First single "Oh Love" - listen to it now

I think 90% of the reason most people hated Oh Love is because they were expecting a Let Yourself Go, which it wasn't. I don't think it would have got so many of the reactions it did if it hadn't been the first thing they heard from the trilogy.

I agree. People expected and wanted something energetic and classic 90s-style Green Day. Oh Love is totally different, with a new sound and medium tempo, and none of the punk snarl that were present on earlier records. I honestly think Oh Love is ambitious and creative - and among their best songs - but people didn't react to it as positively as it may have deserved because it didn't meet their expectations/desire for the older sound.

The reactions to Oh Love were way more negative than it deserved. It's an excellent song, and not they kind that I'd expect to be on anyone's least favorite list for an album. If it was just an album track, it could easily have been a fan favorite.

Likewise, I feel like the reactions to Let Yourself Go are oddly positive - a lot more than I think it deserves, and more than it might have gotten if it were the first song we heard. To me, that's just a mediocre song they could have done 15 years ago. Kind of a filler, easy song, imo. It's not a song that indicates that they've progressed very much in their career (not that they haven't, just this song doesn't represent that). It's just nothing special to me, whereas Oh Love does seem like a true gem.

(Honestly, I'm kind of annoyed at how well-received LYG is and how poorly Oh Love was received. And the comparisons saying LYG is sooo much better. It's completely opposite of how I see the songs. Oh Love is beautiful perfection, and Let Yourself Go is typical and a bit underwhelming. Just my opinion though...)

Either way, I think Oh Love is the perfect first single, because it shows a new side of Green Day, and will get us ready for even more different songs (like Kill The DJ). I just hope people can be happier with it, especially now that we have the energetic punk song people were craving before. :)

I still think Oh Love sounds more like it could have been on AI rather than in any 90s album or Warning

Really? I've never thought of it that way. I have a hard time deciding which album I think new GD songs would fit on, but I would put Oh Love as a b-side for 21CB. Not that it's not good enough, just that it has a similar sound (minus the overproduction on 21CB) but a totally different mood.

It's on ¡Uno!

People seem to really be struggling to place these songs on different album identity continuums. I don't recall having this problem with 21CB... I guess the songs on there are more cohesive.

We all need to just accept the fact that these are classic Uno-style songs. To me, that means a better version of Nimrod---the songs don't have anything in common, but they are all "pump-ass" (copyright the above poster).

I don't know if this has been said before, but i just listened to green day's cover of "that's alright mama" and around the 1:16 mark they say "stop when the red lights flash, baby" :P

Yeah it had been said a few times before. Until Oh Love was released I always thought that "red lights flash" line is part of the original That's alright mama song as well. Turns out it wasn't :P

So give LYG a listen, you'll feel better. :P

Couldn't have said it better. :)

Btw, they're playing it quite often at our local radio stations.

Isn't the music video being released like, REALLY soon? I thought it was the confirmed for the first week of August?

maybe they got some problems with editing it and stuff :/ hopefully we will see sth this week, because the release of the 2nd single isnt far away..

Yeah, I'm just surprised there hasn't been anymore news or discussion about it considering it's so close to the release. Granted, I think it's overshadowed a bit by Let Yourself Go and the Echoplex show discussion and stuff. Looking forward to seeing it though!

Just wishful thinking here with absolutely nothing to back it up...maybe we'll get a double A-side and they'll release the videos for 'Oh Love' and 'Kill The DJ' at the same time. I'm sure that would tempt more people into buying the single even if there's no B-sides on it :) me needs me some more physical CD singles!

That's what I was told. Pretty sure we'll get news on it soon.

Awesome, thanks for the help :)

My mom just emailed me to let me know that the radio station on at her work was just playing Oh Love! :D I still haven't heard it on the radio yet though...

Maybe we should start requesting it at those fancy websites..... Get lots of airplay for Oh Love, and watch the popular genre shift from dance pop back to awesome rock music a la Green Day. :shifty:

I wonder when we'll get to see the Oh Love video. They haven't announced anything about it in a while, and it's supposed to come out sometime this week... I want to see it!

No, I don't think so. If he was officially acknowledged, he would be on the press photos and stuff.

Or... or this.

This is pretty cool, I'm glad Jason is getting some acknowledgement for the work he's contributed even if it's just text in a booklet.

well, this is the only song to date where he is credited on GUITAR. So this is now proof he was actually involved in the recording process.

Great to see a copy of the CD. :)

^ Having Jason on the cover of the dvd would make absolute no sense. Is nice (and right) that he appears on the credits for all his contribution, but the dvd is the making of the trilogy, is not exactly something that needs another theme; like UNO, DOS and TRÉ with Billie, Mike and Tré.

I love the cd of Oh Love

Any musician who plays on a Green Day song/album always gets credited for it. For example Jason Freese is credited in the 21st CB booklet for the piano he played on the album. All Jason White being credited here shows is that he played guitar on the song. That's awesome , since he's never played on a studio recording of a Green Day song before. But it doesn't mean anything more than that.
