Ryan Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I absolutely love Foxboro Hot Tubs! I love their sound, but although they were just a product of a drunk night, a lot of their songs are better than Green Day's new material. Funny you picked Let Yourself Go as an example, because it's actually the only one of the new songs that I really like. Sure, the lyrics aren't deep and meaningful either, but they fit perfectly to the general idea of the song, so it doesn't matter. But Kill the DJ for example has a great melody, it's really catchy. I just wish they could have come up with something better than "Someone kill the DJ, shoot the fucking DJ, someone kill the DJ, shoot the fucking DJ...." as a chorus. But maybe you're right and we will find some more great lyrics in some of the songs. I just wish they'd be more obvious. When I heard 21st CB for the first time, there were dozens of lines that stood out immediately, same with American Idiot and also their older albums. That's what I miss. The majority of their new songs have the strong lyrics in the verses. The choruses are just fun and catchy. I think that Kill the DJ has some incredible lyrics in the verses. The chorus is what it is, but that's not meant to be the strength of the song. Funny thing is that that basic chorus is what I walk around singing. :-P

Whenever I listen to Kill the DJ, it's stuck in my head for hours, but that doesn't automatically make it a good song. It's not bad either, because the melody is great, but I just think that all the repeats and the more or less meaningless chorus are a bit annoying.

I think the Christian soldiers mind control line is awesome. I love the "We are the vultures..." section right after the chorus as well. But I don't want to start talking about other songs in the Troublemaker thread...Matt will warn me. Haha

AndrewW91 Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I've listened to the preview about 11 times. I really dig it! I fucking love your avatar! It makes me giggle everytime I see it.

THIS is the way that I'm feeling the new songs from ¡Uno! Songs from ¡Dos! or ¡Tré! doesn't suffer so hard of this issue.

Femme Gauche Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Hmm... I think Billie is getting looser with his lyricism, letting go of some of his more formal structures of the past. And just saying "fuck it - let's have fun with the music". It isn't as if the songs are about nothing - they definitely are filled with passion and fire and importance - but I am guessing he is probably just trying to 'let go' after the depth and breadth of some of his lyrics on 21CB. As for the clip.. from what I heard, I thought it was really interesting, and I really enjoyed it. I'm so glad they had so much fun making these records - it comes off in the music and I totally feel it.
Todd Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 ..it's not an opinion that a lot of this stuff sounds similar. It's a fact. The only way you can't notice it is if you refuse to. or you don't notice it. Cause i didnt notice the similarities to PH, AtT, or H&H

Yes! That's exactly what I see in these new songs, it's not a bad thing, it really isn't! It's just not what we are used to.
Femme Gauche Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 And the thing is - that's what I always have loved about him. The layeredness of his writing. And the fact is, most of their songs - all but a few (like, for instance, Platypus) - are not entirely clear upon first listen. Or second, or third... It takes a lot of thinking to really string together the thoughts, but they are definitely present. Just look at the way he talks... he interrupts himself, he says things out of order at times, etc... And he changes what he is saying, that is, he changes the words he uses, halfway through a sentence... his lyrics reflect that same kind of process of thought.
Hermione Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 This thread is for discussing the preview of Troublemaker, so if what you have to say doesn't relate to Troublemaker in some way don't post it here. If you wanna talk about the new albums in general head to the Trilogy thread.
sara_gd Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I agree that he's getting lazy with lyrics and I don't like that. Before all these songs and previews I feared that I would only get a few lines off the albums that I thought that were really good lyrics, and now I think that's what's going to happen even more. Remember when Billie said that what motivated him when writing was thinking that he still hadn't wrote his best lyrics? Well, he's not going any better with this for sure. But anyway, I think it's just a phase they need to go through, so I'm not mad at them or anything. I quite like the song actually It reminded me of this:
Femme Gauche Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I love most of his lyrics... A lot of them don't seem to make sense sometimes. But then, when I think about it, they make more sense... The feeling is always clear at first, but not the specifics. I think he is great at sound byte lyrics. One liners that hit hard. Those are what tend ot get me going. And I don't think that what I have heard so far is in any way short on those. This song certainly included in that.
Femme Gauche Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Yeah, seems like it is easy to look at each of the new songs and say "sounds like xxxxx" but every time, it is a little bit different... It sounds like Nimrod, but with cues they learned in doing the Foxboro Hot Tubs. Am I the only one who thinks the name is problematic because I might mix it up in my mind with Weezer's song of the same name?
Bastard of 1967 Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Very Network-inspired. Reserving judgment til I hear the whole thing. I'm not really crazy about it right now, but neither was I crazy about Oh Love and Kill the DJ when those first dropped, and now I'm head over heels in love with Oh Love, and even Kill the DJ isn't turning out to be too shabby. Band's transforming again, kids, give it time.....
DarrenDookie Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Am I the only one who thinks the name is problematic because I might mix it up in my mind with Weezer's song of the same name? Well the songs don't sound the same and are by 2 completely different bands, i'm sure your mind will be able to comprehend two different songs with the same name
Femme Gauche Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I know, I know. But the name of a song alone can get it looping in my head ! I really like it, though. It does definitely sound Network-ish. Side Project Assimilation to Main Band, confirmed. @Bastard of 1967 Indeed they are! I can only hope that people who are lukewarm and/or downright cold on it now will warm up to it... But I think it is epic that they are capable of producing this kind of internal controversy with every new album, by simple virtue of following their own path.
Jack [DF] Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Lyrics are meh, apathetic delivery is clearly feigned, melodies are forced. Why do I like this so much?
OldWhatsHisFace Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 It's okay, I love it, but I still think Kill The DJ is better :L I hope that isn't the full song!
alaniluau Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 We had Peacemaker three years ago, and on the very next album we get Troublemaker. What happened, Billie?
Femme Gauche Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Haha, the Peacemaker in the song is probably more dangerous than this Troublemaker <3.
amy_runs Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 We had Peacemaker three years ago, and on the very next album we get Troublemaker. What happened, Billie? 21CB was three years ago....... that's so weird to me
