At the time when CeeLo chose him, they didn't know anything about his background though right? I saw the full ep a little bit ago and saw that they explained his background...so the viewing audience now knows. I dunno...I just feel like if I were them, I'd see his talent as something already mastered, and not needing coaching.

No, the coaches don't know anything at the time of the blind auditions. There are a lot of people on The Voice (both this season and last) that had record deals in the past and have previously been on other reality shows, so I don't think it's a big deal. It's a show that gives people second, third and fourth chances for sure. One of the other contestants this season was Alicia Keys' backup singer for years, and last year Dia Frampton from the band Meg and Dia was the runner up. They had a several albums and played Warped Tour a few years in a row, but their label dropped them so Dia tried out for the show. Now she has a solo album and is on tour with Blake.

Yes, those are all wonderful things for those people...but to me, working up-front publicly with two extremely well-known bands (Queen being the other, for those who haven't seen the video) kind of puts him on a pedestal above the others. Alicia Keys backup singer is pretty badass, but Tony wasn't just a backup, he was a star. Fuck, he still is a star. He has a whole name for himself already, even if it's not 100% where he wants it to be.

It's not that I DON'T want him to do well, I want him to win more than anything. To me I just see the judges looking at him as something they can't do much more with (I'm not 100% sure what the concept of the whole show is and how it works) because he's already worked with the best of the best. It's almost like an unfair advantage...

That being said, I truly hope he takes the cake every single fucking week. And I wish that Aspen would've sang a couple lines for Carson. She was so adorable!

Also, do you guys think he's going to revisit his American Idiot routes and treat the audience to some St. Jimmy glitter?

I'm sure it will come up at some point that he's worked with GD and Queen, but I don't think Cee Lo will think of him as someone he can't help in any way. Tony seems to want to step away from Broadway and tackle a mainstream career as a "pop rock" singer. He wants to be a star in a different sky, I suppose. I think he knew he would get picked and the fact that he has a built in fanbase will definitely help him when the voting starts. Next he has to survive the battle round, which is when two singers are paired together to sing the same song, and their coach picks a favorite, sending the other singer home. No matter what he is getting exposure and now a lot of people know who he is, so that's a step in the right direction for him. He always has a home on the stage if this doesn't work out for some reason.

We've had The Voice in Germany some time ago and it was a really big deal. Nice to see this video. His performance was amazing, I just love his voice. Good luck, Tony!

I really like his voice, but I don't understand, why he's taking part in a casting show, I mean, he's such a good broadway(!) singer!!

But his performance was awesome!

Who Is Tony Vincent From The Voice Season 2?

Rocking out is not a new task for 38-year-old Tony Vincent. The performer found his start on Broadway — not too shabby — playing both Mark and Rodger in Rent.

When Green Day turned their 2004 album, American Idiot, into a Broadway show by the same name, Tony knew it was the right place for him.

He originated the role of St. Jimmy in the show and received high praise from critics including Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers who said, “the standout is vocal powerhouse Tony Vincent as St. Jimmy.”

Tony stayed with the show until December 2010 and was succeeded by Green Day’s own Billie Joe Armstrong.

Green Day isn’t the only iconic rock band Tony has worked with. He has also trained by Queen to star in their West End musical, We Will Rock You. He followed the show to Las Vegas for its North American premiere, and on the stage, he met his wife.

As of the taping of Tony’s round of blind auditions, his wife was 16 months pregnant so it seems this Broadway star and Voice contestant will now earn the new title of Dad!

Even with his impressive résumé judge Cee Lo Green was the only one to turn his chair. The performer seemed a bit disappointed, but hopefully he’ll be able to show the other judges what they’ll be missing.

OMG that says that Aspen was 16 MONTHS pregnant! Can you even imagine?!

So now he goes head to head against another of Cee Lo's team and then what? Voting by the public? I've not seen this show before but it seems similar going forward to how Idol works.

Rofl, I was enjoying everything up until the months part as well. That made me laugh

i watched his blind audition this morning and thought he sounded so amazing. pissed me off they called him "over the top" especially with christina aguilera one of the most over the top performers ever. nice to see he's still rocking a little of that st. jimmy look (or did he always look like that?). hope he goes far. he is a massive talent!

Well, to be a Broadway actor, you HAVE to be over the top with your performance. So I'm not surprised...but I also don't take it quite so negatively either.

He looks kind of creepy with the all bald thing, if I'm quite honest  Awesome that he passed the first round. :)

Someone mentioned, I think on Twitter, that he looked a lot like "he who must not be named." I can't disagree! But not a bad looking guy either!

Thats pretty cool. Hope he does good. I guess I will be watching this season.

His performance was amazing! Looks like I might have to start watching the show! Go Tony! :D

American Idiot's Tony Vincent on His Transition from Broadway to The Voice: 'I Felt a Mix of Anxiety and Freedom'

Broadway fans watching NBC’s singing competition The Voice on February 20 recognized a familiar face when American Idiot veteran Tony Vincent stepped up to “blind audition” for music superstars Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Singing Queen’s “We Are the Champions,” Vincent was selected by Green for his team of singers hoping to land a major recording contract. With four solo albums and three Broadway shows to his name, what made Vincent decide to audition for a network reality show? Broadway.com recently talked to the actor to find out.

“The last five years or so I’ve had this desire to get back to the studio and focus on my own music again,” Vincent, who has also appeared on Broadway in Rent and Jesus Christ Superstar, as well asthe West End production of We Will Rock You, said. “Broadway has been a blessing and I’m sure there will be a point in my career when I choose to come back, but I figure with the exposure that a vehicle like The Voice can provide, and because the show is so specifically talent focused, it would give me a shot to get back at my music career with no downside.”

Despite all of his stage experience, Vincent was nervous to face the judges during his initial TV audition. “I felt a mix of anxiety and freedom at the same time because I knew when I hit that stage I didn’t have to be a character,” he said. “I could just be myself and sing how I wanted to sing, without telling a story, apart from that of the song’s lyrics.”

After being selected for “Team Cee Lo,” Vincent will now be mentored by the Grammy-winning “Fuck You” singer during competitive vocal battles against the show’s other hopefuls. “As a producer and artist his scope is incredibly epic and very out of the box,” Vincent said of Green. “I think this is the best possible fit I could have. I have a lot of respect for him and I think we could do a lot of amazingly cool stuff together.”

In recent weeks, a debate over musical theater actors’ abilities to succeed in mainstream music made headlines as Tony winner Betty Buckley and American Idol judge Randy Jackson shared a strong exchange over the subject via Twitter. “One of the biggest struggles for a theater actor is there’s a certain style to Broadway and once you’ve learned a way of singing, it’s very difficult to change that up,” Vincent said. However, he doesn’t expect to face that issue himself. “I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved in productions that don’t really skew towards the standard theatrical avenue. It’s not like I’ve done My Fair Lady. Being able to sing legit rock ‘n roll songs from artists like Green Day or Queen on stage, I think it’s going to be a lot easier [for me to transition] than people would initially expect.”

After Vincent’s appearance aired, the actor received an overwhelming amount of support from friends in the theater community, including well-wishers like Lea Michele and his old high school pal Neil Patrick Harris. “It’s really encouraging that I get that endorsement because I have a mutual respect for them as artists, so it’s a humbling experience,” he said.

Scoring a spot on The Voice isn’t the only current big milestone for Vincent. His wife and former American Idiot co-star Aspen Vincent is pregnant with their first child. “It’s absolutely nuts,” he said of the busy times. “You might as well have it all happen at once, so we’re just going to roll with it!”

I saw that tweet from NPH, I had to reread it 4 or 5 times to make sure I'd read it right. It made me all happy

Hey guys! you all are so AMAZING. Thank you so much for your comments. If some of you who are Facebook users wouldn't mind hopping over to the "The Voice" Facebook page to populate their thread on Tony, with some of your enthusiastic and positive comments i'd be most grateful. This is the thread link:

We really need to get behind Tony if he is to be successful in this show.

Downloads will be crucial to Tony's progression (they count, as much as viewer votes and coach opinion) so please head over to iTunes and grab his full version of "We Are The Champions" recorded for the show. It's totally fierce!

http://itunes.apple....nce/id503317595 (unfortunately only US residents can download it)

If you're outside the US you won't be able to see the full segment of Tony's performance, so I've uploaded it to TTV on YouTube. you can see it here:

I hope you enjoy and continue to support our dear TV!

He's amazing. I wish he would play St. Jimmy in the movie

hey guys! I have a problem and someone on this forum helped me out previously. I'm looking to download some vids of Tony's performances on The Voice, for the TTV archives. As i'm in the UK this is proving difficult due to "region specific" issues. Someone on this forum (who lives state-side) was a great help to me when Tony was in American Idiot, and is a total whizz with this stuff. Unfortunately I have changed GDC accts and have lost contact. If anyone can help put me intouch with someone they know in the US who can help, or if you are that person that helped me out, please drop me an inbox message. I really could do with your help.

Many thanks!

I missed it last night and forgot to record it - was Tony on again, or was it more auditions? ^I just have to say that Aspen is just really adorable. :)

Posted

^ Nope, no Tony last night. Based on the previews, it looks like Blake and Christina's teams are doing the battle rounds next week, but those can be misleading.

Two words:

Holy.

Fuck.

Thanks for posting I missed the show. Ohh Wow he's really good!
