the reference thing is real though... i never used to use refs at all!! but i have this weird problem with drawing billie so i need refs for him all the time

yeah, he is pretty hard to draw from memory for me, i should probs start using refs for him too XD

it definitely went that way for me early on in my drawing stage  but i found references get very useful at some point. Definitely try it out if you ever wanna do something a bit more complicated
