GD needs to play more songs. 30 or 35 songs isn't enough. :P

if Billie just went solo.

He could wear one of these things :woot:

As everyone said before, I love the way Billie interacts with the audience. Its something that sets GD apart from any live band and what makes a GD gig such an incredible and unforgettable experience.

But I have to admit I get so excited every time Billie plays any kind of solo that sometimes I think wouldnt it be nice if Billie played all the main guitar parts? So, yeah, I have thought about it. But then I know its something incompatible with his role as a great frontman, so if I had to choose, Id prefer the way its now. He said it himself, the interaction with the crowd comes before playing the guitar! :)

But Billie would not be able to jump with all the instruments on the back. :ermm:

Billie is pretty incredible at playing the guitar. I always think back to one his quotes about people not wanting a 15 minute guitar solo or something like that. I thought we had it on GDA, can't find it now. I think it's a pretty obvious choice of theirs not to over complicate their music just for the sake of showing they can play their instruments. They're all incredibly talented musicians and simply because they can play a hell of a 3-chord punk song, people write it off it's implicite simplicity as lack of skill.

I always think of that quote too haha, I posted it earlier in the thread. Totally agree.

I'm reading the comments, and I'm going to agree with the majority. The reason why Green Day is one of the best bands live is because of the way Billie interacts with the crowd. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like Billie to play once in a while, but I think what he's been doing is just fine. If Green Day was a 3 peice band again, there would be no water guns, no toilet guns, no bringing people on stage as often, I mean, I would honestly think the show would be kind of boring. I've pretty much said what most of the people already said, but it's true. Green Day is better as a 4+ peice band.

I love how they are now. I love how much Billie interacts with the crowd. It really makes the show an event rather than just a regular concert. I absolutely love bands that do that. I recently saw Against Me at Warped Tour, and though they sounded great live, and super loud I might add, their lead singer didn't say one word to the crowd, at least not for the half hour that I watched. I was very disappointed. This is just my opinion but if you're in a band that's popular, you're popular because you have people that adore your music and you need to pay them back for that by not just playing songs that they love for them, but creating a moment in time that they shall never forget. That's what Green Day did for me two summers ago in Chicago. It was truly an amazing spectacle.

I was talking about that one awkward man standing in the background named Jesse or something. Like In the Abbey Road special you can clearly see him just standing there, I think they sound better with only Mike and Tre doing the back-up singing.

Of course I realize that Mike and Tre help out with the vocals, especially Mike. They sound great together.

No, I do not want Billie to go solo.

You need to just shut the fuck up, bitch. *middle finger*

But in all seriousness, all I was trying to get across was that I prefer the sound of just Billie, Mike, and Tre when they are performing live, not that I have a hate for the back-up members. My comment has really been blown out of proportion.

You mean Jeff? Jeff certainly does do more than just stand there. He does the third layer of backing vocals that's there every so often (East Jesus Nowhere's chorus, for example). And sometimes plays acoustic guitar when necessary. I also believe that he plays the second piano sometimes, but I can't be sure of that. It looked like he was doing that in AAF, but I'm not sure.

Watch it mate, it's only the internet. Don't get pissy and start insulting people because they made a joke, you don't want to sound like a youtube commenter

Pretty sure he was just making a jokey response of his own ("You need to just shut the fuck up, bitch. *middle finger*"), and clarifying what he meant.

I couldn't find this to quote Andres but....

i agree... i've heard from several people that they thought he had no skill. i was like WTF, have you ever even seen him play?! yeah some of their songs are simple and they do a really good job with 3-chord punk songs, but that's not all he can do. there are a lot of great videos out there of billie playing, and there are a lot of good riffs and solos in their music. they all are really talented, and it pains me when people downsize them. tre was featured in a list of the top drummers, was he not?! he can really fucking play the drums well. i know my ears are not necessarily trained well to pick up bass lines, but if you listen really hard you can hear some really cool bass lines in their songs.

Billie is an awesome guitar player, he should play more solos live! I think Green Day should work Dry Ice into their setlist, THAT solo would be great to see Billie play live!

1000% agree that they would be better if Jason had not joined and Billie was the only guitarist (in my opinion)

Three people band, not six or whatever, no more back-up singers, guitarists, piano, or whatever.

I think the other Jason is cool though, the piano player, but still I would prefer just Billie, Mike, and Tre...

This is a legit opinion, and I respect it, but I think it's good that Jason White is there to play guitar with Billie, cause in the Green Day songs with lead guitar and rhythm (most of them) you need two guitars. (I would prefer if Billie did more of the solos, but... y'know. opinion :))

I agree with you about the back-up singing. Jeff Matika's great and all, but I think Green Day is fine with Mike (and sometimes Tre) doing the harmonies.

And I agree with you again: Jason Freese is THE MAN. He really can kill it on the saxophone, my favorite is when he does the sax solo in The Static Age!! :)

No, I really was just joking. Wasn't trying to get pissy, lol. :)

I also think Mike does just fine with the harmonies, though I could see how for bigger venues you'd need more backup singing. And this is an honest question... do you guys think that Mike's just not loud enough at times? I don't know if he just has a small voice, (and granted, most of this is based on different concert footage, because I don't exactly remember Mike singing at my last concert), but during a lot of times in American Eulogy videos, he's just very hard to hear even for his solos (which is why the instruments are so quiet behind him).... so I really don't think he could do it alone.

/bit OT there, I already gave my opinion on this :whistle

I think that might be because they set the volume of Mike's microphone soft, because besides American Eulogy he only ever does background vocals, backup vocals shouldn't be too loud in the first place, plus they have other backup singers too (Jason F and Jeff at least, don't think Jason W also does backup vocals but who knows).

So I think Mike could do it alone, but because he doesn't, his mic is too soft for when he does a solo part.

I think having more backup singers improves the quality of the backup singing, because then it's more of a unified sound, I guess. And some songs have three vocal parts, and while it's not absolutely necessary to do all those three parts, it's nice that they can because they have enough backup singers. It would work fine with just Mike, but having additional voices is nice, imo :)

Green Day should come more often in France.

That's my only wish

After the US, the UK and Germany, they come most often to France.

I don't notice Jeff's singing or guitar playing in amongst the rest of the music. But I think Green Day sounds better than ever live. So whatever his singing and guitar playing is contributing to their live sound, it works for me!

He's still pretty awesome even though he's not playing the guitar, Since it lets him dance and jumps around. Jason is pretty good too.

Look at blink 182, Mark and Tom have limited movements (because of their instruments.) hence they can only tell dick jokes to the audience. Which is pretty nice too.
