thanks all for comments so far. i realise the subjectiveness of my question but it's good to get a discussion going and see how others rank it against other albums by GD and other artists.

surprised not many people have mentioned Insomniac as I've always thought of it as a fantastic punk album - it's a little short at 33mins or whatever it is but that's part of the point, in being an explosion of teenage angst and making a point to those people who said they had sold out with Dookie.

alot of mentions for Dookie and Kerplunk, which are two albums i love, but i don't listen to as much due to the quality of the recordings. part of me wishes they would digitally remaster the albums but also part of me likes the sound quality, as it's a reminder of how successful they were with relatively small record labels...

I don't consider American Idiot to be the greatest album ever released but it is pretty great. Other albums I like better are (in no particular order):

1. Van Halen I and II. Also Van Halen's album "1984"

2. "Eliminator" by ZZ Top

3. KISS - Destroyer

4. Dookie - Green Day

I would say best album of the 2000's just because of how much attention and awards it recieved. And how many albums have a play and movie in the works based off of them. I think Beatles albums would be higher on a lot of people's lists though.
