Billie Joe's Song Writing

This is so awesome! Thanks for sharing all those quotes. It really shows you how his mind works with his writing, and I agree with Mike Dirnt. There's a definite honesty in his lyrics, which earns respect and relatability from people even when they don't agree with him, and makes his music that much more meaningful. He puts his entire heart and soul into his writing and lays himself open and vulnerable for all to see.

I think this is why he inspires me so much. It's not about Green Day, though their music is phenomenal and I love it of course. But it was the lyrics that sucked me in and made me a Green Day super fan and inspired so much of my own writing.

Billie Joe talking about news songs on the new albums.

Rusty James

Billie Joe said in Guitar World "The song title is the name from a character in Rumble Fish" "The song itself is about my old punk-rock-scene and the survivors of it-the intial starters of that scene and how some of them didn't really live up to their promises and just became finger pointers alittle bit. And then they disappeared, and just the feeling that Green Day were still here, where are you? What happened to the values that you were bringing to the table? Now you're gone. All the things you were telling people to fight for, and you're not fighting for them anymore. So that's probably one of the more bitter songs I've written"

Sweet 16

"Sweet 16 is about being in a relationship for along time. The first verse is about the relationship with Adrienne when we first met. And the second verse is about the relationship now. And just how time passes, and kinda 'Wow, we're still here and still together."

Amanda

Billie Joe's brief relationship with a militant punk rock girl during the Gilman Street days. She broke up with him and has haunted Green Day's body of work ever since. She was the inspiration for Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) and also formed

the basis for the character whatsername in American Idiot.

"Yeah she's that. All the way back to Stuart and the Avenue. She's an old friend who goes back to a long time ago-kind of like a recurring dream. She's shown up in different songs here and there that are bitter or bittersweet. I wrote the song 'Amanda' from the persepctive of 'Okay now that we'ere grown-ups...' She's got her kids and her husband and I've got my family. And it's just asking the question 'How are you? What's life like for you? This is what I'm up to.' We had a chance to reconnect and talk a little bit. And that was that."

X-Kid

"X-Kids deals with the suicide of a close friend."

Carpe Diem

"That song's about living in the moment. I think the older you get the more you appreciate your time on this planet."

Kill the DJ

"Kill the DJ is more a take on all these opinions you get when you watch television these days-anything from Bill Maher to Bill O'Reilly: culture wars and all that, the static noise that keeps coming at you. And there's that moment when you say "Shut the Fuck up", that's my take on it. Also, the song has a vibe of a party that's gone gross-the feeling that everyone's in the bathroom at the same time doing cocaine together."
