Bastard of 1967 Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 My immediate notion was about a family having explosive relationships with each other. Bingo. Shining spotlights on dysfunction wherever it exists -- relationships, politics, or otherwise -- is one of the recurrent themes in Billie Joe's songwriting. While it seems that the song "Nuclear Family" will probably make the cut, the question is whether that's going to be a dominant theme on the album or whether they've got other things in mind. How that plays out will influence the title more so than any one song will, I think.

My feeling is that this is gonna be a 'now' album, and that maybe 'Nuclear Family' will expand the kind of relationship stuff that 'Redundant' and such pitched. I don't know - I've only listened to the new stuff in a patchy way, and as regards 'Nuclear Family', I'm only going on the title and what it brings to me, don't have any notion of the lyrics. I would argue with 'dysfunction' in this setting - 'nuclear family' would seem like this regular unit of society, and at the same time, you got nuclear fission and fusion - you can have this tight family unit of strong personalities that clash and explode but at the same time, they all belong together.
Mary711 Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I don't really care, but maybe this ignorance if bad, because maybe I'd like it,but I don't even know what the American Idiot musical is about It's about what the album is about?
uhleckseee Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Now correct me if I'm wrong and I'm sorry if it's been said, but to go along with the Nuclear Family talk, isn't Nuclear Family the term for "the American dream" style of family? Stay at home mother, hard working business father, two kids, house with a white picket fence, etc? I hear people talk about, and believe, that, "he nuclear family is now dead in our society." Where do you even see it anymore? Nowadays in order to hold rent on a place, you either need to be making a shit-ton of money at work, or have a roomate. If you're married and have kids, you can't make a living with just one person working. It's extremely rare. Both parents need to have jobs now. So maybe where that song is going, and the theme maybe for this upcoming album? Obviously these guys have grown and matured over the time it's been since we've gotten a personal record like Warning. Twelve years. So if this album is going to be more personal and less story-telling (I'm not complaining, it's just the direction that I feel it's heading in), then they're going to dive into concepts like the nuclear family. These guys can support their families on their income...they're fucking rockstars. They sort of live the nuclear family idea, except for the fact that they aren't home most of the time due to touring and recording. Idk how they feel on the issue and where they stand with their families on this, but to me it makes sense.
DannyDirnt Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 ^ Wow,you just blew me away! That makes a lot of sense, very sensible post!
Scarlett93 Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 I hope they will also sell vinyls and Chris Bilheimer did an awesome job with 21st CB so hoping he will be involve again in the artwork process.
Harry Potter. Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 I hope they will also sell vinyls They did so with all their other studio albums so I don't see a reason why they shouldn't do so with the new one.
classof12 Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 I don't know if anyone has said this before but, if we look back for the last 3 albums we can see that the name of the first song (American Idiot, 12st Century breakdown, Warning) is the name of the album, so if you look this pic you'll se that the fisrt song on the whiteboard is nuclear family, so IMO if the albums is going to be called as a song, it'll be Nuclear Family.

Well spotted!
classof12 Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Well spotted! haha, thanks but maybe they'll change the songs or whatever...or maybe they'll go back to the "name because of one reason not a song" era.
Harry Potter. Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 or maybe they'll go back to the "name because of one reason not a song" era. I kind of hope so... Now that I started actually thinking about it...
classof12 Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 I kind of hope so... Now that I started actually thinking about it... yeah, it could be kinda find trying to figure out what the hell's the reason of the name
Moyeszet Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 I kind of fell in love with the "Too young to Die" thing. A title in that range would be reaaaally cool. You know, they're all going on 40 and it would be quite significant to have something like that, that says "40 and still rolling". Then I don't know, but I really like the "conceptual title" era. and for the cover, something iconic, like an unity, like AI or Kerplunk.
pretty_and_demented Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Yeah, I really miss the random titles, even the songs with random titles that have nothing to do with the song at all. Who knows, they could totally be misleading us ans give us a TOTAL fucking surprise.

DecanoLP Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 I'd love if they picked an album title again that doesn't appear as a song title on the album itself. Nuclear Family sounds pretty cool though although we can't even discuss this yet.
greendaytodeathandback Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Who knows with them, after all, they did do a rock opera They love to surprise us, I mean look at the amount of surprise shows last year!! I really hope that the title is total irrelevant to the album and that they put some random shit on it like 'All By Myself', y'know??

Sprry but I can't avoid wondering something: is it be or Tré is still fatter? I've noticed that Tré gets fatter in every new album lol
classof12 Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Sprry but I can't avoid wondering something: is it be or Tré is still fatter? I've noticed that Tré gets fatter in every new album lol yeah, Billie and Tré get a little homelesses between album hehe.
Killsometime Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Where've you guys been? It's called "It's Fuck Time." Billie told me himself over Twitter, in a tweet that was sent out to everyone. So I wonder what the album could look like?
befgio16 Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 The album isn't about anything from what I've heard at live shows. "Make Out Party" singing about making out. "Stray Heart" "Carpe Diem" "Amanda", it's almost like another Nimrod record really. But like Nimrod on speed, so it's gonna be a great album and I can't wait to hear an see it.
VisionsofGreenDay115 Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 The title Nuclear Family just doesnt sound like a GREEN DAY title... i guess i need to wait and see IF thats the album title... and listen to the song to really feel it. But why couldnt the new album be Cigarettes and Valentines?? Yeah, they would be going into the past and ive heard that Green Day is a band of moving forward... but they have gone back in the past and re-did things... like re-doing Welcome to Paradise.... Im pretty sure I heard one time that Good Riddance was written during the Dookie era... and Billie finally went back to it for the release of nimrod. Also WMUWSE was going to be released on Shenanigans but the band decided to wait to release it until American Idiot... C&V could be a huge possibility, but with all the talk, and now the "supposed setlist" on one of the videos... it seems it could be Nuclear Family.
Hermione Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Also WMUWSE was going to be released on Shenanigans but the band decided to wait to release it until American Idiot... No it wasn't, Billie's said it was the first song written for American Idiot but that was after Shenanigans was released. And Shenanigans is just a collection of old b-sides (with one new fun song on it as a bonus) anyway, there's no way a song like that would've been put on there. Pretty sure at this point that it's the songs from the secret shows, that was the point of playing them. Whether they'll call it Nuclear Family or not is anyone's guess but pretty certain those songs are what the album's gonna be made up of. Some of them could've started off on C&V though, who knows. They must have hundreds of songs they've written in the past but never released and I'm sure they end up using them or parts of them for new songs from time to time and we don't even know.
Ratchet Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 I think they will call it Nuclear Family BUT! I love them to call their album that makes the rest of population cringe and us Green Day fans smile and over use it like, "Awesome as Fuck" XD
DannyDirnt Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 If they remade a song like they did for Welcome to Paradise,I'd like them to remake Going to Pasalacqua
