Anyone else yet to listen to new Green Day songs?

At first, when they were playing all the secret shows last year, I didn't want to hear too much of the new material. I had already ruined Kelly Clarkson's new album by listening to all of her 70 leaks (a lot) over the summer - then when her CD came out in October and I already knew most of the songs, the album just seemed less interesting and special than it should have. I was already tired of some of the songs; or at least no longer excited by them.

Because of that I wanted to steer clear of Green Day's new songs so the album(s) would be a surprise and it would be special. I heard a few of the songs (Amy, Carpe Diem, Stay The Night, etc) once but then not again. I really loved Oh Love, but I never allowed myself to listen beyond the first chorus, and I only let myself hear that first 90 seconds about 5 times, then I forced myself to stop. I was trying to keep everything a surprise!

But.... then their whole marketing plan came, and I had to listen to the official releases, right? So I listened Oh Love (so addicted to that song!), and then Let Yourself Go (which I was underwhelmed by, so I only heard it twice), then Kill The DJ a few times (love it)...

Then Billie got all evil and played snippets of a bunch of songs in the BBC interview, which I listened to only twice, but they're all stuck in my head. And now Nuclear Family & Stay The Night (GMA).

So I've been trying to not overdo it, but I've heard most of the songs at least once. I think I've done okay, though not as well as I'd planned, but I think the 3 albums will still be enough of a surprise. I've only listened enough to whet my appetite, but not totally fill me up.

Pretty much just like me, but I never listened to most of the recordings from that one show where they played all new stuff.

BUT once those CDs are out, they will be on repeat all the time!!

Same. o_o.

For 21st Century Breakdown (my first album release as a fan), I listened to all but 5 songs before the album, was released, which kinda spoiled it so I decided to take a slightly different approach this time. Off of Uno, I've only listened to the four released songs regularly (and Stay the Night). As for the rest of that album, I don't think I've heard anything else. As for Dos and Tre, I only know the little previews that were played on Radio 1 the other week, Lady Cobra and Nightlife being the ones I've listened to the most.

Oh and I've also listened to Carpe Diem a couple of times, but not too much.

This is off topic but omg your sig

OMG your sig .

The promotion for these albums is hell to go through without listening to any of the stuff. It's like, they're going to worm their way into your ears somehow... they're ready for the music to get the top blown off and they're stuck waiting...

That's so weird that you find that to be a requirement o_o. Even before I was into Green Day, I used to buy CDs only knowing one or two songs...

Me too. That's how I've learned to love a lot of different bands/singers - I knew maybe one or two songs by them, bought the album, and discovered that they have lots of other good songs! Then I look collect their other albums and look out for new music from them.

That's how I fell in love with Green Day. I knew 3 songs (AI, BOBD, H) and got the album, and now they're my favorite band. :)

It's fun getting a new CD and not knowing exactly what to expect! ... I've even bought CDs not knowing any songs by the artist and been pleasantly surprised.

Yeah that's how i fell in love with Green Day, too, but the first I bought was Dookie. Not sure if AI was out just yet... it was being promoted but not out yet. I really enjoyed it, and then I bought American Idiot... and it was alllll ovverrrrr.

I'm listening to a song right now from a CD that I bought without knowing any of its songs (though I had heard two from the band - The Shins) and I also bought one CD without knowing any songs from the band at all... I didn't relaly like it although... I guess I sort of did... But like I said, I didn't know any of their songs or what they sounded like, just heard the name...

All in all, I'm very happy with my decisions to buy things most of the time. Unfortunately the fact that just about everything is digital makes it very difficult to introduce myself to new music... I guess I'll have to go to a proper music store, and there aren't any in walking distance for me >_>.

Leaving much of the album to the unknown before I listen lets the experience be a completely new one. It's an experience I valued before I gave two shits about Green Day, where I would just sit down and listen to a new disc.. and now... I'm going to try and do it again. I know a few of the songs, obviously... but much of it is still going to be new.

I love being able to just sit down and listen to a new CD and take it all in. It's a really special experience, at least it always has been for me - it makes me really focus on the new music. I love that. Especially when it's (almost) all new and you don't know what to expect. It doesn't really work so well with the way things are so digital now. Putting a bunch of new songs into a playlist and listening on shuffle.... it doesn't give the same kind of impression.

I wish record storers still existed. It was fun to go in and browse all the different artists they had, bands I'd never heard of. It was exciting. I mean, I still find a lot of new music through the internet and radio, but usually that leaves me with more of an impression so I know what to expect more. Which can be good or bad. But it does take away some of the surprise. If there was a way to have the best of both worlds - the convenience of the internet and the reality (?) .... or dedication (? - not sure what word I'm looking for) of the record store - that would be ideal.

But yeah, I just love absorbing new music and understanding it as part of an album - the context, the overall vibe, etc. Hopefully I'll still be able to get that with the new trilogy... but this marketing is making me want to listen to it all as soon as they release it! I don't even know what to do, haha!

I've heard:

99 Revolutions

Kill The DJ

Let Yourself Go

Nuclear Family

Rusty James

Oh Love

Stay The Night

Troublemaker

I've heard all the snippets Billie Joe showed that radio guy a few weeks ago, too, if that counts.

I was gonna wait, but now I decided to listen to at least the singles.

I don't want my first listenings to be a live version unless I was there.

Today was my first time hearing Stay the Night, but I was there in person so I justified it, haha.

I usually like to wait for the whole album though :)

I've heard Ohh Love, Kill the DJ, Let Yourself Go and Nuclear Family. Ohh Love and Let Yourself Go are both singles on the radio here. I watched their performances and watched all the videos they put out recently.

I've heard all the songs from ¡Uno! except Loss of Control and Sweet 16

¡Dos!: Lady Cobra, Fuck Time, Wild One, Makeout Party, Amy, Drama Queen, Stop when the Red Lights Flash and a little of Nightlife (thanks to Billie's Iphone  )

¡Tré!: 99 Revolutions, Stray Heart, Amanda.

Kill The DJ

Nuclear Family

(the singles)

and i remember stray heart from red7 and mezzanine and all

I've listened to the snippets from Billie's iPod that went on in that interview, but apart from that, the full version I've heard are: Oh Love, Kill The DJ, Let Yourself Go, Stay the Night and Nuclear Family (which, surprisingly I've only played once, haha).

I'm trying (keyword here is trying) to leave it all until I have the album, because it'll just sound so much bigger and better as the sound quality will also be heaps better than the mp3 versions.

Yeah! I have listened 8th Avenue Serenade but I forgot to name it before!

Great song! I love it!

Yeah, I also heard 8th Avenue Serenade, Stray Heart, and Stop When The Red Lights Flash

I'm in the same boat as many of you. I listened to the soundcheck songs from a couple of years ago (Dreamcatcher, Stay the Night), and then some of the ones from the secret shows last year (Amy, Carpe Diem, It's Fuck Time, Goodbye to Romance, Last Gang in Town, Stray Heart, Sweet 16), but haven't done so since. I've also heard the official singles, but only on the day they premiered and never again. Obviously I couldn't help but hear a couple when I saw them in London, but the whole gig is such a blur that it's difficult to say they've spoilt anything, and besides - live recordings always feel so different to the studio ones anyway.

Other than that, nothing. No iPhone leaks from Billie on Radio 1, no TV appearances or live videos. I've even muted the little snippets they've included in things like the recent Youtube teaser for the tour. While the impact of Uno, especially, has been a bit dented by their relentless promoting of it this time, I think I've done pretty well to stay relatively unspoilt. It's so hard though... every day I come on here itching for news, and then I can't watch any of it  It does kinda make me feel like I can't join in, which is sad. That will doubly be the case when everyone is listening to the leak. Sometimes it's nice to all hear something together and talk about it - like with TV shows - but leaks have kinda put an end to that, and now it's like we're on two sides of the digital Berlin Wall

For all of September I've tried to not listen to any ¡UNO! songs. But I keep hearing Oh Love and sometimes Kill The DJ on the radio. And then Let Yourself go came out officially. And then Nuclear Family came out. I actually realized I have heard good quality audio (live or studio) for every song on ¡UNO! except Loss of Control and Sweet 16. I think I've listened to the songs too much, but never in any order. I don't wanna hear ¡UNO! all the way through until I get it on CD

i listened to a few recordings from the secret shows last year and the "official" song releases around the current marketing campaign for UNO...'to bad' billie spoiled everything at this radio interview with his iPod :DD and GD played 99 Revolutions live in MG,germany..so i got to hear this too ^^

I'm listening everything that came out so far. I just can't control myself

But I always buy the album anyway, so I think there's no problem listen the songs before they're officially released...

I've heard every song on Uno except for Loss of Control. Mostly it's live versions, but I've heard Oh Love, Kill The DJ, Let Yourself Go in their entirety - along with pieces of troublemaker and live versions of the rest. Dos and Tre, I've heard just live tracks and snippets. Tre has very few songs floated around but that will definitely change.....

Posted

I've only heard Oh Love and Kill The DJ, and the live recording of Let Yourself Go

I never listen to the shitty live videos or leaks. ruins the experience.

Posted

I´ve heard all that you can hear :D

Posted

If you haven't heard them, how can you say what it is more like? o_o.

all i'm saying is that I hope it's more of a sound like nimrod. I have no idea what it sounds like. But one week! Can't wait!

Well I've heard Oh Love, the live Let Yourself Go and the part of Kill the DJ that's a part of the SN intro, so yea. A bit, but not all. Oh and Fuck Time, but you know.

I forgot about Fuck Time. Damnit...that's 2 i've heard. So hard to not hear any songs.

I decided I would try to, but gave up. Now I excuse my failure with the fact that the leaks and early singles are part of their unplanned and supposedly unconventional marketing technique that I want to experience as well.

I couldn't rely on myself to keep myself hyped by not listening so now I rely on them to keep me hyped by fully committing to following their whole marketing strategy.

I'm going to try again to not listen for ¡Dos! and ¡Tre! since I haven't heard a lot of these songs at all.

Cool that you have managed to hold out on listening so far, hope you'll like it when it comes out :)

It is tough...but it's an experience for me. Green Day is the only band that I can do this with. They helped me a lot in high school...nimrod. saved me. I listen to Warning and I can go back to that exact moment when I listened to it. The feeling is amazing. But I guess not for everyone.
