fatherotti Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Gilman is probably fake and no. Yup that's what they said a while back. I got it from Setlist FM so it is indeed fake.
OneSongInFrench Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 I may sound ignorant here, and Mods please feel free to put me in place, however the authority on song lyrics/copyright - the BMI database, has officially listed these people as the authors of 21 Guns. Songwriter/Composer Current Affiliation CAE/IPI # ARMSTRONG BILLY JOE ASCAP 336439846 BOWIE DAVID PRS 3960406 PHILLIPS JOHN E A BMI 223659175 PRITCHARD MIKE ASCAP 336464947 WRIGHT FRANK E III ASCAP 336477052 What is going on here? haha
Heather. Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 LOL wut? And on that note, who is John Phillips? And yeah, I don't think ASCAP would have Billy spelled wrong.
Moriarty Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 it's not fake, there are probably sections within 21 guns that sound like a David Bowie song (although which one i don't know). it means he gets royalties. if green day didn't do this, Bowie could have decided to pursue legal action against the band for "ripping him off", and nobody wants that. it's keeps everything above board
xSparkyx Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Well the actual point is making the beautiful music and they have reached that point. All of them are great artists. If for making a song that takes everyone's breath away help is needed, then why wouldn't they get help? I don't really care.
OneSongInFrench Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 For the record lol here's the link from BMIs site http://repertoire.bmi.com/title.asp?blnWriter=True&blnPublisher=True&blnArtist=True&keyid=10612228&ShowNbr=0&ShowSeqNbr=0&querytype=WorkID totally spells Billy -- like that, I cringe!
Heather. Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Actually, wasn't there indeed a Bowie song that everyone thought sounded like 21 Guns? (Can't remember which right now... was it Heroes? Maybe it wasn't even 21 Guns, and I hardly even heard the resemblance, but I do remember it being discussed once...)
Sarcasm Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 I've never heard of it, and that phase was when my GD hype was on it's peak.Wikipedia says it's written by Billie, so I'm gonna trust that for now. It's not like news avbout 4 year old songs comes out often anyway. Also I'm merging this with the Q/A thread
Anja Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Wouldn't it be credited in the booklet if that was the case? I don't think it is. And to add to the font dicussion: the American Idiot font looks very much like the Uno, Dos, Tre one so I'll go and say MCR are the copycats

Heather. Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 this. I think it's the song below, not sure, can't hear that much similarities. Yes, this is what I was referring to. But I'm skeptical about Bowie getting any kind of credit on 21 Guns for this in the way that Sam Cooke did for Brutal Love. I hear more of that Bryan Adams Summer of 69 in JOS than I do with this.
Moriarty Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Bowie and Cooke aren't given "credit" in any kind of Green Day-related way, as they weren't with the band composing the music. Only on the "official" behind the scenes documents are they given credit (and royalties) just to keep the legal side of things happy. It is something that the band probably weren't aware of/apart of and it's more the legal team at the label decided on this to avoid any kind of lawsuit. It's no big deal and it happens way more often than you'd think.

Sam Cooke is credited equally with Billie for writing Brutal Love in the Tre album booklet, he deliberately and openly used parts of his song so I don't think it was just a legal thing. I think you're right in the case of 21 Guns though.

musso_kn Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Is it true that Chris Wolstenholme, Muse's bassist, thanks Mike Dirnt in the liner notes of one of their albums? What does he say?
