Kristy_TheIdiot Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Whatever are the opinions, it must admit the video is very funny I've made this screens.. is it ok? (I agree with Andres)
kellista Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I find it humorous that there is so many reactions, when really they are just standing there messing around in pirate clothes. Seems like something Green Day would do every day
Vespertine Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Chances are they really liked the clothing line and and thought, 'why not?' To me it's no big deal. Plus, it's not like they've never done anything commercial before.
The Snark Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 I noticed the link posted by the OP says that this was a collaboration. So did they actually help him with the designs or are they just lending themselves for advertising? Just found this on tumblr: Billie's rocking the 'lost a fight with a bag of flour' look. It's the new black.
solongfromthestars Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 I don't personally like the clothes or the idea, but it's like Bastard of 1967 (sorry I don't know your name) said, it's only the same as when a friend gets a terrible haircut and you decide to be honest about it. I'm not saying they should be recording instead (geez, this probably only took a few hours) or that I've lost respect for them, and yes, they can and will do what they want. Like Andres mentioned I don't really see how it fits in with any messages they try to give, but hey, this isn't their music and I'm sure they had their reasons. If they had fun then great. But each to their own, people are allowed to dislike things in the same way people dislike my hair or your shoes.
darenmay Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 oh, why do they have to be so hott? i was fangirling while watching the video.. but i really like those clothes on them. they look real good!
Moyeszet Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Hahaha I love them. Who would have honestly think they would do that? It's why I love them : a week they're like "We've a ton of new material, we're so working" and they're in Oakland, the other they're like "We're so cool in our awesome clothes, fuck the new album" and they're in New york Those guys are like...like... they have no limits! xD And I think they just do what they want to do, right when they want to do it, and fuck the opinion, and fuck the world, and fuck the fans. And finally, they got us to love them even more they're awesome. Who cares if they aren't working? It's music, damn! You don't force it! Otherwise it gets shitty. Their music is amazing because they don't search it ; it find them. They want to have fun and to do whatever they want with their lives? Let them do, they're no machines, they're human beings. I think about pop stars like Rihanna, who get out an album a year. I think it's not even worth a ten thousandth of a Green Day album. The emotions, the lyrics, the music : it's not rushed, it's not pushed, it's slowly polished or spontaneous and genius. We don't want assembly line music, don't we? We want a good album, an album like only Green Day knows how to do. Let them do it the way they want, otherwise it would not be them. Plus : I love those clothes. They really fit them. They're not really in their style, but damn it's beautiful. (and I have to say that Tré looks really really good in that outfit
sara_gd Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 If you mean that you think a rock band doing an ad for fashion is comparable to something a Disney star would do, then I don't really see your point. John Varvatos clothing has an edgy reputation, and I wouldn't doubt that Green Day wear his clothes. Some of the biggest rock stars have supported and wear JV, including Guns N Roses who actually performed at the store for Fashion Week last year. I also highly doubt anyone considers Iggy Pop or The Roots anywhere close to Disney either. The store is also conveniently located in the heart of the East Village, on Bowery in the old CBGB's. None of this is "Disney." And as someone else mentioned, the band has been involved in their own fashion lines and such. This isn't a new industry for them. On a side note - I honestly have no idea how casting theater geeks to perform American Idiot in a Broadway/musical play is considered punk rock, but somehow this commercial for John Varvatos is the worst thing in the world. And I have nothing against the play, but that is probably the most un-edgy thing the band will ever do in their entire career in my opinion. With Disney star I mean someone who cares more about his image, being in the top lists, etc, than the music. I'm not saying it's the case of Green Day, just that it makes them look like that to model for a clothes line like this one. I didn't know that "some of the biggest rock stars have supported and wear JV" though, but I don't really see Green Day doing it, I don't know.
elle1039 Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 If I'm honest, I'm quite disappointed in them for doing this. I've been a fan for a long time and whilst I agree that it's up to them what they do, I think doing a commercial for a successful overpriced designer gives out entirely the wrong message. Designer clothing promotes elitism. Most of us can't afford to buy these clothes. Some of us - myself included - wouldn't buy them even if we could afford them because - quite frankly - they're fucking ugly. Green Day for me were always about the 'regular guy'. Sure, they're worth millions, but they still have that scruffy, down-to-earth, guy-next-door image that most of the fans can relate to. The word 'punk' has been thrown around a lot in this thread. Some people class them as punk, some class them as mainstream... but no matter what you class their music as, their attitude was always 'punk'. Sadly, they're not looking/acting very 'punk' in that ad... wearing those hideous clothes, and posing... something just ain't right.
DenmarksGreenDayGirl Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 It's great when they're so open to new things, and i think it's awesome when they keep on surprising us with stuff like (The Boo, secret shows, American Idiot musical) and now this clothing line thing. And by the way, they look so damn good in that clothes !

Green Day has addressed the comment of people saying 'they're not punk anymore" many times. What they say is that it always starts punk, the foundation is punk.. and from there, it grows into something else. If Green Day played nothing but Kerplunk Style music all the time and that's all they wrote, would you still be like "THESE GUYS ARE AWESOME!"? Yes, Kerplunk is a great album, but hearing those same kind of songs for a full 23 years would get a little old to me. As for the clothing line itself, I totally agree with it being overpriced. But, I think it is pretty punkish. The boots, the jacket Billie has on, what else would someone call that? Preppy? Nah. I think it's great that they're helping a designer out, but maybe they should do such a thing with a designer who's not already so successful.

The bit in bold: That would be more Green Day style in my opinion. I'm not saying they're selling out. That's an overused phrase, and not one I'm guilty of using to be honest. I also like change, and have embraced and enjoyed the many changes in musical style the band have gone through since the beginning. I don't know exactly why it feels wrong to me, but it just does. This is a band who sell recycled clothing, are interested in the environment, build houses for charity and seem to champion the little guy. John Varvatos doesn't seem like the 'little guy' to me, so it feels out of character. Maybe I'm an anti-snob. Maybe I just hate big-name designers because they have a shit-ton of money and are super successful. Maybe I'm just really common and hate anything that isn't. Either way, I still have 'On the Radio' pre-ordered at Amazon, and I still intend to buy any future albums, because regardless of clothing ads, they're still my favourite band and they make some fucking brilliant music.
A Killjoy from Detroit Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 I didn't like it or dislike it. but is anyone else slightly reminded of the music video for 'Holiday' by this? maybe its just the obvious green screen background
Izzard Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 People always look way to deep into what the band does...like really.
Ingrid Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Is there any indication as to when the video was shot? Just wondering.
Penguin Puffball Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Looks like they at least had some fun just dicking around there with the wrecking ball.
biwic Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Is there any indication as to when the video was shot? Just wondering. With Mike's hair being longer like it was in the Misfits' cover video, it seems like it could've been pretty recent, but who knows.
solongfromthestars Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Is there any indication as to when the video was shot? Just wondering. I think it was around the time they were in NY for the Webster Hall show/Little Steven, or it looks like it from the hair. Not sure though.
Moyeszet Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Is there any indication as to when the video was shot? Just wondering. On that pic, it's written "Photographed by Danny Clinch, 2012". And it was in NYC. My explanation is that they were in NYC again past week (you know, new year and all, maybe they wanted to party there.)... but I may be wrong.
Heather. Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 I was gonna say with Billie's hair being at maximum fluff, maybe it was when they were on Steve's radio show. I know this isn't a huge production, but I wouldn't think this would've been thrown together in released in the matter of a week.
Penguin Puffball Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 with Billie's hair being at maximum fluff I don't care what any of you say, I think they look fackin' hot.
Elena Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 I think anything looks sexy on Billie. He's the kind of guy that makes ugly shit look good. and i think that's why they wanted him (and Mike and Tre) to make that vid ;D and well...i think the vid is not really good done...but since the clip is not about "who has the best special effects?", i think it's actually pretty good...GD make these clothes look awesome !!
Schlappy Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 and well...i think the vid is not really good done...but since the clip is not about "who has the best special effects?", i think it's actually pretty good...GD make these clothes look awesome !! well i mean i think the green screen background is more of an artsy thing rather than trying to get us to believe theyre actually on a building... or i hope thats the case considering Mike falls off at the end i actually think it looks really cool especially when you look at the stills. it reminds me of the holiday video. you can clearly tell its a green screen but its a cool effect
Elena Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 well i mean i think the green screen background is more of an artsy thing rather than trying to get us to believe theyre actually on a building... or i hope thats the case considering Mike falls off at the end i actually think it looks really cool especially when you look at the stills. it reminds me of the holiday video. you can clearly tell its a green screen but its a cool effect yeah it's a cool effect, but i usually don't like it when you see that there was a green screen in the backround (even if it's on purpose...dunno why ), but as i said: the backround isn't the important thing for me i LOVE the rest of the vid
