Why doesn't Green Day ever do full album concerts?

I think it would be awesome to see 21CB back to front. I'd finally get to hear Peacemaker live in its entirety! (Did that get played at the Fox Theater show? I can't remember anyone talking about it.)

In 2005, I saw an AI front-to-back show and it was great. Throughout that tour, they rarely played the Homecoming medley, so that was a treat to hear it. Same with Extraordinary Girl. There was still plenty of time for them to play the older standbys like Minority and Basket Case, etc. If all they played was one album for a show I can see that might be disappointing. But GD concerts are so long, there is always time for old stuff along with a whole album if they choose to do one.

Has anyone seen this feature from AltPress? It talks about the likelihood of seeing albums played fully live and GD make the list with Dookie :D They think that with the 20th anniversary coming up in a couple of years, they might do some shows where they play Dookie in full to celebrate. Article is here - http://www.altpress.com/slideshow/the_lead_15_albums_wed_love_to_hear_live you just need to click on the little picture of Dookie to bring up the text :)

Would love to see this happen! And seeing 21CB in full would be pretty sweet as well!

I think it's because they don't need to make any more money. Plus if you do a full concert from the same place, that can get boring. I like how AAF and FIM have songs from different shows.

I love that they don't stick to the album in their concerts, I mean, if they didn't I'd feel like I was paying a lot to hear something I have at home, but won't be able to do anything with. That's why I'm glad that Green Day aren't like some bands in that way. For example, when Pink Floyd did full album concerts with 'The Wall', I think (sorry if I'm wrong) I would have thought it slightly redundant not to mix it up and interact with the crowd, like our boys do

I dunno, personally I love seeing Tré run around in drag during 'King For A Day' too much to want them to do full album tours

VH1 storytellers years back played AI front to back.

Yeah, I wanted to say that too, but I wasn't sure.

I'm glad they always play songs from different albums, but I think it would be really cool if they did something like Storytellers again and played the new album completely once. I'm not sure, but I think there are also some songs from 21st CB that they've never played live which is kinda sad, because I'd love to hear all of their songs live at least once.

i'd really appreciate a whole concert with songs they don't play very often! would be a great evening just with songs like letterbomb, whatsername, who wrote holden caulfield, macy's day parade, etc :)

They did with American Idiot and they'll probably do it at some point when there done releasing new albums.

I love that they play songs from all their albums at concerts =D. That was one thing I was hoping before I ever saw them in concert. It's great to see them play the old stuff and all the older Green Day fans going crazy.

I was honestly shocked that they didn't do any full album shows in the last couple of years, since they were playing some really deep cuts live during the 21CBD era. I wouldn't be surprised if they did in the near future. Random fact: One of Green Day's biggest influences, Cheap Trick, started the trend of album shows back in 1998 and they did some again last year.

My long-cherished dream is to see a full album show for Insomniac, but at the same time I think that after a while I'd need to hear a different song from a different era, like Holden Caulfield or something off American Idiot. I think that the reason why they don't play full albums live is that every fan is different and in the crowd there are old school Green Day lovers and "new" Green Day lovers. They have to content everybody, putting in their setlist old songs, new songs and classics like Paradise, Suburbia or Good Riddance

OP Back :D lol Ah Well you guys may be right about not enough time having been passed since Nimrod or even Warning. This is a large caliber band with a lot of songs. However Kerplunk is 21 years old now, Coheed did a special Anniversary show for their first album and their first came out only 10 years ago. It's long overdue for a full Kerplunk anniversary show. They should do it in the Bay Area at The Fox Theater, The Uptown and The Warfield.

Actually I prefer what they are doing, playing songs from different albums. That way they never leave any album behind and just the most demanding fans will be unsatisfied.Anyways some good songs need more attention, like Prosthetic Head,Warning,Who Wrote Holden Caulfield...

Would be great if they played every album in several night like in your last example, because I would get a new performance of every single song they have.Anyways I prefer them mixed,so I don't usually have to stand many songs I don't like.

Prosthetic Head and Holden are such beautiful songs! I like Warning a little less, but it's good anyway, especially for its lyrics. Yes, they should definitely play them more often

Yeah Green Day played American Idiot at the Warfield in 2005 front to back... plus like 20 others songs from their previous albums and covers. (The whole show was like 3 hours!!)

I like the expectation of "what will come next?" so I prefer that they don't.

Plus there's many people who don't like all of their albums. Playing a bit of pre-Dookie, then Dookie, Nimrod etc and then new stuff makes everyone happy :)

I'd really like them to do a Dookie&Pre-Dookie tour, that would be awesome.

I think they've played American Idiot all the way through other times haven't they? When they've played the same place two nights in a row?

And I don't think they've ever played all of Kerplunk. In recent years Billie's said in TWO different interviews that he'd like to play the whole of Kerplunk but they still haven't so I'm not sure I believe him . I think they only did it with AI because the album is a story so it's really perfect for it.

I'm quite glad they don't go in for it because I really enjoy having such a variety of songs from different eras. When tickets for the 21st CB tour went on sale (before we knew what the setlist would be like) I deliberately chose to go to the first night at the O2 instead of the second night just in case they played the whole of 21st CB on the second night. I like seeing songs from all the albums and all the traditions that go with them. Having said that it would've been cool to see them play 21st CB straight through since it's such an epic, at least on TV or something. Strange that they did it with AI but not 21st CB.

They played the entire American Idiot album at the Hammersmith Apollo in London February 7th 2005, and after that, they played some rare songs, it was quite nice :)

Exactly. Same with the Warfield, first AI in it's entirety then oldies. I'm pretty sure they can do it again. If they do a Kerplunk or Dookie theme they should really try to make it old school like just have the trio. They should also dress in plain street clothes and lastly drop the professional rock attitude and go back to fucking around like old times.

It'd be a bit boring if you knew all the played songs before.. ;)

But not everyone would know all the played songs...

No, but imagine it for us, the hard core fans, we'd get a bit bored, I mean it would still be amazing to see them, but it would be a bit repetitive, y'know?

Plus, for the guys themselves... They'd go mad having to stick to the same setlist every night!!

I honestly would love to see nimrod followed by wanring live i feel like that would be really fun.

It wouldn't be boring. The guys would be playing songs they haven't played in decades and some they've never played live. There are fans that weren't around during the Kerplunk days that DO wanna see this live and amazingly some fans don't? Can we still call those people fans? I don't know why people would oppose this idea. They could do a full album and then do other favorites afterword. It's not like they would do 1 album and then call it a night.

I took this thread as a full album concert, not as a full album concert plus extras, so I was just replying to what was implied.

I agree, it would be amazing to see songs from Kerplunk live when so many of us haven't, me included, but what would the chances of them doing that album live be?

If anything they would do AI, which we pretty much already have with BIAB.

It would be awesome if they did do the old albums though  just unlikely :ermm:

Oh yeah, and now I also had this thought that it's us, the hard-core fans that would actually want to see the concert...
