lizziebix Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Or they just thought this would be a lot of fun!
Peace and Rainbows Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I like the posters and the wrecking balls, clothes, mehh....
Lena549 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Ahahaha it looks like they dressed Billie Joe in girl's clothes
DoodleBob Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I actually liked Billie's pirate jacket. It does! But not when you have to wear long-sleeved wool suits/pants in the middle of July! Touche. Marching band rehearsals from 7am-4pm in Florida = Not fun.
Bastard of 1967 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Just found this on tumblr: behind the scenes for John Varvatos!! EDIT: Ok -- not Boy George (ref. my post earlier in this thread), he ain't wearing nearly that much makeup. Instead, he's much more in the mold of Adam Ant.
Bastard of 1967 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 My, my! I swear, if a video surfaced of the boys reading the phone book, half the forum would be OMG THAT'S AWESOME, while a quarter would be, why aren't they recording? And the final quarter would be, they're sell outs (and every variation like that). (This would probably also be the reaction to a new album!) So what's the big deal, really? They can do, and have done, whatever they like whether we, their fans, like it or not. I love that they live outside of the box of just being recording/performing artists. They are artistes and can, and should, be able to explore every avenue that comes their way that they find interesting. It's their lives to do as they please. They are not out to please us. That would not be Punk at all! /okay rant over. I completely agree. They can do -- and do do -- whatever the hell they want whenever they want, and like many of us that's one of the things I love most about these guys. However, it's also our right to not like something that they do, as infrequently as that may happen. In this case the ad doesn't spoil my love for the band at all, it just makes me go: "well, okayyyyyyy, if you say so...." and I see nothing wrong with that. Kinda like how it feels when your best friend shows up with a new haircut that you really don't like. S/he's still your friend, but if you're asked to be honest about what you think, you're honest.

I agree with you Michael, but some of the comments just seemed so over the top in their disagreement with this video, the band's decision to be in and questioning as to why they aren't recording. To me, it just seemed to be going on and on over absolutely nothing. That said, I don't really know why it surprised me or even bothered me this time, since it happens every single time the band does anything. Oh well. Moving on! btw...how do you think we go about getting a video of them reading the phone book?
kellista Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I think it's cool the guys did this. I don't particularly like the clothes they're wearing, but it's good to see the guys try something they've never done before.
Bastard of 1967 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 questioning as to why they aren't recording. Just a reminder to anyone who's been thinking along those lines: we're not their employer. Whatever they do, they do not do half-assed. They'll ship the next album on their timetable, not on ours.
Heather. Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Haven't the time to catch up on all 7 pages but has it been suggested that, besides for them having fun/doing whatever the fuck they want, this could possibly be just an effort on their part to gain publicity/remind people about them in anticipation of a new album release? Ya know, to slowly get Green Day on people's minds again? (For some of us it's hard to realize how they're seriously not on anyone else's minds!) Granted, this wouldn't be the most direct way to do it, seeing as this isn't as high profile as like, a Gatorade ad, but...

American Idiot's on tour and we've already had some ambush shows of Green Day's new material...I really don't think the guys also needed to play dress-up to gain any more attention.
Vespertine Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 This whole debate is related to the punk thing, isn't it? It always is. What I really wish people would understand is that, despite all the things the three of them believe in, Green Day is a mainstream band, well-known all around the world, and will always be invited to do commercial stuff. I am seriously not surprised with this at all and actually, I think it is rather cool. Also, I'd like to say I'm appreciating their personality more and more as the years go by. They've been really open-minded recently, trying different things and not giving a damn what people have to say. Great attitude.

Yeah but, outside of Green Day fans who are going to buy their next album anyway, hardly anyone knows or cares about those secret shows. And the musical is a different kinda situation. I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that they'd hit up totally random mediums like this for exposure.
Fuzz Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Yeah but, outside of Green Day fans who are going to buy their next album anyway, hardly anyone knows or cares about those secret shows. And the musical is a different kinda situation. I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that they'd hit up totally random mediums like this for exposure. That doesn't make any sense to me. The only thing I think explains this is that they like the designer and thought it'd be cool to do. It's way too early to tie this into any kind of album sales, plus, it's a bit ridiculous for a rock band to think this would be the way to about getting your name out there and gain interest in your new music. The biggest problem I have with this is that it's so damn expensive. I mean, I'd rather have Green Day promoting quality clothing than WalMart stuff, but I don't see how it fits in with any message the band has ever given. Of course they can and will do whatever they want, and they should. They don't listen to anyone nor should they. But yeah, that doesn't mean we have to go along and support everything they do simply because it's Green Day. At the end of the day, this isn't about their music, and their music is why I respect them.
gloria123 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 i think billie looks better in the color behind the scenes, he doesn't look as washed out. but on the whole album thing: i can't imagine this clothing thing take so long so i doubt in really takes time out of making a new album.
Bastard of 1967 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Oh dear God, my brain just exploded: someone has GOT to replace the audio track with Fashion Victim. That would SO totally fucking rock! 8)
Annie, get your gun Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I think it's so good to know that even though they care about the fans, they don't give a damn what everybody thinks and do whatever they want. Besides, they're always looking for new experiences and it would be selfish from us to think something bad from them with every single step they make. Boys wanna have fun too!

Thank you for this post. Especially for the sentence starting with "however". Which applies to just about every single thing Green Day ever does which gets made into a thread. (As in that you have the right to dislike something, but that in every thread people get attacked for saying they don't like it, which they shouldn't according to some, because "Green Day doesn't do it to please the fans". Now Marilyn's post wasn't an attack, but it's the same argument)
Fuzz Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Oh dear God, my brain just exploded: someone has GOT to replace the audio track with Fashion Victim. That would SO totally fucking rock! 8) Hehe, I wrote myself a note yesterday to start the next podcast with that song.

It's way too early to tie this into any kind of album sales, plus, it's a bit ridiculous for a rock band to think this would be the way to about getting your name out there and gain interest in your new music. That's true. Like I said, I don't think publicity was a primary motive of this, but it might still be something they see as a "and if it happens to get us noticed..." An ad is an ad is an ad.... there's no such thing as bad press, etc.

Now Marilyn's post wasn't an attack, but it's the same argument) I know you say my post wasn't an attack, and it wasn't meant to be, but yeah, it was a bit. A generalization and a bit of frustration but more towards the why questions as in "why aren't they doing nothing else but working on their next album because, you know, us fans really really want it." Every person has the right to their opinion and the right to express. Freedom of speech. But when it goes to the questions and reasons why, and no one can really answer those, to me it's always, "what's the point to that and what does it have to do with the subject at hand?" I may not always agree with everyone's opinion, but I would never ever put them down for saying it. In this case, as long as it had to do with the video, no problem. Open ended opinions on other topics outside of this video - in this thread - yeah, not so much.
Hermione Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Ok -- not Boy George (ref. my post earlier in this thread), he ain't wearing nearly that much makeup. farley drexel hatcher Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I kind of see it as them wanting to work with someone they respect. You see it quite a lot with Green Day, as though they like to notch up their resume as often as possible. They seem to jump at the chance to work with people they like, and this seems like a similar thing to that. That's not to say it's not also for advertising or exposure or even money, because hell it probably is a bit of that too, but it's definitely something i've noticed. And I don't want to over analyse every detail or whatever. I just enjoy seeing them again.
Tubbie Head Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 When I saw the news yesterday I immediately thought of what people were going to say, and I wasn't wrong XD To me it doesn't make any difference if they do this or not, it's just another thing they do, that we somehow don't expect (this isn't really different to some other things they've done but still) and that we shouldn't/don't care much about. I'm sure they just went for it in the same way they participate in the Simpsons movie, just for fun really. But the video is hilarious and I'm glad they did it just because they made me laugh! Hope there's more!

Plus, they've all shown interest in fashion at one point or another, albeit usually not for such a high-end type... They all like to look good though, and they probably feel sexy doing this. Why else would Billie straddle a wrecking ball?
