Iminyourcoffeemaker Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 You know, it's like thrust-butt. It's a term we use on the podcast to talk about songs that are kick ass. The kind that make you want to get up and dance around like an idiot to Like...an airplane speeding away?
greendepent Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 The Beatles and Radiohead both managed it. Then again they are the two greatest bands of all time. It seems like people are afraid of acknowledging that Green Day rehash some stuff, but to me it's simple, a band hugely influenced by The Ramones isn't necessarily going to prioritise creating something 100% original and distinctive every time, over keeping it simple and catchy. You can't compare Beatles or Radiohead with Green Day. Beatles makes music when, almost there is not music. Radiohead just creates music from very weird modes, since they feel bad when they copy to The Hollies. Anyway, they don't make the kind of music that Green Day does. Or try to do. Don't expect Green Day being "original". Too many bands with the same style today. They just have some fuck fun themselves
blitzkriegdeb Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 If they started releasing songs like "Avenue of Shattered Wishes", "St. Jamie", and "Basket Container" then I'd be concerned about them running out of ideas. They've been around for 20+ years at this point, people are always going to find similarities to one of their other songs. The thing is that, even if they do sound the same, the band finds a way to improve upon it so it still sounds fresh. Hell, The Ramones built a whole career out of rehashing old song melodies for new songs.
Heather. LOL Avenue of Shattered Wishes sounds like it'd be a great song Basket Container... not so much, though it'd make a good Tre Cool sexual position song.
WestboundSign! Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 I don't mind if there are a some similarities between Green Day songs. For me, every new song they release is a new song. It's never the same, there's always something super fresh and different that makes the song differ from everything they've released before. You can't expect a band like Green Day, which has already released a ton of songs, to write hundreds of songs in which not even a few notes are similar to another one. I actually think these similarities are normal..
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 This song sounds so much like Too Much Too Soon. (that's an original comment for ya) Which I don't mind at all because that's one of my favourite songs
DannyDirnt Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 I saw it on YouTube. Had to wait for a few mins because I wifi is shitty right now. I liked it, but I wasn't really impressed yet.
drugstore hooligan Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 I don't think its as similar to too much too soon as people are saying. I really like it. Can't wait to hear the full thing.
Hermione Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 I enjoyed the clip! Didn't make me think of Too Much Too Soon, I guess there's a similarity now that it's pointed out but I wouldn't have noticed otherwise. Fitting that it has a similarity to an AI b-side if it's on the "epic" album. I'm intrigued to hear the rest of the song.
Heather. Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 Just saw this on tumblr. I don't know how this contributes to the whole Jason White conversation
21stcenturyidiot Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 I don't think Jason writes the songs, just plays em
M1KEY Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Dude...Anchorman is one of the funniest movies ever made. And "Somebody Told Me" is the best song by The Killers but I still hate Brandon Flowers.
Iminyourcoffeemaker Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 And "Somebody Told Me" is the best song by The Killers but I still hate Brandon Flowers. Mr. Brightside is the best Killers song. Hands down. I am a diehard Killers fan too. I still think that is the best song they ever made.
Reject-All-American Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Just saw this today and it was awesomeee, basically sat in the theater a little too long listening to it great song, I approve...of course. Hurry up Uno, come out already.
Insomniac1984 Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 It sounds good. I feel a vibe from something from Warning era I think. I don't get it when people says it kind of similar to Too much too soon.
Blond-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 The vocal melody is really similar.
Clayish Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Who fucking cares if it sounds like "Surrender" from Cheap Trick or like "Too Much Too Soon"? Honestly. Those are both pump-ass songs. Why would you want a rehash of those songs?
alienlifeform Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 i had never understood why people always have to research for some similar song right after a new song its released... sometimes is like people just couldn't enjoy a good new song... stop complaining... it's impossible nowadays to find a total original song...you will always find something similar.. even more talking about punk-ish songs
Todd Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 i had never understood why people always have to research for some similar song right after a new song its released... sometimes is like people just couldn't enjoy a good new song... stop complaining... it's impossible nowadays to find a total original song...you will always find something similar.. even more talking about punk-ish songs Yes. I agree. You wont hear me complaining about new songs.
Dalya Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 99 Revolutions is pretty catchy... I don't know why people complain it sounds like "Too Much Too Soon". In fact, even though it is a b-side track, it sounds better than some songs from AI and 21CB altogether.. the same thing I could say about Shoplifter! If it is a b-side track, it doesn't mean it is worse!
Clayish Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 it's impossible nowadays to find a total original song so false.
Blond-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 i had never understood why people always have to research for some similar song right after a new song its released... sometimes is like people just couldn't enjoy a good new song... stop complaining... it's impossible nowadays to find a total original song...you will always find something similar.. even more talking about punk-ish songs This is absolute nonsense. People hear a song and it immediately reminds of them of another song. Green Day fans, who know Green Day songs inside out, will recognise even faster that it sounds like another Green Day song. What the hell do you mean by "research"? Also it is quite obviously not impossible to find a totally original song, you need to listen to more music if you honestly think that is the case and are not simply using it to brush off the legitimate claim that a fair number of these songs sound very similar to earlier songs. Complaints are as legitimate as "I can't wait for these songs" comments, imagine someone came on and said "don't look forward to this album" or "don't give the new songs endless and undying praise". It would be ridiculous wouldn't it? So why can't the people with concerns voice them?

Maybe Its cause I pay more attention to the lyrics than the guitar, or maybe some people just have better hearing than I do.

gnash Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Just going to throw my two cents out there regarding the whole 'this song sounds like that song' topic... Yes, some Green Day songs sound like some other Green Day songs. Instead of viewing it as 'ripping themselves off', maybe it would be more productive to see it as trying to improve on existing work? There's a criminally underrated band I follow whose lead singer also does his own solo stuff, and he/they are constantly re-using lyrics and melodies to improve on existing work. They do tend to release practically everything they record to their core fanbase (including a massive amount of demos, which are largely where my point comes from - the 'final products' of this rewriting tend to be far better than the earlier attempts) which I suppose is where it differs from Green Day who are re-working songs already released internationally. But at the end of the day, Green Day is not complicated music. What makes them so great is their ability to match well written lyrics (particularly from the AI/21CBD eras) to straightforward music, hence making the good lyrics easily accessible. And really, I don't mind if some of it sounds familiar. Perhaps because of the inevitable limited amount of combinations for chords etc in this type of music, I actually think it's quite fun when I hear something that seems familiar. It's not *quite* the same thing, but close enough to add it to the conversation - I'll quickly mention The Gaslight Anthem, particularly their album The 59 Sound. While an original work, this name-drops old artists, inserts old song titles into the lyrics and even once or twice uses a full line or two from an old song by another artist, with the same melody. This is done as a tribute/show of respect to the original artist and it really adds something to the atmosphere of the song rather than feeling like a ripoff. Above all, this new Green Day era seems to be about having fun, and if that means putting a little less thought into what they're doing, I don't really have a problem with that. I was quite looking forward to an intense, intellectual, elaborate album to follow up 21CB and it seems that's quite a long way from what's happening, but it seems like a laugh and they're putting out music that's catchy and fun, which will do fine for me...
