And now...a first stab at what the hell he's writing about. :) I'm going to avoid line-by-line analysis since I think Oh Love is better viewed as a flood of consciousness "big picture" sort of feeling rather than something extractable from any specific verse or two.

There's some good push me/pull you going on here. The overall theme suggests that the writer is both running toward something he wants and is also ready, willing, and able to run away from one who is reluctant to give that to him. The "that" is unbridled, passionate love -- "lust plus plus plus" if you will. You see this in "Won't you rain on me tonight", "Don't stop when the red lights flash", and "Won't you take me close to you" on the one hand, and "Tonight my heart's on the loose" in the chorus on the other. While that may say at one level that "I'm relentless" or "I won't back off 'til I get what I'm craving from you", it also implies not-so-subtly that "if I can't get satisfaction from you, then I'll just go find it somewhere else." "Far away, far away, waste away tonight" drops at the climax of the chorus, reinforcing this: "if you don't join me on my little magic carpet ride, I'm going to leave you in the dust." Viewed this way, "Oh Love" is not a solicitation -- it's a warning.

Juxtaposed against the plodding, staccato guitar and rhythm in the verses is the sense of urgency expressed in the lyrics -- he wants action, he "can't be satisfied", and he's rejecting the picky ones who'll just make him wait: "Oh losers and choosers, won't you please hold on my [line]" -- I know the official lyric is "life" but sometimes I hear "line" in there and that makes a lot more sense in context.

So, I'm finding this to be a surprisingly interesting song despite its overall simplicity -- the songwriting, as I've mentioned before, takes a deep nod to the lyrical styles of vintage Green Day (39/Smooth and Kerplunk!) but marries it with modern instruments and production techniques. I'm not finding an American Idiot or 21st Century Breakdown degree of explosive depth (or murky muddle) in the lyrics, and I don't think it was intended that way.

What do the rest of y'all think?

Super catchy song, but I wouldn't quite call it "great" yet. It's nice to listen to. Maybe it just needs to grow on me. It's kind of repetitive, reminds me of Know Your Enemy. It's a nice song but it's not the song, the one that makes waiting for the album that much harder.

And I've just kind of skipped over the whole autotune discussion (and actually the whole thread so most likely everything I'm going to say has been said already), not planning to join in and no knowledge of mixing, I just don't really like how Billie's voice doesn't sound all natural. Like it did on just about every song on 21stCB. Maybe it's just a multiplied thing but idk.

I love the lyrics video, especially how you require old school 3D glasses (which I unfortunately don't have). Cool idea and it looks all spacy.

Its catchiness will help though. It was stuck in my head for three hours after listening it just twice.

I love when fans become overanalyzing studio experts. Why not just take the song for what it is and stop acting like a record producer?

Because autotune is annoying and comes very close to ruining the song.

This.

I love the song as it is, I'm glad i dont know much technically so I can just sit back and enjoy instead of analyzing it like an expert and finding out bad things about it..

Well, bro, we've been waiting months for a single song and then we wait another month for the whole record, what are we supposed to but analyze? Andres isn't paying the server bills for we can all just clap like seals.

Musically...I thought it was pretty damn good. Loved the guitars...loved the drums. Lyrically...Made absolutely no sense, but hey, it's Billie Joe :D Catchy chorus though...I keep catching myself humming it as I do housework. All in all...I think it was an okay choice for a first single. Once the video comes out I think it'll make a bigger impact...people like visuals.

My kid liked it and that makes me happy as hell since he's a Katy Perry/Lady Gaga fan. How I gave birth to someone who doesn't like Green Day I'll never know. I use to sing Green Day songs as lullaby's to him for god's sake

ok so these lyrics make no sense to me.

Billie, I challenge you to not use the words "light" and "day" in any more songs.

A clean-cut song like this requires a certain level of production. There's nothing excessive about the auto tune or pitch correction.

It's pretty hard though, to do rhymes without some cliches, unless you are willing to bend words.

maybe because I am a producer/mixer who has a degree from Full Sail?

Im not critizing the song at all I like it alot been on repeat since 8am

This song is so damn catchy! I've already found myself humming it to myself around the house multiples times and having the urge to listen to it again. lol I'll have to admit on my first listen I wasn't so sure because it never picked up, but after listening to it two or three more times I've grown to love it.

Robotic voice shit can sound awesome if an awesome band uses it, like System of a Down on Old School Hollywood, it's just shitty when it's every part of every song or used by someone who is irredeemably bad at music anyway (most pop stars)

I used to use Abandon All Ships as a band that made autotone sort of alright, although their new record swallows so much dick I'm a little ashamed to mention I still like their old shit. :P

Im not jumping on the robotic but alot of artists over use it and half the time it doesnt fit the song or the song themes

I have a feeling that once the track gets played live, thats when it will really shine. Though i love it now, i'm sure the band putting some life into it onstage will really help with many peoples problem with its draggy feeling.

Until Billie drops the falsetto and we all cry that is

The lyrics are shitty.

Just because the vocals sound better than they do live doesn't mean they're autotuned. There are 100s of effects that can put on vocals, but people assume that everything that doesn't sound natural is autotune. Some sounds might not even be an effect. For example, that falsetto note that sounds really good probably sounds like that because he sung it really well. Falsetto is done using the edges of your vocal cords while a chest voice is done using the middle parts. The more you use your chest voice for a period of time, the weaker the falsetto (edges of the vocal cords) sound during that time. That's why it doesn't sound as strong live.

HOLY FUCK. I loved this song when I heard it on my shitty laptop speakers, but I JUST listened to it at full blast on headphones, and now I'm crying. I actually am astounded at the difference in quality. I've been sensibly appreciating the song for the last 4 hours, but now I'm actually shaking.

Fuck you, laptop speakers, for insulting Green Day's music into only being somewhat awesome... this song is orgasmic in my headphones.

I never understood it but some fans will pay attention to production and stuff like that and I just don't get it. Personally I don't care. If the music is good then I'm happy, so I totally agree with you here

I really like this song, as a first single. I didn't feel too great about it, having only heard the live version. But they blew my expectations for the single out of the water. I love Billie's voice here, especially his falsetto on "falling in love". That gave me chills. However, the only thing I somewhat dislike about the song is the lyrics. Maybe it's just me, but I don't really follow. Certain parts flow, but as a whole, I feel like they don't make sense.

Don't say you didn't ask for it.

I don't get this at all, he was way over 30 when they recorded AI, and his voice hasn't changed anything. If there's a difference, it's the production that does it.

Disagree, give cerdit where credit is due. Age is not equal to maturity. As, a 30 year old I can say that I hope I still have some maturing to do, lol!

listening to it again and the lyrics are cracking me up. oh billie joe
