I don't think its that necessary, but it would be better if you appear in it. Or maybe you could just hide your face with the sign you hold.

Really? C'mon, it doesn't hurt. It took a few shots but finally I sent a picture with me in.

But it shouldn't be a problem when you're just writing a note and take a picture of it. Support is support, isn't it?
