Liam Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 kinda tired of staring at the back at your head while you correct everything mister perfect. Was just pointing out for future reference. It's kinda what I'm meant to do as a mod.
Punkfreak1414 Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 How come billies voice changes every album? Not that I'm complaining I love it more and more but a lot of bands singers sound basically the same ever album but billies gets...different? Like it American idiot it sounded a lot more punk, then in 21CBD it sounded really raspy, then in the trilogy it seemed like he voice was "loud" and out there over everything else? Any explaination?

Different production. Plus years of drinking and smoking will fuck up your voice.
The Disappearing Boy Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 The GSB thing just sounds like a burp. The guitar book describes it as a 'vocal croak effect'.

Billie is a strange case. Most singers' voices drop as they get older (look at Robert Plant for a perfect example of that), but because of Billie's drinking his voice is actually getting significantly higher. On top of that there are differing production techniques across the albums. His voice seems more powerful and loud on the Trilogy because of how quiet and weak the guitars are. The GSB thing just sounds like a burp. The guitar book describes it as a 'vocal croak effect'."Vocal croak effect" is the most stuck up description of a burp I've ever heard

WhiteTim Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Can drinking really do that? Yeaj drinking excessively can alter your voice... Like listen to country and I mean REALncountry not this soft Brad Praisley crap but listen to a old country artist like listen to David Allan Coe his voice on his first album Penitentiary Blues to his latest one DAC Back his voice is more rougher cause of the years smoking and drinking... tho drinking alters peoples voices differently as well Billies voice has been altered but since hes has had vocal training for broadway its still sound good different
Guest Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Just listen to Tom Waits. The guy owes his career to booze fucking up his voice.
Spike Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Can drinking really do that? Yeah, for sure. It's actually really unusual for the voice to go higher, usually it drops, but it's certainly true in Billie's case. Listen to the difference between Insomniac-era performances and recent performances of the same songs. It's crazy.
green day is Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 You guys have no fucking clue what you're talking about. "lol his voice is higher cause booze" Different production. This is one reason, and another is that he's been going through training both formal (eg; for the musical) and over time through pure experience. That's why he has a larger range. Aging only takes effect in the difference between, say, 1039 and the trilogy. You can't compare AI to 21CBD and chalk that up to aging. Plus there's the fact that he just doesn't sing every song the same way, even within the same album. because of Billie's drinking his voice is actually getting significantly higher. This is extremely retarded and I hope you know that. Can drinking really do that? It can change your voice, sure. What it can't do is magically expand your range and make it higher. It's actually really unusual for the voice to go higher, usually it drops, Maybe that should be your clue that what you're saying is wrong. His voice is higher because he's been working his entire life on his voice and his range is expanding.
Hermione Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I think he just sang in a more bratty, sullen way when he was younger, which will naturally sound lower. Same with how he spoke, he used to be all moody and speaking in a low voice but now he's older and more cheerful his naturally higher sounding speaking voice shines through. Plus he's practiced and trained his voice over the years so he can reach higher notes. The actual pitch he sings at hasn't changed much as a whole over the years I don't think though, the fact that I can comfortably sing along to all their albums with my limited singing pitch range tells me that.

Yes it has. The lowest note he's ever sung is in Give Me Novacaine (maybe not ever but as far as records go) and his highest barring falsetto is in the live versions of 21 Guns. Unless you've got a couple octaves' range yourself, you're probably not singing the same notes as him. It still sounds nice if you're an octave above or below what he's singing. [Edit:] Went back in the thread and found this from when I asked about it before. It's no coincidence that nearly all of them are from AI and after. Voice type: Low tenor Vocal range: A2-C♯5(-G♯5) Significant high notes: G♯5 ("Classic Rock Medley" live Detroit 2010) C♯5 ("Rock and Roll" live) C5 ("21st Century Breakdown" live) B4 ("Rock and Roll" live, "21st Century Breakdown" live, "Highway to Hell" live, "Static Age" live) A4 ("Jesus Of Suburbia", "American Eulogy", "Static Age" live, "We Are the Champions" live, "Baba O'Riley" live) G♯4 ("Jesus Of Suburbia", "American Idiot" Live, "Oh Love", "Going to Pasalaqua", "King for a Day/Shout" live, "We Are the Champions" live) G4 ("Static Age") F♯4 ("When I Come Around", She", "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams", "Waiting" Live, "21st Century Breakdown", "We Are the Champions" live) Significant low notes: A2 ("Working Class Hero", "Oh Love", Guns N' Roses Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame speech) B2 ("Give Me Novacaine", "Whatsername")

I agree that it's changed in that he can and does hit higher and lower notes. I just mean the kind of average pitch he sings at isn't that much different. His range has expanded but he hasn't gone from singing like Barry White to singing like the Bee Gees. Are you sure he doesn't sing lower in Rotting or Mechanical Man? Or in the lowest parts of Whatsername ("all of the photographs" and "now I wonder how Whatsername has been")? Those are the only songs that are too low for me
green day is Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 What part? I think it's in the verse, I'll check the tab book real quick cause it includes the vocal melody's notation. Gimme a sec and I'll edit this post. [Edit:] I'm almost sure that it's on the word "inside" but like I've written below, the tab book just doesn't show drops that low in the melody. Are you sure he doesn't sing lower in Rotting or Mechanical Man? Or in the lowest parts of Whatsername ("all of the photographs" and "now I wonder how Whatsername has been")? Those are the only songs that are too low for me My last post lists Whatsername on the same place as Novacaine, with B2. The tab book doesn't show those drops in pitch because of reasons dumb reasons) but I know what you're talking about. I know that the drops are there, at least, the books just don't show what they actually are. I don't really know about Rotting (although that one seems plausible) or Mechanical Man. Someone would have to find the vocal melodies.

I think Rotting has lower parts because I can kind of hit the lowest parts in Whatsername and Give Me Novacaine (can still 100% them on Green Day Rock Band ) but I find Rotting even more of a stretch, although that might just be because much more of it is very low rather than just a couple of words. In Mechanical Man it's really just the line "Now I'm a mechanical man", seems as low or lower than those two. Obviously I'm not exactly an acid test though lol. Any idea what the highest he's sung is? This interests me!
DookieLukie Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 For some reason, on Spotify, Green Day has a listed tour date for March 29th in Illinois. Any explanation for this?

G#5 from the Classic Rock Medley in Detroit 09 is listed in that quote I posted above, but I'm almost positive he goes higher in the chorus of 21 Guns live. If you count his falsetto, though, it would be Restless Heart Syndrome.
Cath Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 For some reason, on Spotify, Green Day has a listed tour date for March 29th in Illinois. Any explanation for this? is it supposed to be a reliable source? edit; are you sure it's not march 29th 2013?
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 edit; are you sure it's not march 29th 2013? That was the Moline date last year, so it'd make sense...
Punkfreak1414 Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Does anyone know how many times a week and how long green day has band practice for? Not during tour I mean when there making an album. Or at least any guesses?
