It's a good song, I like that they've kept it rather simple yet catchy, kind of in the way that old rock songs in general are. That's kinda cool for me. There weren't many moments in it where I was blown away really, and I could agree with anyone who says it drags...it kind of does. I wanted them to kick it in the teeth a little more and tell us a little about this party we're on our way too.

One thing I keep overlooking, however, is that this is the last track of the album. It's not the 1st or 3rd like singles usually are...this one's gonna have a totally different feel to it since closers do that. When I can get my mind in gear and imagine it as a closer, it does feel a little better.

Ultimately I think this song has its home in a live setting, provided it gets jazzed up a little, since it's so big and simple and enjoyable in that way. I like to think, however, that this is the song that everyone will pretend that they hate until late one night, either at the bar or driving home or at karaoke or a party or somethng, this song comes on and the whole room's singing it. It's got a bit of a sleeper vibe to it, like it'll just be better when there are people added to the mix.

Disagree, give cerdit where credit is due. Age is not equal to maturity. As, a 30 year old I can say that I hope I still have some maturing to do, lol!

Intresting to know you never got through puberty.

When I was first listening to it, i was pretty disappointed, I know I cant ask for this, but I was hoping for something faster and going back to a pre - American Idiot feel. But as the song went on and the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. After hearing this song, I'm excited and very much anticipating Uno. Cant wait to hear what the overall sound and feeling of the album will be like.

I agree...whenever I heard Billie sing Oh Love it made think of a classic rock song from like the 60s or 70s....it has the vintage vibe

I can't sing the 'far away' part without putting on a weird Scottish accent  I've been listening to far too much Twin Atlantic recently.

After a few listens, I've decided that "Oh Love" is the love child of the Foxboro Hot Tubs in the vocals, 1000 Hours in the guitar solos sound, and classic rock in the overall sound, all married to something wonderfully new and different.

First listen: Well, this seems like a good song.

Second listen: Wow. This song is really good.

Third listen: I really, really, really like this song.

Fourth listen: I love this song.

Fifth listen: OH MY FREAKING GOSH. I can't get enough of this song! I'm addicted.

Seriously though, it seems like most Green Day songs have been like that for me. I've really had to listen to them a few times before they grow on me. But once they do, I'm obsessed. :D

I can definitely see where Billie was coming from when he said he learned how to use his voice more as an instrument when recording the new albums. There's a new quality to it that just sounds so crisp!

Not all lyrics make sense strightaway! You make your own meanings. You read between the lines. It's not a kids story book where you have to be TOLD what's going...you interpret it in your way. And obviously the lyrics do have meaning...otherwise why would they be there? This is Green Day we're talking about. Not Nicki MaFUCKINGnaj :D

I'm exploding with happiness over this song. The context of exploding may be slightly dirty :eyebrows:

Your thinking that, at age 20, you have fully matured... is proof that you have not. :)

And now...a first stab at what the hell he's writing about. :) I'm going to avoid line-by-line analysis since I think Oh Love is better viewed as a flood of consciousness "big picture" sort of feeling rather than something extractable from any specific verse or two.

There's some good push me/pull you going on here. The overall theme suggests that the writer is both running toward something he wants and is also ready, willing, and able to run away from one who is reluctant to give that to him. The "that" is unbridled, passionate love -- "lust plus plus plus" if you will. You see this in "Won't you rain on me tonight", "Don't stop when the red lights flash", and "Won't you take me close to you" on the one hand, and "Tonight my heart's on the loose" in the chorus on the other. While that may say at one level that "I'm relentless" or "I won't back off 'til I get what I'm craving from you", it also implies not-so-subtly that "if I can't get satisfaction from you, then I'll just go find it somewhere else." "Far away, far away, waste away tonight" drops at the climax of the chorus, reinforcing this: "if you don't join me on my little magic carpet ride, I'm going to leave you in the dust." Viewed this way, "Oh Love" is not a solicitation -- it's a warning.

Juxtaposed against the plodding, staccato guitar and rhythm in the verses is the sense of urgency expressed in the lyrics -- he wants action, he "can't be satisfied", and he's rejecting the picky ones who'll just make him wait: "Oh losers and choosers, won't you please hold on my [line]" -- I know the official lyric is "life" but sometimes I hear "line" in there and that makes a lot more sense in context.

So, I'm finding this to be a surprisingly interesting song despite its overall simplicity -- the songwriting, as I've mentioned before, takes a deep nod to the lyrical styles of vintage Green Day (39/Smooth and Kerplunk!) but marries it with modern instruments and production techniques. I'm not finding an American Idiot or 21st Century Breakdown degree of explosive depth (or murky muddle) in the lyrics, and I don't think it was intended that way.

What do the rest of y'all think?

I admire this analysis, but it only served to prove to me that there's no coherent message to the song :P Just a lot of directionless referencing of various emotions. I'm OK with it. It could have been better, more purposeful, but the music and general feel of it satisfy the sense of yearning enough that I don't even feel the need to bother to understand exactly what the hell he's trying to say.

It's a nice song but it's not the song, the one that makes waiting for the album that much harder

I agree that it's not THE song, but funny thing is that it actually made me wait for the album much harder. I was slightly dissapointed when I first head it, but it makes me wait for the album even more. I feel like it's kinda teasing, it's certanly not the best song from uno, it's great way to finish album, and that's it. But hell yeah it's catchy. And it's nice finally to have some new studio song. So I'm feeling positive about all this.

What I'm experiencing with this song is like what happened when Marilyn Manson revealed his single for his new album..I was unimpressed...kind of disappointing and had low expectations for the new album, but when I heard it I was amazed. So I figured the same will happen with Green Day's album, the song is pretty good....nothing fantastic, but then I'll get the album be blown away! :D

I started to think what the lyrics is about and I think the entire song is about life, and the "Oh Love" is actually the gift of life.

Oh love, oh love

Won't you rain on me tonight

Not really sure what he means, but apparently he wants to be wet :creep:. Could also mean a love shower or something like that.

"Oh life, oh life

Please don't pass me by

Don't stop, don't stop

Don't stop when the red lights flash"

He's telling that life shouldn't pass by and stop when the red lights flash. Life should go through difficulties and not end too soon.

"Oh ride

Free ride

Won't you take me close to you"

Life is a free ride that we get and we shouldn't abandon it, instead stay in it and live it to the fullest.

"Far away, far away

Waste away tonight

I'm wearing my heart on a noose

Tonight my heart's on the loose"

We should have fun (i.e. waste away tonight), but the most important thing is to be open to love (wearing heart on a noose =heart is loose) and you should always be open to new ideas etc.

"Oh lights and action

I just can't be satisfied

Oh losers and choosers

Won't you please hold on my life"

The meaning of life, and that no matter what we do we cannot satisfy our needs fully, there's always something left in the void.

Oh hours and hours

Like the dog years of the day

Old story same old story

Won't you see the light of day

Hours pass on by and it's the same old story over and over again and not finding the light, i.e. the positives in life which is how you really should approach life.

Talk myself out of feeling

Talk my way out of control

Talk myself out of falling in love

Falling in love with you

Quite straightforward here. Falling in love, but being too afraid, but love takes over. This is tied to having the Heart on the loose.

I mean, it's not easy to start to decipher what he means, but there's at least something to work on here.

IMO this song is about life and how you should appreciate it and take what it gives you and make the most out of opportunities. And most importantly to be open to love someone with all your heart and to not be afraid to have your heart on the loose.

Of course I may have misunderstood something or some parts of the song which could make this explanation completely useless, but this is how I would see it now.

This really is a lot better than that shitty No Doubt single... Just saying
