Spasticity just means something that has gone into spasm, usually a muscle. You can also have spastic colon which is a spasm in the colon and is very painful. You don't really get spastic nerves, but that's the joke really, that if your nerves have gone into spasm then maybe you're jumpy and twitchy. In the 70s in UK "spastic" was used a lot as an offensive word against people who had cerebral palsy and therefore became completely politically incorrect (see Life on Mars the UK version). If this term was not used in the US then there is no way Billie Joe would know about it and I doubt very much he would want to cause offense.

PS Sufferers of Cerebral Palsy were actually called spastics legitimately years ago (just in the UK again?, I don't know), and there was a charity called the Spastics Society, so I don't when or why it was changed. Presumably because it's harder use "Cerebral Palsy" as an offensive term.

I missed the whole rude comments on Tre's pictures thing. What exactly happened? Were people just saying things like "nice boobs" and stuff? Why is that even considered offensive? She's wearing a very low cut top. She's obviously proud of her body and wants to show it off. What's wrong with getting compliments about it?

I heard a few people say that we're supposed to be super respectful and stuff, but come on, what about Tre?! He says disrespectful stuff all the time, and we always laugh about it (well, I mean, most people do, but I sometimes get offended or annoyed by it).

However, if people were calling her a slut and stuff... well, that's not fair. While what she's wearing shows that she's proud of her body, it doesn't mean she's a slut. or if they were threatening her or something. It the simple fact thet fans feel they are free to do so and say anything they want about Tres and his other half while even if someone said even "Billie and Norah look cute together" -- which I did - and guess what happens - you get a traid of attacks etc etc. Time for a rule change.

Hopefully in future that fans acknowledge that they cannot and should expect consquences for attacking Tre and Sara and that she should get the same level of respect. Yeah you've made this point several times, but the thing is it doesn't really have anything to do with Billie and Adrienne so there isn't really any need to mention them. Unfortunately we live in a sexist society where it's seen to be more acceptable to make disrespectful comments about women who look or dress a certain way, I'm pretty sure that's the reason Sara is more likely to be a target than Adrienne, rather than because of which band member they're with or anything to do with their personalities. Basically disrespecting anyone you don't know for no good reason isn't OK, I think we both agree on that. And I think it's clear to see that most fans (especially here on GDC) agree with that as well whichever wife or girlfriend we're talking about, so there isn't much need to compare.

Argh, that's just silliness. It should be the intent that matters with words and it's clear Billie doesn't have any intent to offend, I doubt he even knows the meaning it has and how people feel about it here.

Come to think of it I remember it being on the news when Tiger Woods called himself a "spaz" once. It definitely still offends people here so Americans that aren't aware of that are at risk of causing offense to UK people I suppose. I think younger people are getting to think of it as less offensive and more just an American slang term though, it's a long time since people with cerebral palsy were called spastics and you hear Americans say spaz on TV and stuff a lot, I didn't think of it the offensive way either just because I'm so used to that.

I agree 100% Lauren (if it was the case that all they were saying was "nice boobs", which apparently it wasn't, people were actually being derogatory.) But I REALLY echo your point about Tre saying disrespectful stuff all the time himself, and a history of saying even sexist things at times, or just being a guy, who himself I'm sure is impressed by her "nice boobs". Obviously people took it too far in saying he's only with her for the boobs, or whatever shit, but I'm sure whatever people have said is no more offensive than things Tre has said in his past.

I'm glad he didn't get all stuck up about it and forgave the fans though. You have to have a thick skin when you're a celebrity and just brush this kind of shit off. Clearly Billie does a good job of it, or at least has chosen to mostly ignore comments to protect himself, because in the past he used to angrily respond.
