beejeezee Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 I think it's fine that he lieks to interact with the crowd, but Jason shouldn't be hidden in the back. Him and Freese are always in the background . . .
Of Rage and Love Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 They tried in New York, but Bille has forgotten the lyrics. I remember the first one! Castaway was my favorite song at the time I went to that concert. And they should have kept that snippet of Stuart and the Ave on AAF. Thanks for posting! As for this thread, I think that Billie's crowd interaction is what makes their shows so amazing.
Tubbie Head Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 No, I think he should play the guitar less and mess around more
Mary711 Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Seeing Billie Joe mess up a song is actually pretty cute.
Hermione Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 On that tour they actually hadn't played it the whole time until that night, I'm pretty sure. Hmm that's not quite so bad then. Still madness to ask for such a common song though. I think it's fine that he lieks to interact with the crowd, but Jason shouldn't be hidden in the back. Him and Freese are always in the background . . . I dunno, Freese is quite hidden most of time when he's on piano or not doing anything, but he gets his moments to shine when he comes out playing sax in Static Age and King For A Day. And I don't really think of Jason White as being hidden, he's right out there for everyone to see but he's just not a show off . It's his style to be understated. I loved being on Jason's side because as he obviously gets less attention than Mike if you smile and wave at him you have a good chance of getting a lovely smile and nod back. And his understated way of performing means it's more special when he does something a bit more showy.......a big highlight of my first Green Day show was seeing him thrusting his hips So yeah I like how and where Jason is haha, I think they've got the dynamics just right.
Tamara Rebel Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Look at the number of people reading this thread. Well no, because that would take away some of the crowd participation bits that Billie does, and take away the atmosphere. I watched a Muse live DVD once (Wembley I think) and was so surprised at how aside from the pit, the crowd weren't really getting into it. I think that was probably because instead of talking to the crowd or running around or looking like he had a lot of energy, Matt Bellamy, the front man, just played the songs really. I mean, he didn't completely ignore them or anything - but it was a far cry from Billie's stage antics. It just adds to the atmosphere, I think. Who wants to go see a band live when all they do is stand there and play? I'd much rather go see a show. yeah totally, I first saw Green Day and then Muse and I was disappointing of Muse, I was like "Move! Play with the crowd!" of course after Green Day it was really "Come on!" Green Day is just the best band live!! <3 <3 Nobody can beat them! <3 <3
-Billiejoezee- Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 As long as he runs around and interacts with the crowd, and still plays those epic solos of his, I'm happy.
Nobody Likes Cam Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 As long as they are performing and not Justin Bieber, i'm happy

Freese is amazing and JWhite is very good as well, and I agree that JWhite isn't hidden since he was standing right in the front of the stage. the highlight of my first GD concert was similar BJA humping the floor, mooning the crowd... yep it was like heaven for me
green day is Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I know, but I just wish they were more rough and crappy sounding, not so perfect. Like in the Dookie days, I just prefer the way they sound when it's just the three of them, and ya'know, I don't really like AI or 21CB anyways.... I know they have grown up and matured, they can't be teenagers forever, but ya'know they just were better back then. (in my opinion) I think they could easily pull of many songs from both those albums anyways. Such as American Idiot and Know Your Enemy I don't hate any of the other members, I just prefer the sound of Billie, Mike, and Tre only. They most certainly could not pull off Know Your Enemy with just one guitarist.
Hermione Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Even if Green Day played a tiny club I'd still prefer Jason to be there. I'd miss him . I don't think the extra musicians take away from the connection Billie, Mike and Tre have on stage at all. I still feel like I'm there watching the three of them with the wonderful connection they have between them, the extra musicians are just a nice extra bonus. So even seeing just the three of them in a small club wouldn't feel any more special then seeing the lot of them in a small club to me. i LOVE king for a day, especially because of the recognition the horns get. Freese is amazing and JWhite is very good as well, and I agree that JWhite isn't hidden since he was standing right in the front of the stage. the highlight of my first GD concert was similar BJA humping the floor, mooning the crowd... yep it was like heaven for me Oh yeah they were definitely highlights for me too! Jason White thrusting his hips in front of us was a highlight mostly just because it was so unexpected though
green day is Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 OR American Idiot, for that matter. How bad would the solo sound in an arena on it's own without the rhythm guitar behind it? They have so many layers to their music now, that it'd simply sound crappy and empty if they were playing with just 3 members in a massive arena. I don't see how you can be fussy about wanting the band to go back to a 3 piece when they still have the same attitude and still play all the old songs with just as much justice as the new ones on tour anyway. They bring extra guitars simply to flesh out the sound in the older songs. (Kind of off topic.) I forgot AI had rhythm guitar. The only one that comes to mind that they could pull of is East Jesus Nowhere, but even then it wouldn't sound NEARLY as good.
jon18 Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 How you can say that GD sounded better in 1994. They were great but today they're far better, more experimented, more confident and more talented.
Jaymee!! Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I've had the chance to see them perform as a 4-piece without any of the big showy things they had for their set up on the 21st CB tour, and I have to say you really just don't notice a difference in the quality of show between the full entourage or not. You get so wrapped in the moment of what's happening right in front of you, it doesn't really matter how many guys are or aren't up there, what tricks they have up their sleeves, or what pyro they're going to have. Billie definitely played more than he did on tour, but at the end of it all it doesn't matter how much or how little he plays. As long as he's still on stage, that's all that matters.
pasalaska Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I really can't imagine seeing Green Day live without at least Jason White. It'd all seem so empty - the stage and the music. And I really can't see how Green Day can improve on their live show. That's a hugely biased opinion, obviously, but it's true.
Stephanie. Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 In my opinion, I think it balances out well. During most songs, Jason plays the solos and then Billie plays the part that backs it up. But during the time that Billie does plays the solos, he really expands them and goes beyond the studio version of it. Do you know what I'm talking about? Other than that I think he does a good job of it because he does have to entertain the crowd after all.
Heather. Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I also can't imagine how they could improve more... maybe just mixing it up more for fans like us who can probably predict what parts of songs Billie will ask us to sing and when he's going to moon us or curse at us.... it was fun the first 100 times, and it's still fun, but watching so much concert footage has made it all very predictable. (Not saying he doesn't do something unexpectedly silly at every concert) As for quality with the Jasons... I just remember at my concert, Kaiser Chiefs opened up for them, and whatever, I wasn't that into their music itself, but the biggest difference I noticed when GD finally came on wasn't the music itself, but how much better is SOUNDED. KC sounded like a garage band in Madison Square Garden, and GD sounded so.... PROFESSIONAL. I was really impressed and I'm sure the backups have a lot to do with that.
DeAmbassador Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Any song from AI and 21stCB can't be played without backup guitars, piano etc. As for the older ones, playing as a 3-piece band on small venues and clubs is OK,but on larger venues (like Wembley) a sound with just lead guitar, bass and drums won't "fill" the venue. Also,BJ wouldn't be the same if he just focused on playing the guitar. Wow. Biggest.Post.Ever.
jamesobxfan2296 Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I really can't imagine seeing Green Day live without at least Jason White. It'd all seem so empty - the stage and the music. And I really can't see how Green Day can improve on their live show. That's a hugely biased opinion, obviously, but it's true. I concur. Jason is part of what makes the magic happen when Green Day plays live. Not only that, but as someone else already pointed out, it'd be impossible for Green Day to play a lot of their songs as a 3 piece band. In my personal opinion, I think he would be great as a full time member.
jon18 Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I like to see Jason try to jump with his guitar like Billie Joe. It's too funny. I love the two Jason and Jeff.
Mommy's Little Nightmare Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I go back and forth with this. Sometimes, I wish he'd play guitar more, but I know it would take away alot of the crowd interaction and front man-ing that he does. I really enjoy both of these things. I enjoy the idea of Billie playing guitar more, like at the older shows, but I also really love how much fun he has doing his thing. So I really still can't make up my mind. I guess I think, maybe for certain shows, he could focus more on playing, and other shows he could do what he usually does. But I couldn't tell you what shows he should do which at, as I haven't given it an extensive amount of thought. I just know that once in a while, it'd be nice to see him focus more on his guitar, and less on the crowd... because I really am interested to see him play more live, and see more of his abilities.
