Eldoon Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I happen to be in the school of loving "Christian's Inferno" and I know that's not the largest school in the world but to call that song "raw" is just patently false. That song is if anything, over-produced. Raw is being natural and basic and I concur with CP that it's one of their most raw songs since the 90s in the current form we've heard. That said, you might be right, it's quite possible that a studio version will make it less raw but either way, it's a great fucking song. I suppose I meant "raw" in a more esoteric fashion, so thanks for calling me out on that. You're right -- production-wise, Christian's Inferno is much more belabored than the current incarnation of Let Yourself Go (and probably the studio version, for that matter.) The "rawness" I was referencing was more towards a pure songwriting sense, which might've not been what CP was going for, I admit. I just can't shake this feeling of LYG being a little rote, and that kind of bums me out. That's part and parcel what perplexes me about the hugely positive reaction Let Yourself Go has received. I think the live video really showcases how strong GD still are as a band (it is nothing if not an incredibly tight performance,) but I also think that the studio version of Let Yourself Go will give me a better appreciation for the song itself. Does that make sense?
Ritz Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Totally in love with it. but I still think Oh Love was a good choice as the first single. if they release this as a single it won't get much airplay cos of the swear words

DannyDirnt Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 If they censor Let Yourself Go, they should then censor most of the songs that get air play because they are so bad that they hurt that they are offensive. What I like is that they really got to make much more relatable songs. I'm really loving what they are doing this time. Let Yourself Go is already one of my fav songs from Green Day. I just can't wait to see all they'll bring, because I already know Fuck Time and Stray Heart are gonna be in my favs as well.
Red Ranger Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I think Let yourself go is better than Oh Love. And I love it! The lyrics is in my head and i just continue to sing "Shut your mouth 'cause you're talking too much and I don't give a fuck any way. Let yourself go, let yourself go, let yourself go..." It's so fucking epic!
Trina Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I edited the lyrics posted on GDA 'cause I'm hearing some of it differently. What do you guys think? Shut your mouth 'cause you're talking too much And I don't give a fuck anyway You always seem to be stuck in this shit And all you really do is complain You should all tell them how you lie Small minds tend to think alike Shut your mouth 'cause you're talking too much And I don't give a fuck anyway Let yourself go (x12) Gotta let it go, gotta let it go (x2) Cut the crap 'cause you're screaming in my ear And you're taking up all of my space You're over-feeding my patience again And I'd rather get punched in the face You're getting on my every last nerve Everything you've said I've already heard I'm sick to death of your every last breath And I don't give a fuck anyway Let yourself go (x12) Gotta let it go, gotta let it go (x4) Everyone is fuckin' with my head now Don't stop fuckin' with my head now You're fuckin' with my fuckin' head now You're the very thing I, very thing I, very thing I.. Let yourself go (x24)
Nemo. Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Totally in love with it. but I still think Oh Love was a good choice as the first single. if they release this as a single it won't get much airplay cos of the swear words i complain after i listened to Uno but in my opinion oh love wasn't a good choice. it's a catchy song for sure but it doesn't sound good on the radio especially the beginning. When i listen to oh love on the radio it sounds good but it doesn't blow me away. LYG would have been a better choice because it blows me away, the song is fast and catchy and after listening that song my mouth was wide open and i only could say WOW, THAT'S IT. And LYG is a song that the radio stations all over the world need!
Malleus Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I just woke up and I laughed way too fucking hard at this. That dude is a true fan. Anyway, you guys were right about the censoring stuff, my head's been up my ass lately or something because it seems my thoughts are only half-forming. I still would prefer the song uncensored and not a single though. As for it's transition to studio, I think it won't lose most if any of it's edge or raw power because to me a lot of what makes it so potent is the fact that we're coming from 21st CB to songs like this. Just the fact that they're putting out a song like this at this stage proves the intensity and dedication from the guys just to make good music and not to worry about anything, which adds a very "raw" element that isn't there with songs like Christian's Inferno. Also from what we've heard so far overproduction does not seem to be a problem.
PanicAttack! Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 It sounds like something straight out of Dookie, if Dookie had been written with 25 years of musical experience. The energy of the chorus and the drone-like groove of the verse reminds me of She, on speed. The hateful, yet humourous lyrics addressing some selfcentered moron, reminds me mostly of F.O.D, yet i would also mention In The End and Chump. The sudden breakdown somehow reminds me of the one in Welcome To Paradise Ofc the solo is more like a mix of American Idiot (the song) and something out of 39/Smooth, just like in Oh Love! Overall, i would give it 8/10, in Green Day standard (which is basically a natural 10/10 everytime, compared to anything else), because it's fucking good. But for a 10/10 i would need something completely groundbreaking (new and different) and fucking genius both in music and lyrics!

And it's something I can barely say.
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I agree, Stay The Night would have been the best first single for Uno. Also the best single for Green Day ever because that song is fucking amazing but that's a different story. I don't know about the best single ever, but it's definitely the single I'm waiting for right now. It's gonna happen...
DannyDirnt Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I think the best way to start promoting an album is choosing an energic, fast paced first single
1039SweetChildren Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I think the best way to start promoting an album is choosing an energic, fast paced first single Actually, the most strategic way to pick a first single is to select a song some people wouldn't expect to hear and hope to get their interest. You also want to leave them curious for more and not throw all your eggs in one basket by releasing the best song right away. Fans will buy the album that is being promoted regardless, so it's about extending the appeal to others.
petros Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I think the best way to start promoting an album is choosing an energic, fast paced first single It's not like anybody thought that Green Day wouldn't have songs like Let Yourself Go in the records. So I think it was an interesting choice to pick Oh Love...
Alan86 Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I think part of the reason they choose a less energetic first single is because they have never released 2 singles before and album has been out before. Normally it is just one single about a month before the album comes out. Thats what makes me think "Kill the DJ" will be there main song for promoting the album.

Let yourself go (x24) I don't hear all of that exactly, but I think the line you got as "You should all tell them how you lie" is partly right - I hear "hitch a ride, tell them how you lied" And I agree that it's "taking up all of my space" rather than "talking up". I guess we'll get the official lyrics soon anyway
Joey Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Wehay, a good song. Reminds me of Lights Out, which was better than 90% of the last album. If there are a dozen tracks like this in the next three albums I'll be happy.
~ Walking Contradiction Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Their youtube channel just uploaded the video!
No Rhyme Or Reason Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 So I gave it a couple days, and I came to this conclusion: Let Yourself Go, for me, is like the Static Age of the last album. Or like the Christie Road of Kerplunk - something like that. It's one of those songs that almost everyone else loves and cites as a favorite on the CD, but which I think is mediocre and boring, and ultimately one of the least inspired, worst songs on the album. I originally thought of it as the Know Your Enemy of the album, but everyone actually likes it, so the Static Age/Christie Road comparisons work better. I still think LYG is too predictable and similar to their older stuff... not because I don't like that sound, but because I'm more interested in lots of variety and hearing how much Green Day can evolve and experiment. So while it's a good song, I feel like it's nothing special, for now or compared to their older material. I'm glad it wasn't the first song I heard from the trilogy, because it would have had the same effect on me as KYE did (make me less excited, even worried, about the album). But I'm glad you all like it Just not happy about all the unnecessary Oh Love hating. (I still think that's the best song ever ♥)
Bastard of 1967 Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Angeline really got the essence of this one, again. -- it's a jackhammer that grabs you by the throat from the first chord. It's everything that Christian's Inferno shot for but failed at b/c of its confounding lyrics and overproduction. And that choral hook, Mike's harmonies, HUGE bass line....wow. You can't compare it fairly to Oh Love. Two totally different songs, styles, and messages. But just look at the variety the trilogy is setting itself up to be! In the studio, watch for the live feel. According to the most recent interview with Rob Cavallo, we now know that the band was all together in the studio simultaneously, that the trilogy wasn't recorded in discrete individual separate sessions where each musician laid down solo tracks isolated from each other. They're going for a studio album that still has a live feel to it. Can't. Fucking. Wait.
DannyDirnt Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I actually liked LYG quite a lot more than Oh Love. My prediction is Oh Love will be the typical song they play in the acoustic part, only Billie Joe. Mike's harmoniesYES! Loved the armonies in this one!
No Rhyme Or Reason Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 My prediction is Oh Love will be the typical song they play in the acoustic part, only Billie Joe. No, because it needs the buildup - gotta have the rest of the band for that! But I do love Billie's acoustic sets. I love acoustic.
DannyDirnt Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 No, because it needs the buildup - gotta have the rest of the band for that! But I do love Billie's acoustic sets. I love acoustic. Yeah, also WMUWSE needed it and it got lots of times performed acoustic. And Good Riddance needed the violins. And Christie Road needed all the instruments. And Blood Sex & Booze.
