Does anyone have any information about the pirate radio station the band set up to broadcast the writing of American Idiot? Any recordings or anything?

Are there any recordings of Like A Rat Does Cheese apart from the version they did on the radio along with Dominated Love Slave that time?

I have no idea where I got this from, but it's not the radio version:

I thought they did that when doing FBHT

Possibly. They did before Breakdown was released.

Oh, ok. I mean... I found this out from the comments in some Ultimate Guitar article so it could easily be total shit, or at least someone who needs to check their facts. In any case, is there anything available for anything they did like that? No idea why I missed it at the time.

As far as I know, no recordings exist. They didn't advertise the station (cause it was illegal). You'd have to accidently stumble upon it while tuning your radio, within range of the studio or basement or wherever they were broadcasting from.

Fair enough, I did suspect it'd be a long shot! Thanks for the info.

Well, Song of The Century was recorded off that station...

Other than that, no. Also it was during the recording of Breakdown, not AI or FBHT.

(cause it was illegal).

No it wasn't.

Yeah I think the only reason anyone even knew about them doing it during making AI is because they talked about it in interviews afterwards, no one knew at the time so there's no recordings or reports of anyone hearing it (which is a shame because they've said one of the things they recorded and played among loads of experiments was a whole album's worth of dirty Christmas songs). During Foxboro/21st CB times they gave hints about it such as zooming in on some numbers in a studio video which turned out to be the radio frequency and talking about it before they'd finished working on the album, so a couple of GDCers who lived nearby tried finding it a few times. But they were never successful . Probably the only people who heard it were people driving past who happened to pick it up on their car radio.

This might be a really frivolous question, and probably one without a proper answer, but in The Death Of St. Jimmy why does Billie say "The St. Jimmy is the spark in the night"? It's really weird and not even necessary in order for it to fit the phrase. I doubt there's some kind of reference, but I figured I'd ask cause I can't help but to think about it every time I hear the song.

Freaking. Awesome.

I think if the line was written out it's actually be "The saint, Jimmy, is the spark in the night." So, it's like telling you that the saint's name is Jimmy.

I could be wrong, though.

I'd totally accept that answer except that the lyrics book actually punctuates very correctly (Except this weird shit when parentheses are involved) and it isn't like that there. Still possible, though.

Maybe it's a subtle statement on Jimmy's being an ideal embodied as a person rather than an actual human being. If, for some utterly lunatic reason, the plot had been different and Jesus were masquerading as Arnold Schwarzenegger, it would say "The Governator is the spark in the night" because The Governator is a costume Jesus wears; that's how this line works, because Jimmy is a costume, not a person. Picture it as "The Saint Jimmy [costume] is the spark in the night." It implies that Jimmy is a thing that all people have, rather than one individual.

...wow, that was some serious retconning I just did there.

Does anyone have a video of this when Billie took his shirt off during the 21st CB tour?
