If you could have chosen them, what singles would you have chosen for each album?

1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours: 409 In Your Coffeemaker, Going to Pasalacqua

Kerplunk!: Who Wrote Holden Caulfield, One For the Razorbacks, 2000 Light Years Away

Dookie: I actually think the singles they chose were pretty spot on this era

Insomniac: I don't really see this as a "singles" album anyway, but I approve of the ones they chose.

Nimrod: Scattered instead of Redundant

Warning: Singles were pretty spot on, but Church On Sunday coulda been pretty good

American Idiot: Spot on with the singles.

21st Century Breakdown: Murder City shoulda been released; again, not much of a singles album but 21 Guns was an obvious choice

Uno: Stay the Night should have been the radio single

I'm gonna pick three from every album

1039-- Going To Pasalacqua, Road to Acceptance, and Paper Lanterns

Kerplunk-- Christie Road, Welcome to Paradise, and Android

Dookie-- (I think they got it right) Longview, Basket Case, and When I Come Around

Insomniac-- Armatage Shanks, Geek Stink Breath, and 86

Nimrod-- Hitchin' a Ride, The Grouch, and Good Riddance

Warning-- (God this one is hard) Castaway, Waiting, and Minority

American Idiot-- American Idiot (I'm not sure it's in the top three, but I think you sort of have to release it) Jesus of Suburbia, and Holiday

21st Century Breakdown-- East Jesus Nowhere, Restless Heart Syndrome, and American Eulogy

UNO!-- Nuclear Family, Kill the DJ, and Troublemaker

For Dookie, i would have chosen Sassafras Roots, Chump and Burnout as singles.

For Insomniac, i would have chosen Westbound Sign, Stuart and the Avenue and Brat as singles.

For Nimrod, i would have chosen Reject, Uptight and Worry Rock as singles.

For Warning, i would have chosen Deadbeat Holiday, Jackass and Fashion Victim as singles.

Those are all songs I had to hear a million times before liking them. Terrible choices :P The singles are chosen because they're the most catchy, you can definitely on Dookie that they chose the most catchy songs. Sassafras roots has a theme of boredom, so does Longview, but Longview are 1000 times more catchy.

I think if singles were going to be the best song on the album then why people go for the album

to me singles up to 21CB were good choices

but for 21CB I go for: Know your enemy, 21 guns, East Jesus Nowhere, Before the lobotomy, Restless heart syndrome

For UNO: Oh love , Kill the DJ (better vid and not just for UK), And Stay The Night with a real vid

I think that most singles choices they've made are fine. But with Uno it could have been different. I like Oh Love but it wasn't a great first single. Stay The Night should have been the first one and have a good video.

Even though my favorite songs by Green Day are mostly non-singles, I agree with most single choices that have been made by the band so far. Singles are meant to promote the albums, so they need to be catchy, commercial and radio-friendly.

I wouldn't have chosen Burnout and Armatage Shanks as singles, for example. Those are two of my favorite GD songs, but it took me a few listens before I truly started to enjoy them. The general public wouldn't have even bothered.

39/Smooth - Green Day (a perfect introduction to the band), Going to Pasalacqua, 16, Road to Acceptance.

Kerplunk - Christie Road and Private Ale. If these two were released as singles they might have achieved worldwide success earlier than Dookie.

Dookie - I wouldn't change anything, all the choices made by the label were good.

Insomniac - Westbound Sign as the lead single to propel the album into the same level of success as Dookie. Geek Stink Breath and Stuck With Me afterwards.

nimrod. - King for a Day, to coincide with the ska revival that was booming at the time. Hitchin' a Ride and Worry Rock as other singles.

Warning - wouldn't change anything.

American Idiot - Letterbomb, Extraordinary Girl.

21st Century Breakdown - Peacemaker, Know Your Enemy, Horseshoes and Handgrenades.

Uno - Kill the DJ, Loss of Control, Troublemaker.

Dos - Fuck Time, Fuck Time, Fuck Time.

39/Smooth - Going To Pasalacqua

Kerplunk - Welcome To Paradise, 2,000 Light Years Away

Dookie - Longview, Basket Case, When I Come Around (can't argue with their choices here)

Insomniac - Geek Stink Breath, 86

Nimrod - Nice Guys Finish Last, Hitchin' A Ride, Scattered

Warning - Minority, Macy's Day Parade

American Idiot - American Idiot, Holiday/Boulevard Of Broken Dreams (as the one release)

21st Century Breakdown - 21st Century Breakdown, Peacemaker, Horseshoes & Handgrenades

Uno! - Nuclear Family, Kill The DJ

Dos! - It's Fuck Time, Lazy Bones

Tre! - 99 Revolutions (only song I've heard from it, has to be a single mainly so I don't have to wait till the album comes out to hear the studio version haha)

I personally believe albums should usually have 2 singles unless there's a reason for it to have 3, like Nimrod/21st Century Breakdown you need to have a flavour of the different kinds of songs on them and Dookie is an absolute classic, just full of singles really, but other than that I think 2 singles covers most of the albums. I always thought they hugely overdid the American Idiot single releases, way too many of them, although to be fair to them it worked. Letterbomb and Having A Blast are my favourite Green Day songs but neither of them would work as singles. Letterbomb particularly has too much of the American Idiot plot and is too self referential to stand on its own.

Yeah, Kill the DJ is weak to many people but it's actually very very catchy, and so it Let Yourself Go. Though Fell for You is more catchy that Fell for You and they have about the same tempo. I would have released FFY instead.

I agree SamMacs about the rest of the singles being good choices. I think they got Uno wrong, probably would have gone with a Rusty James as a single because it shows Green Days lyrical maturity and is a little bit of a fuck you to people doubting them...and its a f'ing great song!
