Red Lights Flash Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 I second those two question. If anyone here has IC, feel free to submit my questions if you want to!
Hedwig Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 If anyone here has IC, feel free to submit my questions if you want to! I would, but I don't
sara_gd Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I don't think you're using the word critic right - in your question it should be "critique"....i think? and yeah it sounds a little negative so probably doesn't stand as good a chance try softening it up a bit Ah Ok, thanks. But how?
DannyDirnt Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Well, I agree your question sounds a bit strong. It sounds like if you meant you know he's a better bass player, but that his bass lines nowadays are simple and mediocre. I'd just directly ask why he just follows the guitar in songs in last 2 albums instead of making something different. I love the "are there gonna be any kickass bass line in the trilogy" question as well, but I'd put some examples of what you understand as a kickass bass line, because we shouldn't forget that he composes his bass lines and he most likely thinks all of them are kickass.

That's exactly what I think, but I don't want to say it like that haha no, I still think there's cool basslines in American Idiot and 21stCB and I also think that a good musician is not the one who plays many notes but the one who plays them well, and he's amazing at that But I miss it when the guitar stops for a moment and you have that tiny bit of bass, and of course things like Longview and J.A.R., as I pointed out. But I can't say all of this in my question, I need to sintetize what I think in a proper way, and I'm not being able to do it That's true, but I doubt that he thinks the "bassline" for Boulevard of Broken Dreams is kickass, I suppose he just sees that song as a song where the bass isn't important. "Lately, especially in Green Day's most popular songs (Boulevard of Broken Dreams, 21 guns...), the bass doesn't have an important roll. Why is this? I think you're a great bass player and that you should show it more often, [i'm sure you have some great basslines in your head and I've even seen you doing slap recently!]" How is this? And should I include the bracked part?
DannyDirnt Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I'd include that part. I hope he says bass will be more important in the trilogy, I've always been in love with the bass line for She.
Ritz Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I will agree to Sara ! Mike's basslines in Dookie era was too good ! Longview is a masterpiece as always but in 21CB and AI basslines he wasn't showing, i dont know, what his bass can do !? I, as a bassist myself, enjoy playing Dookie stuff more than AI or 21CB. Dookie is challenging, the grooves and the other stuff ! Its melodic I love Boulevard of Broken Dreams basslines and the solos of Holiday and East Jesus Nowhere are great too But I miss the bass that I get to hear when I play Dookie :/
DannyDirnt Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I had already noticed that I can't really hear and differ the bass in AI and 21CB from the other instruments. Bass should be also louder.
Ritz Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I had already noticed that I can't really hear and differ the bass in AI and 21CB from the other instruments. Bass should be also louder. Agreed ! Basically that was that I wanted to say

If the bass would be more 'active' in those two songs they'd lose their "less is more" feel. If I were you, I'd change it to something like this: "Lately, especially on American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, the bass is more in the background and plays a less important role than on the earlier albums (songs like Longview or J.A.R). I'm sure you have some great basslines in your head and I've even seen you doing slap recently! Any chance we'll get to hear more of your incredible playing on the trilogy albums?" That way, it'll give him the opportunity to answer regarding the bass playing on the previous two albums, while in the meantime we'll also get to know if the new albums are going to be any different from that point of view.

Brilliant! I think I'm going to put the same exact words that you used thank you very much!
gerardsangel4977 Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Wow Idiot Club is actually doing something cool now! I remember when the IC first started (the online version anyway) we got monthly Q&A's with the band. Granted, that didn't last, but it was tons of fun while it did. Glad to see them moving back that direction (and, yeah, a lot of people asked stupid things then too) EDIT: Actually I'd also like to ask him about how the band evolved to letting Billie Joe exclusively doing the talking during live shows. It's an understandable move, but it must have been weird the first few times Mike didn't get to say anything. It's true that Mike doesn't talk *as often* as he used to on stage, but you make it sound like he's been forbidden from talking now.... That's because he's soft spoken and so calm... The "quiet one" of the band Mike? Quiet? Softspoken?
Harry Potter. Posted May 25, 2012 Author Posted May 25, 2012 You can't ask questions anymore! They've been submitted to Mike! So excited and hoping he picks mine (you can call this a waist of money but I really wanted to ask Mike a question ).
DannyDirnt Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Oh God I really really hope Mike answers some cool questions! Mike? Quiet? Softspoken? Mike? Yes Quiet? Totally Softspoken? Most of the time
Harry Potter. Posted May 25, 2012 Author Posted May 25, 2012 Mike? Yes Quiet? Totally Softspoken? Most of the time Then where did this quote come from? If my kid didn't rebel, she wouldn't be my kid
DannyDirnt Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Then where did this quote come from? That doesn't mean she isn't quiet and softspoken. He talks way less than Billie, and his pronunciation is very calm and soft.
Annie, get your gun Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Mike? Quiet? Softspoken? To me, he is. He's not as loud as Billie and Tré. Then where did this quote come from? It's not what he says, but how he says it. "The Quiet One" part is from a magazine.
Harry Potter. Posted May 25, 2012 Author Posted May 25, 2012 Magazines sometimes say such stupid stuff I sometimes feel like punching the guy that wrote the article.
DannyDirnt Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Magazines sometimes say such stupid stuff I sometimes feel like punching the guy that wrote the article. But Mike is quiet. I don't see him trying to say things very badly. He talks just sometimes, and most time it's only a short sentence.
-Billiejoezee- Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I wasn't able to ask a question because i couldn't make the idiot club payment on time...
Annie, get your gun Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Magazines sometimes say such stupid stuff I sometimes feel like punching the guy that wrote the article. I know, sometimes they wrote shit. But in my opinion Mike is the quiet of the band.
DannyDirnt Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I know, sometimes they wrote shit. But in my opinion Mike is the quiet of the band. Same When I first saw this topic I was imagining things like: "Dear Mike Dirnt, You've been my inspiration for 5 years.I'd like to know how the freaking hell you get to be so hot." Ok, the crazy moment is over. Now, I wonder if someone has asked about his dairy life instead of a Green Day question. Or maybe about FHT?
