XxRedundantCastaway86xX Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 If I didn't intend on having a family when I'm older, I would totally have this song played at my funeral.
moonflower93 Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 i love this song. tre has done some great songwriting here. a timeless classic.
Zelda Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 I'm from the South. I must be a special kind of girl. Ah, such a wonderful song. I think we need a studio version of it. And a music video, perhaps? I'd love to see what the guys cum up with for that.
BadgerLALA Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Oh I remember this song from my early Green Day days then I joined this forum I'm not sure but I think I was thinking of having it as my ring tone at that time Tre is the only one that can sing a song about sucking dick and get away with it
Hermione Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Fascinating fact: this song is a tribute to late 80s/early 90s gangsta rap. Many of the lyrics are stolen/quoted from various amusing gangsta rap songs. As a rap fan I was aware of this from the moment I heard the title. My brother had downloaded a load of Green Day songs that I didn't have yet, I saw Like A Rat Does Cheese on the list and I was like "Whaaaaaaaaaat??? That's a line from a 2 Live Crew song, surely not?!" But it was real! The fact that Green Day would make such a hilarious song including influences from my favourite genre of music (and mix it with country music of all things) put them up even higher in my estimation. Then later I found out Tre was a big NWA fan so it all made sense. "Nibble on my dick like a rat does cheese" - 2 Live Crew: "Suck my dick until your lips fall off" - Geto Boys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbtJMP8wZhQ "Just don't bite it" - NWA: I suspect some of the other lines are from rap songs too . I'll never get tired of the hilariousness that is this song. And that video of Tre singing it in 2009 is brilliant! I love that he still remembers it
Elena Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 STOP! i requested it some time ago! xD but i requested it in for the week where it got SotW ...but it's awesome that you requested it some time ago...good taste ;D

melissawebster Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 That some of the lyrics came from rap songs makes me love this song even more. So funny!

Pretty fucking clever, really.
Hermione Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Yeah but it's interesting that when you put these words to a country-sounding song, you're showing that these seemingly-opposite camps have something in common - like, their view of women. Pretty fucking clever, really. That's true! Never thought of it that way. I'm not a huge fan of those 2 Live Crew and NWA songs I must say, I appreciate the funny and clever wordplay though. At that time the aim was to push the boundaries and be as outrageously offensive and shocking as possible, with plenty of humour thrown in. I miss that in today's rap, the lyrics aren't as extreme but that humour isn't there either so it seems as though the things they say are more serious than just for effect.
melissawebster Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I think Eminem does a good job of reaching into his soul and making it personal and meaningful as hell. "Cleaning Out My Closet" was an incredible song. But yeah, the humor's lost for the most part. I've never been a fan of rap music in general, but I freaking loved The Beastie Boys, mainly because of the story behind why they started singing rap music and because they basically mocked the genre when they got their start. I don't know how true this is, but the story I heard was that they were a punk rock band living the starving artist life, and then one day one of them said if they played rap music they'd be rich. So they changed to rap music as a joke and were overnight successes. And their early music is so funny. I haven't listened to them in years, so I don't know what their music sounds like now.

Totally agree about Eminem, there is still some great rap now. I think that great over the top gangsta rap of the early 90s was a special thing that couldn't really be recreated now though, maybe that's why Tre decided to celebrate it in this song! That's true about the Beastie Boys, they began as a hardcore punk band (you can listen to the EP they released in 1981 here). I'm not sure if that's why they changed to rap but they're good at it so I'm glad they did. Their early stuff is hilarious but they actually got much more mature after that, they make brilliant and thoughtful rap music and I highly recommend them. Here's an example of a newer song, it even samples Sonic Reducer by the Dead Boys so they've still got that punk influence. I think they show that punk and rap have similar roots and aren't necessarily all that different. Incidentally one of them's married to Kathleen Hanna (slight Green Day connection ).
