Green Day Q&A Thread

Also, he's credited on Kerplunk for helping produce it or something... and I'm sure I've said this before, but he could at least cash those checks and put the money in his kid's college fund, jeez.

Again, Aaron Cometbus isn't known for being 100% literal 100% of the time. We have no fucking clue what he actually does with his checks, and especially not twenty years after he left the band.

What Green Day songs would be easiest for someone learning bass? I can play Green Day and Last Ride In on bass right now and parts of JAR and Kill the DJ and Paper Lanterns.

There are basically two classes of Mike Dirnt bass: Really fucking hard, and really fucking easy. Just look up your favorites and if they're too hard come back to them later. I'd personally recommend putting the effort into learning Nightlife, Longview, and No One Knows if you're looking for songs that don't just follow the guitar. Those aren't necessarily the easiest, but they'll both teach you the most and be the most impressive and, in Longview's case, recognizable.

The title is basically self explanatory, I'm just curious to know the way green day writes there music ^_^

All of Green Day's music is written and made by Billie Joe Armstrong,Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool.

Except where noted.

Though most lyrics/songs are written by Billie.

Billie Joe is the main lyric writer of the band.

I'm pretty sure for a lot of songs, he also makes up the sounds. However, I do recall an interview where they said that for a song like "Homecoming", they each wrote a separate part and they put it all together.

Billie writes most of the lyrics (except where it will say in the album liner notes), and they all write their own instrument parts.

See that's what I was wondering does billie come in with the guitar riff and the guys just follow him? And is there any known riff or solo that Jason has made up in the trilogy?

Posted

I know Bille does most of the lyrics - Mike and Tre have done so occasionally.

As for music, I imagine one of them comes up with an idea, probably chord progressions or something, and the rest of the band fill it out with their own parts.

the drunk bunny writes everything and records it all ..green day just plays the live shows cause the bunny gets too drunk to play..

Yeah, I think he comes up with a riff and the rest of the band just follows him. Since Jason's now a member of the band as the music on the trilogy is credited to Green Day, I'm pretty sure that means Jason came up with his own parts (I don't know what parts are his though lol).

Nominated quote right there Matt!

OMG I JUST NOMINATED IT.

Mike wrote the basslines for Longview and No One Knows, and the songs then grew from those basslines. But I think usually they will be based around Billie Joe's lyrics/riff.

Maurice Starr wrote the early stuff

Justin Bieber writes the new stuff

Typically Billie Joe does most of the lyrics, and a lot of the music parts as well. He brings a song idea to the rest of the band, and they mess around with it as a band, to perfect it. Sometimes, Mike or Tre will write the lyrics. Some songs are written as a group. Mike and Tre might come up with ideas that change the song tremendously.

I tried No One Knows and Longview, can't do them yet, however I'm gonna keep working at No One Knows cause I love that song

And for those who don't know about Frank Farian, he was about Milli Vanilli and Boney M.

OK, back on topic: how many versions of the Dookie vinyl are there and which ones are considered to be better, sound-wise?

I had trouble with it even on guitar, and it's like ten times easier there. Only got it down on bass a couple weeks ago, it's definitely worth it.

I'm playing bass tabs on an acoustic guitar :P

I need to get good at this shit first before I buy something big like a bass

Oh. Well like on bass No One Knows is played up around the fourteenth fret, but the exact same notes can be played lower on the neck on a guitar and it's easier, but if you plan on buying a bass at all you should practice the version you'll see in bass tabs.

Yeah, I played it lower on the neck, I was gonna say that but I didn't know how to word it... I have limited guitar terminology vocab

It won't sound right if you do that on a bass.

Yeah, I know that. But on acoustic guitar it works just fine
