Guest Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 based on foreverly, i think his vocals are doing fine! haha Yeah, if you see my next post, I talked about that. In the studio he has the benefit of doing as many takes as he likes, plus the added option of editing his vocal tracks. Live is where we find out what his voice is really made of, and it's kinda terrible right now.

Guest Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 when did you start noticing? 2012? i thought they were great on the 21stCB tour so who knows what happened in between then Yeah, 2012. The 21stCB tour is probably his strongest performance ever, vocally. If you listen to the pro-recordings (I linked one of the bonus tracks from the Trilogy in one of my posts) you can hear even on the less challenging songs his vocals are pretty rubbish.

Awesome Of Fuck definitely had vocal editing added to it, but it was still great. It's probably a combination of the escalation of his drink/drug problem and just the fact that he'd been doing all the Broadway stuff. Probably wore out his voice.

Guest Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 truuue but since hes off drugs and alcohol now I feel like it should be better again. hmmm. well, we can only wait! If anything his voice is getting worse. Although that said, it was a bit better at Reading/Leeds.
alexandra_1039 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 If anything his voice is getting worse. Although that said, it was a bit better at Reading/Leeds. yeah i almost felt too bad to admit that, i doubt age is a factor right? lol.

Long story short: His voice is up and down because he's been abusing it at the same time as making progress in terms of technical ability.
green day is Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 yeah i almost felt too bad to admit that, i doubt age is a factor right? lol. Age is one of the biggest factors in the changing of his voice, but not when referring to it getting bad, just changing overall.

I don't think you're right about the vocal editing in AAF. Firstly Billie said that there is no editing and secondly if you listen to the songs in several videos there is no substantial difference.

I'll let Tom handle this, as he's covered this in the Unpopular Opinions thread at length
Jax Teller Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I'll let Tom handle this, as he's covered this in the Unpopular Opinions thread at length However, we will hardly hear again his voice into the form that was 3-4 years ago.

AAF did not have vocal editing watching youtube cell phone footage of the SAME songs and its there too

Regarding this point, though, I remember Rob Cavallo saying in one of the Trilogy interviews that Billie Joe only did remarkably few takes of the songs. Plus, in the first interview Billie Joe and Norah did for Foreverly Norah mentions she liked working with him because he's "fast", that doesn't really sound to me like he needed forever to get his vocals right. I'm not an expert, but I assume it would have been difficult to edit his voice much on Foreverly because they sang everything together and it had to harmonise. I'd also like to know if you base your theses about the recent state of his voice (i.e. after rehab) on anything other than that Rock am Ring show because, well, that's just one show - that could have been a bad day or whatever. After the first shows last year the tour threads were full of people saying how he sounded better than ever, he sounded the best they'd ever heard him, they'd never heard him sing so beautifully before - and the list goes on like that. That kind of makes me wonder. So maybe his voice was in a better state during that US tour. Or did everyone just hear what they wanted to hear?

Billie had just gotten out of rehab—no one really wanted to criticize him at that point. And while I'll let Ceadog speak for himself, I'm pretty sure he said he only showed Rock am Ring twice because it's one of the few proshot shows we have. Reading's just as bad.
Spike Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 My issue with Reading was how many mistakes he made in his guitar playing. I thought his voice was fine, but he missed loads of guitar cues, most notably in Jesus Of Suburbia, and obviously messed Waiting up spectacularly. He was on fire at Brixton a couple of days before, though, so I've no idea what that was all about.

It would have been just as plausible (to me at least) if people had scrutinized his vocal performance after rehab to see if anything had changed, if he'd got better or worse. Even some of the articles written about these shows describe the state of his voice favourably (so not just biased fans). They could have just as well written something like their best days are over, they could have written them off. And to the people in Europe who saw them the first time again after rehab, he'd also just been out of rehab - I don't think the general situation was all too different from a few month earlier in the US and yet people were apparently less willing to withhold criticism.

Well that just makes the fact that he's so awful live these days all the more puzzling. Maybe it's a reappearance of his notorious stage fright, or it's just age and a lifetime of shitty vocal care catching up on him. Yeah I just used Rock am Ring show because there's fuck all good pro-shot footage apart from Reading and World Stage. World Stage is dreadful too, but Reading was at least a slight improvement.

Jon Benjamin Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 On a Blink forum people were talking about MTV airing a special called 1998 rarest music videos in 1998 and 2006. There was one for "Voyeur" by Blink and someone said there was a Green Day video. Anyone know what song would have a video that didn't get released?
