Spike Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Is there a story behind her being chosen to sing it or anything? Billie said part of Whatsername's character was inspired by Bikini Kill's song Rebel Girl, so I assume she was brought in as she was an apt choice for the voice of Whatsername.
Asa. Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Well, yeah I've seen those. But I don't know shit about guitar or drums, so I can't judge. Let's get Zack in here to tell us I think personally they both suck at each others instruments.
Cath Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 I get the impression Billie is a far better drummer than Tre is a guitarist. did you only conclude this by the 2 videos? because there are almost 20 years between the 2
Spike Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 did you only conclude this by the 2 videos? because there are almost 20 years between the 2 No, mainly years of being aware of them swapping instruments, and seeing them do it in person in 2010. Plus the fact that Billie records drums on demos, while Tre doesn't play guitar on them generally.
green day is Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Well, yeah I've seen those. But I don't know shit about guitar or drums, so I can't judge. Let's get Zack in here to tell us Billie's good and I'm p.sure Tré taught him cause he uses fills in the exact same way. Drums aren't hard to get the hang of at all, though, the only real hurdles you have to overcome are physical (ie; actually getting your sticks to the drums in time, plus using the pedal is way harder than it looks at first). Tré is surprisingly good at guitar, his strumming is still a bit clumsy in the DLS video but in the Like a Rat Does Cheese one from the AI era (the one outside to fans) he's gotten so much better. On the subject, Mike is p.much on par with Billie at guitar which, to me, suggests that he practices on it greater than or equal to the amount that he practices on bass, which makes sense because guitar skills translate right to bass skills (not the other way around, though). Plus the fact that Billie records drums on demos, while Tre doesn't play guitar on them generally. What does that have to do with anything? Billie writes the songs, of course he's gonna do the parts on the demos.
Spike Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 What does that have to do with anything? Billie writes the songs, of course he's gonna do the parts on the demos. There's no 'of course' about it, my point was that he's clearly good enough a drummer to record drums to a high enough standard to get the demos down. Missing You is a more complex drum part than any guitar part Tre has played on record.
Certified Nimrod Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Billie's good and I'm p.sure Tré taught him cause he uses fills in the exact same way. Tre said in an Idiot Nation Q&A that they both are just "extremely talented" and learned each instrument on their own.
Todd Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Is there a story behind her being chosen to sing it or anything? You're not a Pinhead Gunpowder fan I take it?
Certified Nimrod Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 You're not a Pinhead Gunpowder fan I take it? I've only heard a few songs. Why?
Spike Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 I've only heard a few songs. Why? Billie wrote a song about Kathleen Hanna - http://www.plyrics.com/lyrics/pinheadgunpowder/kathleen.html
WhiteTim Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Is there a story behind her being chosen to sing it or anything? She's a legend in the underground scene...
Certified Nimrod Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 She's a legend in the underground scene... That's cool... I do this because I'm WhiteTim...
WhiteTim Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 That's cool... I do this because I'm WhiteTim... Lol
green day is Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 She's a legend in the underground scene... Ha, "in the underground scene".
Todd Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Ha, "in the underground scene". I don't know why that's funny, but I laughed and liked your post anyways
Todd Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Kathleen Hanna is a worm? Even worse... a mole person (dun dun dun!!!!)
Spike Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Even worse... a mole person (dun dun dun!!!!)
Todd Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Damn, your new pic has really thrown me off tonight...
WhiteTim Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Ha, "in the underground scene".Well Bikini Kill arent mainstream band... they were never signed to a label major or indie label as they put their own records by themselves so yes underground or indie if you chose to prefer that word... They started the Riot Grrrl movement influenced alot of punk groups...

Rancid never signed but it would hardly make sense to call the guy that wrote for Pink and has songs in multiple movies "Underground". Indie fits, yeah.

Which is distributed by Sony Records oh im sorry RED but owned and distriubted by Sony Music Group... That's a big jump from Bikini Kill who had NO distributor at all just THEM Bad comparison a band whose album was distributed by one of the largest music company to a band who "distributor" office was Kathleen's apartment... But still there arent that many people that knows who Kathleen Hanna or Bikini Kill are... hence I said underground scene which is how she refers to herself as well...
green day is Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Wasnt Rancid on Epitaph? Which is distributed by Sony Records oh im sorry RED but owned and distriubted by Sony Music Group... Rancid signed in '93, and I can't find any info but I don't think that RED was involved at that time. But still there arent that many people that knows who Kathleen Hanna or Bikini Kill are... hence I said underground scene which is how she refers to herself as well... Bad comparison or not, this is a very disputable claim. The fact that Kathleen Hannah appeared on AI alone helps to show how famous she is. Plus, like you said, she helped start the Riot Grrl movement. She's mainstream as hell.

Kathleen is far from mainstream you are fooling yourself if you think that
Spike Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 The only thing that Kathleen Hanna being on American Idiot helps to show is that she's friends with Green Day. Lady Cobra featured on a Green Day song, and you can't tell me that shows she's famous.
