Bastard of 1967 Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Just for the sake of discussion, the idea of cheating doesn't have to be with another person. It could be drugs, alcohol, or anything that takes your heart away from someone you love. I'll buy into that, especially when as far as we know, Billie's struggle has been with substance abuse. That puts a different spin on Stray Heart -- "I just can't have you" becomes more of an "I'm not healthy enough yet to deserve you" than an "I've got you but -- ooh, look, sparkly!!" Whatever way you look at it, Stray Heart is probably the most personal and poignant song I've heard since Church on Sunday....and setting it to that danceable rhythm straight out of Motown with a bass line borrowed from Mother Mary just pushes it to a completely new level. It's starting to give me chills now, and I can't wait to hear how it fits in with the rest of iDos!.
Neon Light Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 I thought the reason he couldn't have her was because she was saying no. No matter how much he tried to convince her that he would "never stray again", he has to accept that relationships are two-sided, and therefore he cannot only choose to be faithful when it suits him.
heart on a noose Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 So glad that they put Stray Heart on Dos and also chose it for the first single. Song is sweet and really great. I liked it since I've heard recordings from secret shows. I constantly listened The Echoplex version, and got used to it so much that I miss that 'Los Angeles' scream in the middle of studio version.
St. Jimmy the Troublemaker Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Does anybody else feel like this needs a bit of backing vocals? I think that the chorus would be even more "goosebump-giving" with additional voices.
colour_me_stupid_ Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Just listened to it, I really like it
Annie, get your gun Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 To me the song isn't about cheating at all. As I see it, is like he loves someone and wants to be with that person, but he can't cause he's already with someone else. So despite "his stray heart went to another" he can't seem to forget that person, is like an impossible love, and in their hearts and minds, they're never part. It's still strange to me too, I don't know... I guess we'll never know the actual meaning behind this beautiful s♥ng.
Heather. Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 The chorus really confused me because of the "I just can't have you"-s. Like DannyDirnt I wondered whether he could be speaking to the second woman (or the other object of his desire). This really makes sense in the context of an apology. He's branching out like you do in an argument to explain what's going on in his head - even if he doesn't quite understand it. Pretty awesome, wish I could rep you more than once. I agree, the only way the subjects make sense in this song to me is either if he's talking to a second person in the "I just can't have you" parts, or if it's, like Hermione's example, a time in the distant past when say he was in an on-again-off-again relationship and went to someone else and then still wasn't getting back together with her, but wanted to. It's so complicated and more than likely not meant to be taken literally

That's exactly how I see it but I didn't really know how to phrase it, well said I interpret "this stray heart went to another" as meaning that the heart which is now stray already belongs to another, and "I just can't have you" meaning he can't really be with the person because of that. Yet they'll "never part" like you said. It's probably not the actual meaning at all, but that's how I interpret it personally. It's interesting that we can all have such different interpretations of the same song.

But we can agree that it's a wonderful (misterious) song
WrongWayToSalvation Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 "By saying fuck every other word" and you did what exactly? Dumbass Its called a parady. It was intentional. Smh Does anybody else feel like this needs a bit of backing vocals? I think that the chorus would be even more "goosebump-giving" with additional voices. It seems like Billie's voice is being double tracked a lot on the chorus to a lot of songs, so the backing vocals may still be there, they're just harder to hear. Its called a parody. It was intentional. Smh Nice job calling me a dumbass when you couldn't even realize that, considering I wrote the sentence after I pointed that out. Oh the delicious irony! It seems like Billie's voice is being double tracked a lot on the chorus to a lot of songs, so the backing vocals may still be there, they're just harder to hear.
WrongWayToSalvation Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 im not kidding myself. i just don't take everything as seriously as you do. i see bigger problems in the world and yeah, Green Day's music makes me happy. I love the new songs so im not going to do like you. Why are you even on Green Day community? if you're here to bash Green Day.. then leave. sorry, but why the fuck are you on a Green Day forum if you dont like or respect them? Obviously I like Green Day. People here seem to act like every post of mine I'm saying is just "GREEN DAY IS SHIT! GREEN DAY SUCKS! Y'ALL ARE ALL A BUNCH OF GREEN DAY BALL LICKERS!". I don't say that. I just say whatever springs to mind. I'll criticize them if no one else here will. Why? Because no one else is, and I want to show people who are interested in joining this community that you can speak your mind and don't have to be an ass kisser. Is there a brownish hue on my upper lip? If so then its chocolate milk. I say what I think, like everyone else here. I also like to explain why I think what I think, why I believe what I believe. Yeah, I did lose some respect for BJ after that incident. I don't give a fuck if he was fucked up or not, if you make yourself seem like a jackass then you were being a jackass no matter what influence you're under. Him constantly saying he's been around since the late 80s just made it seem like he was striving for attention and made him seem obnoxious. Instead of having that fit, why didn't he just do what he did at Reading? Just keep playing. That would be more worthy of respect except for what he did. He fucked up. You don't want to fuck up on a history making night, because that has a knack of sticking around for awhile. Also Green Day is the first band I ever got into. But I still don't have a bias towards or against them, or any band/artist thay I like. As long as the critisism of the band/artist makes sense, then I'm ok with it.
Hermione Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Expressing your opinions is fine. Expressing the same opinion over and over again and/or going off topic is not fine. Talk about Stray Heart or GTFO of this thread, please. That goes for everyone involved in this off topic discussion, it ends now.
Blond-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 This wait for a proper version is annoying me, I want to get it on my Ipod and figure out what he's playing in that absolutely gorgeous lead break but the radio rip that's going about just now isn't particularly clear.

I really enjoyed Stray Heart, probably more than any other song on iUno!, and what's also good about it is that its a midway track, so it'll hopefully help make it so the middle of the album doesn't drag or seem weaker compared to the beginning and the end of the album. The only thing that can ruin the flow of this album is if Ashley or Baby Eyes are weak tracks
amy_runs Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 this song is a contender for one of my favorite green day songs i cannot stop listening to it

Malleus Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 I told myself I wouldn't overplay this but uh... I think I'm overplaying it. I'LL HOLD THIS SONG AND NEVER LEEETT GOOOO
MikeyB99 Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Dos is shaping up to be possibly my favorite Green Day album...... I really wanna hear a full version of Lazy Bones.
Femme Gauche Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Yeah, really trying to take these songs apart can be dizzying, and when it looks like cheating, especially in the face of all the fucking love songs he's written about one person... It's a little... Well, it takes some mental power.
Malleus Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 It's weird, this song being about cheating never even crossed my mind. "This stray heart went to another, can you recover baby?" really sounds like it could be about doin' the dirty with somebody else, but I honestly don't think it is. Billie seems to have gotten into a mindset where he's writing songs about Adie that he'd write way back when, besides, he just doesn't seem like a cheater. I know we don't know that at all and all that crap but I just FEEL it in my bones. It could very well be about drugs/alcohol though, but (imo) it probably isn't. Very interesting stuff to think about.
abattlecry Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 I think to assume that he's writing the song from his point of view would be silly. A quote I like, and I'm not sure where it's from, says something like "the worst thing you can do as a reader is to assume when the writer says 'I,' they mean themselves." I've always interpreted the song as being about cheating, but I don't want to assume it's from Billie's point of view as the cheater. This song has so many layers it's insane, though!
Homero Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 This song sounds so fresh. I still find it weird that we have a studio version though, it's like I was so used to listen to crappy recordings.
abattlecry Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 I'm with the other Austinite, though, when do we get an official single release?

That is a good quote, because if you listen to stay the night and look at it from Billie's perspective, it looks as if he's cheating on his wife. People just need to understand that at the end of the day, artists just want to make good music, whether it's about themselves or not.
