Alternatively

"Instead of listening to a new song as I would by any other band and forming my own opinion on things I like and dislike about it, and my overall feeling about it, I'll just convince myself it's brilliant regardless of it's actual merits" --Blind fanboys

It still irritates me that fanboys don't accept the complete opposite opinion, i.e people who hate a new song rather than love it. There's an entire spectrum from love to hate and everything in between. But some opinions are more valid than others because some people are more informed. And in this instance by "informed" I mean not just eating up whatever they release/blindly dismissing it because it's Green Day. Obviously people who dismiss music because it's by Green Day will not be found on here, but I just wanted to add that both extremes deserve equal levels of contempt.

If you're referring to me, I don't just blindly like everything they do, I just happen to really like this song and know there are a million similar basslines out there.

If you're not referring to me, I was just being facetious and pointing out that we should just be enjoying the new song and saving any major negativity for later.

Well Stray Heart is a very enjoyable number. So much better than everything on Uno save maybe Kill the DJ. I can understand WrongWay's position because if someone hadn't purchased Uno for me, I don't think I would've bought it. I would have made do with youtube videos more than likely. I think what some people on here don't understand is that, up until Uno, Green Day was a band whose evolution was apparent in all of their CD's. UNO! was admittedly a back to basics record, which a lot of people on here liked, but that also makes it regressive, and people like me who want to see challenges and experimentation are let down by that. Stray Heart sounds like the band taking a new direction that I expected on DOS! but really I just can't wait for TRE! because I think it will have most of the experimental material.

Green Day have really hit the spot with the songs released until now. iUNO! was amazing, but then my favorites from the first one are topped by a preview of Lazy Bones and Stray Heart. This song is simply amazing. The chorus is pure Green Day, and I enjoy the antithesis between the fun instrumental and the sad lyrics. Awesome job guys, iUNO! and iDOS! will, probably, make my top 5 Green Day Albums.

BTW, those saying iDOS! is taking a new direction and iUNO! is regressive, please focus on Stray Heart, It's pure Foxboro Hot Tubs. Didn't the boys say iDOS! was going to be the second FBHT record? It's still regressive, they've made it before.

Holy Mother Mary this song sounds familiar!

But I love love love it...

I just really hope this is not autobiographical and a song to Adie....

I liked it ._. sounds like FBHT when they're sober.

I would like to see proof of this 'sober FBHT.' I'm fairly certain no such creature exists.

I'm guessing since it seemed like less of a party song (even though such FBHT songs exist) it was "given" to GD like It's Fuck Time.

Going to hold out listening as long as I can. Never heard the song, so I have absolutely no idea what it sounds like.

On the weekend I can see myself having a few too many drinks and caving. :runaround:

I really hope all of Dos sounds like FBHT because I loved Stop, Drop and Roll. I was just messing with you, because all of the FBHT performances I've seen videos of are... less than sober.

I've said it before, i think i saw in an interview that iDOS! was going to be a FBHT album.

If it is it could be about any time in his life, when he and Adie were much younger and just had an on/off long distance relationship or before that when he was with a previous girlfriend. Or it could be only partly autobiographical, just partly inspired by different feelings and experiences he's had over the years. Or it might not be autobiographical at all. I highly doubt it's some kind of confession whatever the case, when he writes autobiographical lyrics they tend to just be loosely inspired by experiences throughout his life rather than literal accounts of what's happening in his life at a given time.

But some people didn't enjoy the new song, some people didn't enjoy Uno, some people didn't enjoy the single releases from that either. It's the same circle of comments you will find in the Oh Love/Let Yourself Go/Kill The DJ threads. "I like it." "I love it." "I didn't like it" "It sounds like x,y & z" "The band has lots of songs some are bound to sound similar" "Can't people just have the same opinion as me" *. The first three are valid opinions, the fourth is sometimes just a fact and sometimes an opinion, and the last two are just a pain in the ass to have to read over and over because some people can't handle any opinion that flies against their own.

Like I said you will not find the people who flat out hate everything Green Day do on here, for obvious reasons, so you will get fans of the band who do not like what they're bringing out now, those who don't like 1,039, those who don't like Warning, those who don't like 21st Century Breakdown (like myself). But since they're on this band's forum, it's fair to say their criticisms are coming from a genuine place and not a prejudiced opinion, like both fanboys and "haters" have.

I really like the song as well, as you say the bassline has been done a million times before, it's like the drums on the Know Your Enemy intro. You had people at the time claiming that Green Day ripped some band off with them, as though they haven't been used time and time again over the years by lots of bands. It doesn't bother me, I don't listen to them hoping to find some advanced level of instrumentation, although the musicianship on the American Idiot album still impresses me given the few chords they use.

* EDIT: And yes I know no one has actually said these words but reading behind the lines some people are so intolerant of any kind of criticism that this is basically what they're saying.

Hey guys, please correct the lyrics. He says:

"And you you're not alone

Ohh and now I'm where I belong

We're not alone, ohh I'll hold your heart and never let go"

and

"Everything that I want, I want from you

But I just can't have you

Everything that I need, I need from you

But I just can't have you"

The corrections are in bold.

It's minor but still :)

Man, the song is great. I wasn't very impressed with the live recordings (probably because there weren't any official recordings) but now I have to say I'm really happy, cause the song is awesome. It's like Mother Mary in a Green Day style.

I am SO SO happy with how this song has turned out. Definitely better than everything on Uno, this is the song I was most anticipating to hear and I am completely blown away. Think this is already one of my favourite Green Day songs of all time, it's just... amazing, that's really all I can comprehend right now.

The song would actually make more sense if it was about an on/off long distance relationship, especially with the line "this dog is destined for a home to your heart" and also "I just can't have you." Certainly reflects more of an unstable/uncertain future.

I love the song, but something about it feels incomplete, like it shouldn't end the way it does and it leaves me hanging, I hope "Ashley" (next in the track list) can carry the story. Really excited for ¡Dos! :D

Late to the party, obviously. I love Stray Heart. Its the first time in a long time that Green Day has chosen a HIT single which really packs a punch. The bass, omg! Its one of the best basslines by Mike. I just freaking love it.

The interview was really good, Mike handled it well and explained the current scenario very well.

We love you Mike <3

We love you Green Day <3

This song has everything I love about Green Day while still sounding really fresh. I´m glad they chose it as the first single! Loved it ever since I heard those crappy sounding live recordings

Posted

Pure amazingness. The song is definitely very Foxboro-y... But it's so good and so Green Day and so fresh. A fantastic pick as the first single from ¡Dos!.

Posted

I think that this was a way better Lead single than Oh Love was...

The Bass in this song is so awesome

Posted

Gosh, I just love it. It's so gorgeous. Mike's fucking bass, Tre's pounding drums, that guitar solo, lush vocals, the lyrics = <3

The production is much more along the lines of what I was hoping for (compared to Uno).

Oh and people claiming the bass line is stolen from Jet's song from the noughties or even the early eighties with Town Called Malice are so lulz-worthy. That bass line is far older than that.. A classic that has been used by thousands of old rock bands...It's practically a foundation of rock (and popular music) and any song going down that old skool rock n' roll or rockabilly route has bass like that. That's just the way it is. If you think their sweet rock n' roll/rockabilly references and inspirations is fucking Jet? well....you should probably learn some music history or expand your musical library or something, dayum.

It'll be funny in about a week to read all the "Stray Heart is so boring, shitty first single" etc etc posts.
