Saying a song is a "fucking amazing pieces of art" sounds very fanboyish to me. That's hyperbolic as hell.

Sucks to be you then. I'd much rather be the guy who loves good music, not the guy who criticizes people for it.

Just got back from the movie(pretty bad), but the song? It's decent.

This honestly sounds like a throwaway track, Billie probably wrote this in 5 minutes, recorded in 20 minutes.

Haven't heard the whole song obviously, but this sounds like a B-Side... Hype died a bit, whats with these lame choruses?

I know it doesn't automatically make it a "fucking amazing piece of art" - but in my opinion they are, I'm absolutely happy in every way with what I've heard so far :) I'd like to see anyone who has an issue with these similarities keep a band going for over 20 years putting out hugely successful albums throughout that time keeping every single song entirely original.

Everyone has opinions about the songs, that's a given, sometimes it's better just to focus on the positives and not the negatives :) Enjoy it for what it is :)

And all I'm trying to do is tip the scales so that this doesn't sound like a Justin Bieber fansite. Because otherwise without commentators like me it would. "Billie, Mike and Tre are sooo hawt!" "Green Day are the greatest band ever!" "I cried when I first heard___." (those sort of sentences to me just make people sound overly dramatic). Sure I'm the minority, but that just means my voice will stand out.

99 revolutions Sounds Pretty Good

Sounds like Surrender, but probably is the best track of all the trilogy.

The end of the song is just awesome. 99 to 1! :D

I do love music, but that was a very hyperbolic statement. Like when people saying something is the greatest thing ever.

It makes you sound like a generic squeamish fan. And I gave the reason why I'm criticizing them. Because no one else wants to do the dirty work.

It's almost like he comes up with the name of the song, then uses the name of the song as the chorus.

I don't know why critics have hyped it up and mentioned it so much, maybe it has more to do with the lyrical content than the actual music itself.

It's just something I'm passionate about, I can't help that. Generic squeamishness aside, the band and the music mean a lot to me.

Believe me, I feel the same way about stuff like that. I really hate seeing comments like that instead of serious discussion about the music, so in that respect I'm totally with you there. I'd much rather be part of a community that can be objective about stuff instead of being brainwashed fanboys/girls.

I'm only stating my opinion, as an opinion, not a fact. I just don't think the similarities are huge deals, the songs are still new songs and should be looked at that way :)

I've heard all of their albums too and I REALLY don't get these similarities. I swear I don't hear the similarities in the new stuff to the likes of Maria, Suffocate and I don't hear In the End in Tight Wad hill

Suffocate- Chorus: "Suffocate, suffocate, suffocate" Carpe Diem-Pre-Chorus: "Ain't it strange"(x2)

Both the intros of Let Yourself Go and Maria sound similar because of the Da Da Da, and the palm muted back up guitar.

The end of Sweet 16's chorus sounds exactly like the "Perfect picture of bad health, another notch scratched on my belt/The future just ain't what it used to be" part of Uptight. If you don't hear these similarities then you must refuse to believe that they're there.

Lol who cares what you sound like? Since when was it wrong to have a favorite of something? That's basically what saying something is the greatest thing ever means.

And I respect your opinion, I never said I didn't like these songs, I do, I really do, it's just that these things kind of irk me a little. Especially since we've waited so long since the last album.

I totally get that, no offence intended in my earlier posts. I guess as long as it's not enough to make you dislike the songs and you can still get enjoyment out of them it's not too bad :)

oh okay, that's pretty annoying. i hate that too,

Billie already said he wrote it in 5 minutes :P

With Know Your Enemy, you could tell.

wow I actually didn't know that. it really sounds like it too.

Maybe they need more time for creating a mind-blowing record like AI? I think it was too fast to put out 3 albums in 3 years...

Like I said, they could have made an album that was a compilation of the best songs from each album, then it would be mind-blowing.

They most likely have the songs to do so, but they could possibly be marred by a lot of decent or "meh" songs by going the trilogy route.

Um, Mr "WrongWayToSalvation," with all due respect, there seems to be something you are not considering, which is what your vitriol about songs sounding the same stems from. You see, most melodies are made from just a few notes. Most pop melodies are based on the major scale which is only 7 notes (8 really, but the first and last notes are octaves). And most melodies do not use all the notes from the major scale of whatever key the song is in. There are not infinite amounts of melodies you can make when you are dealing with just 4 or 5 notes and the type of music Green Day plays. You have every right to your opinion, but you are putting an unrealistic expectation upon the band, not only considering the fact that they are putting out 3 FREAKING ALBUMS in the span of a couple of months, but also the fact that their existing catalog of music is already extensive. Just my two cents. Also, you seem to suggest that Green Day is the only band guilty of reusing their own melodies. Not true. One example is another band I really enjoy, The Offspring. They have a couple songs that are hilariously similar to other songs, not only in the melody but in the instrumentation. Just sayin'

I know they're putting out 3 albums, but like I said they could have easily put out a 18-20 track album, so that they wouldn't have songs that sound similar to past ones. I'm not going to cut them some slack because they're releasing 3 albums. I doubt every single song out of the 37 new ones will be strong. It's like watching a movie that has a lot of great and memorable parts in it, but also it also has a lot of boring and forgettable sections that don't really need to be there in the first place because they don't add anything to the overall experience. They're just there to fill up time.

If I remember right, Billie Joe said that this song kind of wrote itself, and that worries me. The last song he said that about was Know Your Enemy, and that kind of fizzled out as a single. Repetitive and forgettable.

Don't let the songs write themselves. They're stupid songs. They reuse melodies and repeats themselves. They're bad song writers. They probably hit their kids, too. And yell at parking lot attendants. Let them write commercial jingles if they aspire to write music, but their autobiographies suck ass. Fuck songs. Songs are assholes. Stupid songs... Shut up. Idiot.

The more i listen to the clip, the more i like it. It sounds less like too much too soon every time I listen to it as well.

Who fucking cares if it sounds like "Surrender" from Cheap Trick or like "Too Much Too Soon"? Honestly. Those are both pump-ass songs.

personally I love "Too Much Too Soon" to pieces so when I heard that 99 Revolutions sounds like it I was hyped! And I actually like the song even with its repeative-ness.

I'm so glad I didn't have to go see the movie to hear the song, I'm not a fan of Will Ferrell's movies at all.

You know, it's like thrust-butt.

It's a term we use on the podcast to talk about songs that are kick ass. The kind that make you want to get up and dance around like an idiot to
