So judging from the reactions about Nightlife...

Operation Ivy

Oh, I've seen them as "OpIvy" but never "OPIV" before; just threw me off xD.

The sound is a little more angry/tough than Green Day's has ever been. Where Green Day is angry-sounding, it is snotty-sounding, just by virtue of Billie Joe's voice and personality. Would be a totally different dynamic.

Green Day can be really angry at times -> Nimrod's "Take Back" and "Platypus".

But I agree with you on the voice. Thats also the reason why they couldn't emulate Rancid. Billie Joe is clearly the better singer, but Tim Armstrongs voice is unique (as is Billies, but i guess you get what i want to say).

By the way, Operation Ivy is one of the greatest bands that ever existed. Jesse Micheals (singer of OPIV) is genius and a man with great values.

Hmm haven't listened to them in awhile actually; bought the CD ages ago but I've only listened a few times....

But yes Billie's voice and Tim Armstrong's are very, very different so they can't really do the same things, even if it is the same song it's going to come out sounding very different.

nightlife is a good song, I don't hate it, but that isn't the type of music I gravitate towards.. So I suppose if they went this direction I probably wouldn't care for it.

Anyone on here listen to the Transplants? I've never been into hip-hop, but it's a hip-hop/punk fusion and it's amazing. They have two albums and both of them are EPIC. I think Green Day does amazing at whatever genre they tackle. I have enough faith in them that they could do a country album and it be good.

I really doubt this would ever happen, but if it were to occur, it would have to be something that they evolve into over time. Kind of like how, today, I'd be really comfortable hearing news that Billie Joe Armstrong is releasing a solo acoustic album of love songs... I wouldn't worry about it being total crap. But if that news had come out in 1995, shit, the world would be like "WTF, that is going to SUCK!" After Good Riddance, people believed he could write an acoustic song, but it still took me until the last few years and all those acoustic encores to think "Wow, it would be nice if he did more of this on his own, maybe aside from Green Day." But that was an evolution over time, and although he might have been capable of a lot of acoustic ballads when he was younger, it's obviously something he's honed over the years. I think the same would have to happen for us as fans to happily accept or look forward to a rap/hip-hop rock album from them---it couldn't just be based on Nightlife, they would have to demonstrate a trend towards those kinds of songs, successfully, over the course of the next few albums, and by then it would be a NATURAL next step. I don't think it'd be wise to just jump into it, unless some bizarre hip hop inspiration overcomes Billie Joe's body. So I'd be happy for this to happen if it ever made sense for the band.

I'd give it a listen, but I probably wouldn't like it. So I probably would never listen to it again. But I'd keep listening to the old stuff and going to shows etc

People are complaining that Green Day are going too far out of their usual stuff e.g. Nightlife, but then some complain that it sounds too much like themselves. No one can win :D

Oh my God you people need to get this through your head.

There's a difference between a similar sound, and having similar aspects to a song.

A sound is a vibe. You can tell what band is playing whatever song just by the sound of it.

Having similarities is completely different. I'll give you an example.

Say soda is a vibe. All sodas share the same vibe, you know it's a soda.

Now 7 Up and Sprite taste similar, they have more in common with each other beyond just being a soda.

They share very specific characteristics. These characteristics when it comes to songs would be things like guitar riffs and melodies.

I've listened to dozens of other bands and artists, and no other band/artist that I've listen to share similar aspects and melodies with their songs as much as Green Day. They even use stuff that sounds very similar to other band's.

Listen to Warning, then listen to The Kinks Picture Book. The guitar, bass, drums, they all sound almost identical.

There IS a difference.

No. If they went in that direction I simply wouldn't be able to call myself a fan anymore. I just heard Nightlife for the first time tonight, and it was bad enough. Not a bad song in general, exactly, and not as horrible as I expected, but a really bad song for Green Day.

So, yeah, if they went in that direction I'd pretty much

A) Want to kill myself.

and

B) Want to kill them.

and

C) Immediately disown them.

I think most people get that, except not all of them think it's a bad thing. Many bands do this a lot more than Green Day. I'm not thinking about the song that it sounds like while listening, and even if it's apparent, it just doesn't ruin the song for me. I just don't listen to music like that.

...what the fuck is wrong with you?

Probably the fact that I'm a srs bsns fan, not an apparently new and casual fan like yourself. I'd never be comfortable with such radical changes in a band that holds this much meaning to me ... And, let's face it, the majority of rap/R&B holds very little meaning whatsoever to anyone.

lol you've said that same thing so many times throughout these past few days that I'm quite sure most people already got your point.

It would be my first and strongest emotion, at any rate. I really wouldn't be able to take them seriously anymore if made such a complete music overhaul ...

Like I said, Nightlife was bad enough. I've actually lost some respect for Green Day because of this song, and because of some of the recent choices they've made with advetising and music video content and etcetera, so this fact is an extremely difficult pill to swallow. I've always thought they could do no wrong in my eyes, so I'm still kinda in shock ... And it's not a good feeling.

Oh God...you're one of THOSE people...

There's something wrong with you if you feel the need to say that you'd kill yourself, and the band just because you fear the direction that the band could only THEORETICALLY turn. Also, Rap and R&B hold A LOT meaning, just as much as Rock and if you say otherwise then you're just a very, very, very ignorant person. And to say it doesn't hold any meaning to ANYONE?

Holy shit, I thought people as musically ignorant as you only existed in stories...and the YouTube comment section.

Evidently they don't. Or refuse to believe it.

Way to prove you're a newbie, there, lil' fella.

Look, everyone, it's yet another new GDC member who's unable to grasp the concept of my sarcasm, dry humour, and ironic textual tones and who breezes over key words and phrases in my posts! Ugh, new era members, man ... Pomegrante and her ~**~tilde && asterik~~**~ loving crew was bad enough.

If you're trying to sarcastically insult me then you're doing a very poor job at it.

And what you said isn't even funny, what's funny about saying a music genre is shit and that you're going to kill yourself and the band?

Sarcasm is actually very easy to do on the Internet, just include 2 letters at the end. J and K.

I've actually lost some respect for Green Day because of this song

It's just a song. I don't understand all these fans trying to stop Green Day from experimenting with different types of music and being creative. It's kinda selfish tbh.

If they release Nightlife as a single then there will probably receive 2 different strong reactions. Either people will say they sold out..again (most likely to happen) or people will be very surprised and Green Day will gain a lot of respect for have done a very drastic departure musically.

I don't like it. This worries me. Out of 4 songs I've heard from any of the albums I really only like one. Two are just ok and this one is ugh.

There's a difference between having an opinion and condemning an entire music genre and saying people don't really care about said music genre. And Nicholas Cage needs to trim his eyebrows, he has a unibrow thing going on there. He looks like Count Olaf. I'll give you a high five if you get the reference.

oh god

Dude, go re-read my post. Look carefully for key phrases and words. In this instance, I urge you to seek out the word 'majority'. When you're done with that, come back with a five page apology written in the style of Shakespeare with a touch of Russell Peters and I'll consider forgiving you.

The first time I heard this song my whole brain went "what the hell?!"

I just don't like it. I don't like the lyrics and I don't like the music. I don't think I'm able to tell if it's more Rap or Hip Hop, the only thing I can tell is that this is surely something Green Day have never done before, and in my opinion they should never do it again. The parts Billie sings sound boring while the parts the girl sings sound quite good, she's got a nice voice, but the lyrics.. To me this song sounds like The Network duetting with the Foxboro Hot Tubs, and this is no good.
