adrocker Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 I think most people will find this boring but let's remember that Billie said Uno was the calm before the storm, so with that in mind, I'm expecting Uno's videos to be calmer before Dos' videos to be friggin exciting! I may be wrong but that is what I think. I love the vid btw :D
Killsometime Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 I like all the faces they made when they were walking on the dance floor.
Femme Gauche Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Will these do? Wow... Looking at the close-ups... Do you think they were purposefully made up (as in, makeup) to look "bland"? Their skin looks totally solid, as in, no texture or color at all... So, I realised last night in my usual 4am, insomnia fueled, genius-like state what my problem with the videos is (Oh Love and Kill The DJ)... There's this detachment. A coolness, both feigned attitude-wise and temperature/vibe wise. It's all greys and blues and cool tones. Cold. Green Day are detached. They're forced to act like rockstars. Inaccessible. There's all these borders and lines and separations between the band and everything else. Y'know the way generally someone is thought of as cool if they're all detached and don't give a shit. Yeah, well I never have much time for people like that. Sam Bayer is trying to make them seem like this when they're not at all. Just because Sam wants to be cool and is having a mid-life crisis (and seems to have been having one since birth!) doesn't mean he should project it on Green Day and their videos. It's not Green Day at all, these videos. All their previous videos were SO Green Day. You just fucking knew it was them, y'know?! Green Day are not, have never been and will never be cool, neither will their fans or liking them or anything got to do with them!! And that's fine! But Sam is trying to change this, make them cool. But they are warm, they're reds and oranges, passion, and friendliness. Goofiness. There are no lines and if there are they're certainly very blurred. It's all very messy. The fans and the band and all the craziness in between. It's literally like he's trying to fit a warm, squishy, comfy, fun circle into an angular, edgy, cool, detached square that's too small, floating away on hipster island. I dunno, I dunno, I'm not sure I'm making any sense. I actually like the videos! But it's not the same as the way I am with their others. I wouldn't casually google one to make me smile when I feel sick or sad. I might crack a smile but I wont be falling onto the floor laughing from my heart, or crying from it, or feeling particularly attached... So weirdly, maybe he's achieved that? The detachment? They seem detached, the video is detached and it makes me feel detached. It's just not me...and I don't think it's them. It's weird to think the guy who made American Idiot, the video that grabbed my attention like nothing before (or after), that turned my life upside-down... that he's also making these lacklustre, heartless cold videos for a band that are all about heart. ("Our passion is our strength") He doesn't get it, he just doesn't get it and it's a real shame. I'm under the impression he'll be making all the videos for UDT or at least Uno and honestly, I hope that's not the case and that they're not tied into it because he is not doing the right job for them. Not at all. I expected a departure with this era and I was fine with that. Experimentation is good, change is good, moving forward is good. But with the music videos, there's been a departure but where it's meant to be going, I don't know. I agree that it is cool and detached, but I don't think it has anything to do with trying to make them seem cool in a hip way. It has to do with being detached from the media and the madness of the world, and just not knowing what to do with all of the messages flying in their faces. It's not about trying to convey the band as being something "other" but rather that the world is something that is moving away from what they (or any "thinking", keen, observing person) can relate with.
A song for the lovers Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 I'm watching the video now at work for 10000 times but people here Interferes me. When I first saw the video, my reaction in motorcycles was "pffff" and when they enter in the club I was "watch out, we gotta badass over here" I'm a truly GD fan
Hermione Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Saw this on Scuzz last night . Not impressed with them showing the clean version at midnight though, they usually show explicit videos from 9pm onwards so what's that about?

bat-chen Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 I was sure its a parody by itself How they think they looks: How they really looks: *Please don't kill me!*
heart on a noose Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Just saw the video on TV for the first time.

Not at all. I expected a departure with this era and I was fine with that. Experimentation is good, change is good, moving forward is good. But with the music videos, there's been a departure but where it's meant to be going, I don't know. This is amazing and sums up the videos perfectly. I liked the Kill the DJ video, but I completely agree with you in the sense that they don't feel "Green Day" (espec. the Oh Love video!). These videos are lacking the thing that makes a Green Day video a Green Day video, whatever that may be. It's such a shame because I remember saying during 21stCB that the band should go back to Sam Bayer because I thought he would be able to bring back the creativity and uniqueness of a Green Day video. Hell, the American Idiot videos (sans WMUWSE) were damn near perfect, but more importantly, they just had that "Green Day feel" to them. The Kill the DJ video was better than the Oh Love by eons because for one thing, you actually get some kind of emotion from it. You get the idea that there's almost a hypothetical party that constantly going on, 24/7. There's constantly this voice, this thing just screaming at you to join the party - join the fun, no matter how out of control it gets, no matter what the costs. Sure, it looks fun enough, but there's a dark & dirty side to it that's hidden. By "Killing the DJ", you kill the party. You kill the music that's feeding this constant party. You kill the voices who are constantly telling to you to join the party, because there is no more party. I have no fucking clue what to make of the motorcycle thing other than they just look cool, but you know.
GreenDayisAmazing Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 I watch the video so many times at school yesterday!
Trina Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 So, I have to admit that at the time of my previous post I had only seen the video twice on a mobile phone screen and my mind was pretty pre-occupied while watching; I was upset about stuff and wasn't expecting the video, it just randomly popped up. Since then I've seen it on TV and I have to say it brought it up in my estimation. There's something about seeing something on TV that makes it better for me.. A sort of novelty and excitement that it's real and other people are seeing it right at that second too! Again, I like the video, I really do. I even like Oh Love's video! (Though not much! ) But I still stand by what I said. :\ (And I wish I didn't have to!!). They are good videos in certain ways but they're just not right, not at all, for this band. There's something with the pacing, editing and clean modernness of this video that also throws it for me. A little too staged and calculated. A little over-worked when it really shouldn't be. It's strange, I think the video could have been the exact same in the actual basis of it and shot in a different way and would have been a lot better. If it had a bit more of a natural flow...Maybe if the motorbike and club scenes were mixed a bit. Like start off with the bikes but not for so long and then go to club and shoot back to the bikes a few times to blend them together. Also there's an awkward clash of the band being goofy and laughable on the bikes with the serious sepia tone. The whole, walking into the club disapprovingly/people just dancing bit coulda been shortened. The animal costumes seem sorta lame. Get the fights and the blood going sooner and for longer. A bit more graphic maybe? Let the punches flow! I dunno, it's cool video but yeah, coulda been better. Feel the same with KYE. Editing is what let it down. I think most people will find this boring but let's remember that Billie said Uno was the calm before the storm, so with that in mind, I'm expecting Uno's videos to be calmer before Dos' videos to be friggin exciting! I may be wrong but that is what I think. For some reason I never really considered the videos past Uno!! This just made me feel real hopeful for the Dos videos. I also think it'll be my favorite out of the trilogy so really lookin' forward! Wow... Looking at the close-ups... Do you think they were purposefully made up (as in, makeup) to look "bland"? Their skin looks totally solid, as in, no texture or color at all... I agree that it is cool and detached, but I don't think it has anything to do with trying to make them seem cool in a hip way. It's not about trying to convey the band as being something "other" but rather that the world is something that is moving away from what they (or any "thinking", keen, observing person) can relate with. Nah, I think that's just film/tv make-up for you. They layer it on (often too much) 'cause the lighting's so harsh. I understand what you're saying but I think it's both, really. Yeah sure, the sole purpose of them looking detached isn't to just seem hip! But it's not just the band I'm talking about, also the general feel/vibe and boundaries, etc. Also I feel the video is detached from...the whole Green Day "thing" in itself, y'know? Whatever that may be.. Saw this on Scuzz last night . Not impressed with them showing the clean version at midnight though, they usually show explicit videos from 9pm onwards so what's that about? Ugh, I was NOT expecting it to be censored? I saw it on Kerrang in the early evening time and soon realised there was no blood. ._. Kerrang and particularly Scuzz always show gross, disturbing videos yet they feel the need to censor some fake blood?? ...Okay. I'd say it was just laziness or a mistake on Scuzz' part though at that time..Like they probably just put the clean version on the playlist by accident or only have that version/didn't realise there was two or something.. MTV is showing the proper version, at least. I have no fucking clue what to make of the motorcycle thing other than they just look cool, but you know. Oh gosh, thanks. I was just sort of incoherently rambling but I think all us big fans have our finger on the pulse of GD more than any director could, I suppose. It's weird, right? Because literally all their other videos (to me) have that Green Day feel (to varying degrees, yes, but even the awful WMUWSE and JOS have it and I fucking hate them! ). I just think their amazing energy and special quality are not coming across enough. It's like it's being muted or silenced or something. I was worried when I heard Sam was back tbh even though I think AI, BOBD, Holiday and BIAB are perfection. I wonder if they will stick with him for all the videos.. Yeah, I think Billie Joe saves it a bit by acting a bit demented and split personalitied. Gives it a tiny bit more depth. Haha, and yeah, motorbikes are def just for the coolness factor.

But if MTV's showing the proper version that must not be the case, good. Probably was just a mistake then.
Nzap Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 I dunno, I don't think non-band members singing would've fit, and I think if the band had been singing during the non-performance parts, the vibe would have been lost. Well obviously I meant to cut to the part where the band is singing the song in the club. Not the dancers. I.e, I meant that I think it would be better cutting to parts where the band is singing in the club once a while instead of just showing them riding on the motorcycles while the song is in the background.
Idiotic Tendency... Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Just got this in the mail today Another Jason White credit. Loving the artwork on the back too. Where did you get it?
Sanity Loan Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Another Jason White credit. Loving the artwork on the back too. Where did you get it? I got it off eBay. It's a radio promo
Idiotic Tendency... Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 I got it off eBay. It's a radio promo Ah, OK. All the ebay results I get for this a still bidding. I have Oh Love and want this too.
Femme Gauche Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 Well obviously I meant to cut to the part where the band is singing the song in the club. Not the dancers. I.e, I meant that I think it would be better cutting to parts where the band is singing in the club once a while instead of just showing them riding on the motorcycles while the song is in the background. The part where the band is playing in the club seems to fit better toward the end, where they sort of start to contribute to or rebel against the rest of what's going on.
