porksoda Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 All I can say is that I really identified with American Idiot. I felt like Green Day wrote an album about exactly how I was feeling at the time (and still do, to some extent). The timing was mind-blowing. I remember I bought it the morning it came out before I went to school, and listened to it during lunch, but it was really on my walk home that day that I really was blown away by it. It's a masterpiece. One of the most perfect albums ever written.
adeline-03 Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 I think that this CD is just extraordinary, and this story is a good idea !
localinsomniac Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 It's a complete album of great songs, with a message that was very powerful at the time. Now that Bush is out of office and things have calmed down a bit, that message predictably rings a little more hollow. But it's one of those timeless records that I'll never grow tired of hearing.
Nebula Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 I think it's a good album but I don't consider it to be a masterpiece. And its reputation as a political album just annoys me. The only political songs on the thing are the title track and Holiday. I also think as a concept album it has a pretty flimsy story. Boulevard of Broken Dreams annoyed me when the album came out and still annoys me now. Made for radio, generic rock. The end is pretty cool though. Jesus Of Suburbia and Letterbomb are two of the best songs they've ever done.
Marrymebilliejoe Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 Well American Idiot for me was the first Green Day album I ever listened to...and I think it's an amazing album! I love the fact that it has a storyline intertwined within the songs; I mean they fit perfectly! And yes, as everyone says it is a "masterpiece." It truly is. But surprisingly, it is not my favorite Green Day album! xP I am more of an older Green Day fan, but I still rock out to ever American Idiot song when it comes out, especially Homecoming, by far one of my favorite songs by Green Day (:
Dirntbag Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 How can you not want to have sex with that album? It's what got me into Green Day in the first place. A few of AI's songs were on the radio and I remember really liking them. My brother would play random music, and I really liked the songs he played, but never knew what they were. I finally found out one day that all of these no-name songs I had fallen in love with were on the same album; American Idiot by Green Day. There's not one song I dislike on there, they're all really relateable and political and just the best music. I really want to see the show, I think it's amazing the story it tells. The lyrics are so well thought out and clever, and to have two nine minute songs on the same CD is something to be proud of. I will never get tired of this album.
Holly Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 Referring to your initial post, I'm not really sure how I feel about the story it tells. I've never really cared too much about the story or paid a lot of attention to it. I mean, I know what the storyline is meant to be, but I've never thought about it whilst I listen to the album. That will probably change when I see the musical in December. As for the actual music, it is my favourite album of all time, the album which changed my music taste completely and concequently shaped my personality into the person I am today. The songs are the most powerful I've ever heard and the album is so diverse with stuff such as JoS and Give Me Novacaine there is something for every mood. It's just fucking amazing, I'm pretty certain I'll never find music which means as much to me as that album does.
Homero Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 I think American Idiot is a masterpiece. I love the whole concept, and the lyrics are beautiful. I can appreciate it much more now that 7 years has passed since I first heard the album.
