Clearly this song is about Tré. It was even supposed to be on TRÉ the album. Billie was being a bit clever with the title. Let me fix it "sTré Heart"

Ok. I really enjoyed Stray Heart, probably more than any other song on iUno!, and what's also good about it is that its a midway track, so it'll hopefully help make it so the middle of the album doesn't drag or seem weaker compared to the beginning and the end of the album. The only thing that can ruin the flow of this album is if Ashley or Baby Eyes are weak tracks

Much better :D

I think to assume that he's writing the song from his point of view would be silly. A quote I like, and I'm not sure where it's from, says something like "the worst thing you can do as a reader is to assume when the writer says 'I,' they mean themselves."

I've always interpreted the song as being about cheating, but I don't want to assume it's from Billie's point of view as the cheater.

This song has so many layers it's insane, though!

Well said!

I'm amused by the way it goes "juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust" at the end. There's this silly old joke song by Mase and Puff Daddy called Jealous Guy where they go "just let it beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-" then stop and take a deep breath and carry on "-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee", and when my sister and I first listened to that bit of Stray Heart we both immediately thought of that and were half expecting Billie to do the same thing

Billie's songs have always een the way that everyone can have they're own interpretation from them. so I think this song would have a lot of different meanings for us. even for Billie Joe

I keep understanding "I lost my whale baby, this stray heart..."

It's weird, this song being about cheating never even crossed my mind. "This stray heart went to another, can you recover baby?" really sounds like it could be about doin' the dirty with somebody else, but I honestly don't think it is. Billie seems to have gotten into a mindset where he's writing songs about Adie that he'd write way back when, besides, he just doesn't seem like a cheater. I know we don't know that at all and all that crap but I just FEEL it in my bones. It could very well be about drugs/alcohol though, but (imo) it probably isn't.

Very interesting stuff to think about.

We can never know who it is about, until they say something.

It could be about whoever.. Tré, Billie, Mike, or anyone else.

I don't want it to be about Billie... or anyone of them

Is there any word on if or when Stray Heart will be released as a real radio single??

I'm dumb. I read 'my heart went to another' and then telling the girl she loves her and I didn't even think of cheating.

I hope that they release Stray Heart as a single soon! I know it's only been a couple of days but I wish that they dealt with this song like they did with Oh Love, told us about it several days in advance and release it as a single on the actual day we first can hear it. It deserves to be a massive hit!

*snort*

I dunno, I mean, the song itself sounds like cheating, but that doesn't always mean there is actual cheating going on even if it is first person for real, but even then, he might not always be writing about himself, so. Anyway it's a really great song. From a time before any of them were born XD.

I think to assume this song is about his own personal life is kind of icky :/ I know it's hard not to, but it isn't just Billie's personal life, but Adrienne's too, and that's what makes it icky for me. Specially since the song could be about absolutely anyone, anything, or nothing. Not every song has to make sense or be based on true events, or at least personal events. He's already said not all these songs are personal. And yet it could be totally true. Who knows? We'll never know so it's pointless trying to figure it out either way really.

Just try and enjoy the songs for what they are without thinking too much of a possible reason for them. That's one down side to being so privy to singers and bands personal lives these days (and it's all on their terms, at least with these guys) it's hard not to separate fact from fiction, or not to think of their families when songs like these come up, and that leads to speculation. But the best thing is to separate the two entirely.

Very true. And you can still study and interpret the meaning of the lyrics without trying to relate them to real life. Whether they're fact or fiction or something in between doesn't really matter, it's the meaning and beauty of the words that's interesting.

Ok, is not right to asume right away this song (or others) is about him. But anyway, I never thought about it like a way too personal and even dark song Billie Joe wrote about himself.

To me is about an impossible love :)

Let me quote Billie Joe himself from this interview. (Different subject, but I think the quote applies)

Just because you sing songs about a certain feeling doesn’t mean you have to go feeling that way forever. You can sing about that for the rest of your life, but that doesn’t mean things aren’t going to change in your own life.

So.... Will Stray Heart be a single, or did we just get the IC song?

We got the artwork so it must be a single

Stray Heart is coming out on Oct 23, the same day as The Forgotten

You sure? 09/23/2012 means September, not October..... still so much confusion about this single. :/

Yeah, this just adds to WMG's incompetence

Haha, exactly! They can't even get the date right. Silly Green Day Customer Service people.

But I do hope Green Day (or their website) officially announce if Stray Heart is indeed a real single, when it's being released, when we'll see the video, etc. We need to know!

Plus, how would that work with The Forgotten being a single too (starting Oct 23rd too - also really weird.........) - that might get messy.

gonna wait for the 23th Oct..i want the last single download for my ultimate bundle then (stray heart+the forgotten would be awesome though :D )

But the Forgotten is a single or a premiere? And I wonder why they release a ¡Tré! single now... Well, it makes me 99% sure they'll release Amy as a single. They seem to be releasing all the closings.

Does anybody else feel like this needs a bit of backing vocals? I think that the chorus would be even more "goosebump-giving" with additional voices.

Actually, no.

I personally think that songs that sound powerful without the use of a lot of back up vocals are one of the strongest songs you may find in the music world. Vocals that can carry an entire song on their own without adding too much additional vocals are very rare to find these days I think.

Don't get me wrong, I truly love the Green Day vocal harmonies and I live Mike's backing vocals. But mainly when they actually do add that extra value to a song, which they seem to do in about any if their songs.

Stray Heart is such a powerful song because it shows the best of each if the members while bringing it together and make it work so damn well. Tre's drumming makes the song flow like water, while mike's bass lines make the water stream in an even more dynamic way.

Billie's solo (I'm assuming it's Billie playing the solo since he also played it live) is one of his best in Green Day's history in my opinion and his vocals are just like that cherry on top of a delicious sundae making it just perfect.

I'm not missing any extra backing vocals at all because I truly believe they would just drown in the song rather than making it even stronger.

I think some more backing vocals would be cool too. In these records the backing vocals are too weak. I like how they compenetrate very well, but in this song I really had a hard time finding out if they were backing vocals or just some effect in Billie's voice. I think the best becking vocals so far in the trilogy are in Stay The Night,
