Blond-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Few more thoughts. I like the "space" you can hear in the song. Refreshing change from the production of 21st Century Breakdown where every guitar had to be really loud and had an undercurrent of guitars doing slides and stuff in the background. I'm hoping this will be a common feature of these 3 records. I think the guitar solo bit could have been done better, he plays the standard 39/Smooth lick and then you expect it to continue at that speed but then it just goes into a pretty boring scale thing to end and it feels like a wasted opportunity which will hopefully be rectified live, I appreciate that aimless noodling doesn't always work as well on a studio version as it does when bands play live and play extended solos. Definitely feels like an aimless noodling opportunity. I also think they could have got from the end of the verse to the start of the chorus a bit faster, there's no need for the extra bars in between.
Johnny Higher Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Don't confuse the autotune (corrector of voice) -like shit that we can hear on the radio- with the filter (who sound like a telephone effect)- like the intro of Letterbomb).
Nzap Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 The most important thing for me with autotune is that it is used tastefully. This qualifies in my book for it, albeit not but much. Billie sounds, i don't know, too metallic, too robotic or something similar for me as well, but it doesn't bother me. Or maybe that is how he sounds, I don't know really.

Don't confuse the "autotune" like shit that we can hear on the radio with autotune, the thing used to fix an occasional wrong note.
daria02 Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Eh, I'm not trained. It's just a "if you know what to listen for" kinda thing. And I love it too, I just think I'd love it more if I could hear Billie's real voice. Never said you were trained, but it may be easier for a trained ear to spot it.
Cori Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 The radio announcer just said after the song played, "That was Green Day with 'Oh Love' the new song from Uno coming out the 25th of September." I did a little squeal of happiness after that because it made it seem so real.
The Grohl Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Don't confuse the "autotune" like shit that we can hear on the radio with autotune, the thing used to fix an occasional wrong note. Yeah I'm sure lots of artists, not just pop ones, use it to fix any imperfections or whatever. it's just that if you're not looking for it you can't find it.
Heather. Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 This really is one of those songs that grows and grows on you. I also love that the vocals aren't buried like they were so often on the last album. Rob was telling the truth when he said that every hit of every instrument (including the instrument of voice) would be heard. It's glorious. Still hasn't come on any radio stations by me *shakes fists*
kate_ochoxx Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 I think its a bit long. there must be a radio edit
Guest Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 I can see the stage staying unlit as they start the song, and with the rising organ comes the light and the pyro at its peak. I was nodding my head along slightly to the song, but overall left just wanting a bit more. Such a greedy fan! A concussion blast during this song would be like blowing up half the stage during I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing. I'd shit my pants, and not in a good "Holiday breakdown" way. so, for those who wanted to hear a trilogy of American Idiot, please, they will create a masterpieces in other way. I'd have been very disappointed with a trilogy that sounded like AI. They already tried do do an album that sounded like AI. It was called 21st Century Breakdown; it was lacking. I wanted to hear something different, and there's no doubt this is different. It's just not very good. Nobody (as far as I can see) has come in here and gone "Well that sucked..." Well, I kinda did, but I gave a list of valid reasons. Why I read that Billie Joe sing with autotune in this song. He's NOT. I'm a musician and I know the voice of BJ, I can tell you he does not us any autotune, everyone here who see him on stage can say he's a very good singer and he don't need autotune at all. Stop sayin' that. He is an excellent singer, which makes the use of Autotune on this track all the more ridiculous. Really now, Almost all? I thought maybe you were assuming the "falling in love" bit was autotuned, but almost all? This isn't a live recording, he couldn't hit every note perfectly while singing live, but the dude can sing, I think that's pretty clear when you see them live. I really don't think he needs autotune to get a good studio recording of the vocals that doesn't need autotune. In a studio you can do multiple takes, in a studio you can get much clearer vocals from the audio equipment. I believe that in a studio Billie can sound like this. Upon further listen, it does sound like Autotune is restricted to the choruses more than I originally thought. I know Billie Joe can sound like this in a studio--so why didn't he? And do you have a source on the no Autotune on stage thing? It's not a knock against him if he does use it--almost all bands do pitch-correct on stage now to some extent. Oh honey thats not real autotune, thats putting the CD in a microwave I love you. oh, they are? i dont think they are so "blatantly" autotuned.. 'cause he sound even better live, and when they perform live, they dont use autotune. Again, source? Almost everyone pitch-corrects on stage now, and I'd bet that Green Day does as well. Autotune doesn't necessarily mean synth ALL the notes, just means that the vocal runs through a machine that corrects bum notes (to an extent) before being piped out.
Kitty Purry Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 stil listening to oh love gets better every time! this isnt even the best song on uno. So i have no idea what to expect. but im super excited more than with 21cb
spark in the night Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 It's not auto-tune. but I can understand what people are kinda saying. It's like his voice is mulitplied? Or it's some kind of filter? Whatever it is, it has been used too much on post AI songs and I want a CLEARER-ER-ER-ER voice. The guitar sound in the background sounds like crinkling static paper noise. I don't know enough about recording/mixing to understand how music sounds but to me, it sounds filtered. And it's not just this song. I have heard this on a lot of GD songs.

amy_runs Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 I like it but it's kind of boring. It stays the same the whole time and never really picks up. The chorus is catchy, but I wish they chose a different first single. Idk maybe it will grow on me. Still, new Green Day is better than no new Green Day.
DenmarksGreenDayGirl Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 I think the song gets better and better, everytime i listen to it. It's just so catchy!
Trotsky Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 I really don't care what they choose a first single because *prepares anti-flame shield*, Green Day's commercial success, or for that matter the commercial success of any band which has already "made it", is totally meaningless to me. Like with most records, there will be songs I like and songs I don't and the songs I like go on my phone and I listen to them happily ever after.
WhiteTim Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 It does sound like autotune probally set at level 2/3 Autotune is not a bad program just til u set it at level 10 on all settimgs to get the robotic voice shit... On a normal setting you'd NEVER know hell Billy Corgan of Smashingthe Pumpkins has used it on every album since Adore...
colour_me_stupid_ Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 I love it I thought it would get faster too, but I wasn't disappointed at all when it didn't, there are 3 whole albums to get fast songs onto
Holly Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Okay, I fully take back my initial 'meh' feeling about it. I freaking love it now after having it on repeat! It still feels as though its building up to something a bit bigger and more powerful, but wow. It sounds great. Sticking it in my headphones full blast is so much better than it being quiet on my laptop speakers. It really is a case of the louder it is, the better it sounds.
1039SweetChildren Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 I love when fans become overanalyzing studio experts. Why not just take the song for what it is and stop acting like a record producer?
burnout409 Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Honestly this song is brilliant, its a fucking great Rock song, yes its not a punk song, but seriously who gives a fuck, Punk and decent Rock/Rock N Roll Music is all I need, and Green Day have done both to perfection! I can hear a lot of old rock influence in hear, band like "The Who" "The Rolling Stones" etc, and still its got that 90's punk sound to it, with Tre's signature drum tone (I love it) Mike's bass so tight with Tre's drum as always and not overplaying but still interesting. The Guitar tones, slight change from previous Green Day, now a lot closer to FBHT and a Rock N Roll Sound, an awesome melodic solo, not over the top but enough that its awesome, and Billie's vocals as strong as ever, and i really like the lyrics Love this song!

Robotic voice shit can sound awesome if an awesome band uses it, like System of a Down on Old School Hollywood, it's just shitty when it's every part of every song or used by someone who is irredeemably bad at music anyway (most pop stars) I used to use Abandon All Ships as a band that made autotone sort of alright, although their new record swallows so much dick I'm a little ashamed to mention I still like their old shit.
