right.

Nightlife is basically taking typical misogynistic mainstream hip hop lyrics and putting them in the mouth of a woman who whispers them seductively, ie ninety percent of pop songs. I give them credit for at least playing their own instruments on the track but if there were ever a song they made just to capitalize on a trend in music, this would be it. It might sound different for Green Day, but I wouldn't even really classify it as experimental because everything about it is so calculated. I haven't read all of your posts, but I've read enough to notice that you seem to enjoy modern hip hop and rap music quite a bit, which I have no problem with. However, I do recognize that style of music is trendy right now. The studio is technically a musical extension, but in my mind only to a point. From what I've heard, I don't really mind the studio effects in Nightlife but I do become annoyed when music is weighed down by added studio effects. As long as you can retain the original quality though, I say effect away.

And I never even said this song was bad.

I enjoy it, I've enjoyed most of the new songs, but not much more than enjoy.

I guess I just enjoyed Green Day more back when I was green.

It's clearly filler. Also considering Nightlife is the oddest, most unusual track we've heard so far, what a completely bizarre statement about generic pop music.

Well we could debate all day about what filler is but suffice to say this is not what filler sounds like. Also Nightlife is only odd for Green Day, it's rather trendy in the grand scheme of things so it's really not at all bizarre to call it generic pop music. It's fine to make that if you want to, but don't pretend as if you're venturing into uncharted waters with it.

I wouldn't say typical because they're a little more humorous than some of mainstream rap, and you don't really hear female rappers anymore. Also, a little known fact about hip hop that some people don't know. Hip Hop isn't a music genre it's a phenomenon, while rap is a genre of music.

Well, Green Day haven't really ever come close to venturing into uncharted waters, so we shouldn't really expect that.

I think the reason you seem to rub people the wrong way is your tone and perceived implications. You sound like you're condescending - even if that's not your intent, that's how I interpret it a lot. Communication goes two ways, and us over here on the receiving end of your messages are understanding them as offensive. It may be good to consider that more when posting future comments, and to try to assuage any ambiguity so that people are less likely to take offense.

Also, while you claim that you don't actually think the song is bad, it comes off that way. Perhaps if you focused *less* on the negative, and gave the positivity a more fair representation, people wouldn't peg you as such a negative, contrary troll. Try to be more balanced at least - say what you dislike *and* what you do like, and not solely the former. That's my unsolicited advice to you. But I do think it would lessen the negative feelings a lot of people seem to have for you and your posts.

Ok well I agree they've never been captain beef heart or anything like that but the op made it seem like they'd invented a new genre with nightlife. Also I'll yield to your knowledge on hip hop phenomena. We're probably not that far off on opinion on this song actually since you recently said you didn't think it was bad. I don't mind the production and I just enjoy the song also. I'll definitely listen to it while driving which is usually what I do with green day music so it satisfies me.

I said I enjoyed the song and gave my reason for so in a previous post.

Its catchy, there isn't really much more to it than that. Its probably the main reason why everyone else likes it. Shocking? Yes, I know. And there are far more annoying tones than mine. More slavish flavored ones. I actually have a sense of humor as well, which is ironic that people don't notice it because this is a Green Day forum, but maybe people are just too quick to jump to conclusions without backing it up some. The quickest to judge, yet the easiest to offend. One to manipulate but not keep its own shape. Does anyone have a clue what I'm talking about at this point? A dick can't be an asshole. That's the message I'm trying to get across. 9/11, Bring the troops home. Thank you, now can the person with the light blue chevy report to the parking lot please?

I really enjoyed Stop When The Red Lights Flash as much as I like all the songs of Foxboro Hot Tubs. ;)

I like it. Straight-up, good-old-fashioned, rock and roll. Sounds like Dos is going to be one hell of a ride

If you like the song, good for you. If you don't like the song, good for you. End of story.

Personally, I think it's a fantastic little musical number. A little short, but gets the job done! Catchy, fun, powerful.

we all have our opinions. I don't like it either. it's not the baddest from the trilogy, but it really annoyed me, got the "i'll make you surrender" part stuck in my head all day

I think "baddest" means kickass bad. But wait until u listen "fuck time".
