21stcenturyidiot Posted September 20, 2012 Author Posted September 20, 2012 Thing is, songs like Whatsername, See the Light and even Oh Love have that "end of album" feel. They're not as upbeat and fast as the earlier tracks. They bring a sense of closure, which is why TOYL would have been an awesome closing track
Angelfuck. Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Walking Contradiction. C-c-c-combo breaker
JellyTime Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Burnout. "I declare I don't care no more" - it's like punk's thoughts. Perfect opening for great punk album
GuitarPunk94 Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 should i start a vote with "best 2nd album song.." ? voted for FOD!!!
21stcenturyidiot Posted September 20, 2012 Author Posted September 20, 2012 should i start a vote with "best 2nd album song.." ? voted for FOD!!! the reason I did the opener/closer is cos in my opinion they're the two most important tracks on an album. If the opening and closing song are bad, even if the album rocks, it can leave a "bitter taste in your mouth"
Angelfuck. Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Burnout. When the drums kick in, immediately followed by "I declare I don't care no more, I'm burning up and out and growing bored," you know you're about to hear a rude, half-hour ode to ennui, girls and shameless masturbation.
localinsomniac Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 It may change after I get around to finally hearing UNO, but my vote for now is Whatsername. I liked the Almost Acoustic Christmas performance with Billie's sarcastic "ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL" introduction.
mechanicalman Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 I like Macy's Day Parade. Much like the whole album it's a bit underrated.
Lauren Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Burnout is not my favorite song on the list, but it's the best song Green Day could've used as an opener. Not sure about lyric-wise (although it's probably one of the top 3), but definitely music wise, it's the best opener.
Lauren Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 I voted for F.O.D. They say good night. (pretending that All By Myself isn't after it)
21stcenturyidiot Posted September 20, 2012 Author Posted September 20, 2012 I voted for F.O.D. They say good night. (pretending that All By Myself isn't after it) I thought I wouldn't include ALMS just cos it's more of a joke track
Comic Sans Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Whatsername will win, no need of a poll.
Fuzz Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Oh man, I really fucked this up. Didn't mean to merge both threads. Well I did, but it wasn't till after I did that I noticed it was actually two different things. OP, you can edit your first post and add a second question directly to this thread (on the right column while you're editing, go to "Manage Topic Poll" then "Add Another Question") rather than two separate threads. Sorry about that.
Pieces of Truth Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 I have to say either American Idiot or Burnout. But since I had to choose... AI.

KatherineKerplunk Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 The build up on Song of the Century to 21st Century Breakdown gave me goose bumps when I saw them live. So I went for that.
Gwen Stacy Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 The build up on Song of the Century to 21st Century Breakdown gave me goose bumps when I was them live. So I went for that. This was my favorite part of the 21st Century Breakdown tour, having Song of the Century come on and everybody singing along before the wild ups and downs of 21st Century Breakdown. I think it's an epic album opener, gives us a glimpse of the whole album and is lyrically and musically engrossing, that's why it gets my vote. Whatshername gets my vote for the closing track. It wraps up the story line nice and neat. It's both a haunting and mature look at the one that got away. Gives me chills whenever I do a full album listen through
gd86arg Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 opening for me nice guys finish last and ending was too hard to decided between macy's and whatsername but I choose whatsername
Neutral Milk Hotel Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Armatage shanks and whatshername. 2000 Lightyears Away and Macy's Day Parade are close seconds, though.
EastCaitNowhere Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 I have to say Whatsername is the best closing track, because it pretty much sums up the concept of American Idiot and it's just a great song in general But opening track, has to be Nuclear Family as of late, because I haven't stopped listening to Uno since it leaked, haha :')
Annie, get your gun Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Fiuuu! You change the title topic but I voted for my right one Whatsername is hearbreaking but simply perfect for that end.
greendepent Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 I'd vote for Armatage Shanks, but 21st CB is so fucking epic that I can't ignore it.
SamMacs Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Burnout is the best opening track without a doubt. Closing tracks is a bit more difficult to choose. Walking Contradiction, Macy's Day Parade & Whatsername are all among my top 10 Green Day songs. But I went with Macy's Day Parade because that it's on (my favourite album) Warning
Mandy_PunkRock Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Opening: Song of the Century/21st Century Breakdown Closing: Whatsername
frunsi Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 1,039 isn't an actual album, it's a compilation, so IWTBA isn't really an album closer. the judge's daughter is the 39/smooth closer. i'd suggest you to change that
