Definitely one of my favourites from American Idiot. I'd never really thought about it before but I suppose it was one of the songs that got me hooked on Green Day too, when I listened to AI for the first time it was one of the songs that stood out. Such a great rallying cry of a song! What a bold statement, with lines like I beg ro dream and differ from the hollow lies, it's everthing I love about American Idiot.

It also contains one of my favourite lines ever, and the most awesome thing in the AI album booklet:

Just cause, just cause because we're outlaws YEAH!!!

I love that so much . And I get to think of it every time I see Angeline's username too haha! And at the end I absolutely LOVE the way Holiday turns into Boulevard Of Broken Dreams. It sounds so cool.

Is an amazing song, but also has one of the greatest videos. The part of the car is funny, but the characters they represent are hilarious! Billie as a nerd is so cute, the guys with shiny jackets punching each other  Tré being a priest (ew, when he pukes) and dress in drag irritating the barman, and Mike as the cop who takes out Tré :D I love those parts

The car is more than funny, it's dead serious. The fun is on the surface....look further below and you get a completely different message. Ever since day 1 of seeing the video, what I've thought the runaway car represents is U.S. foreign "policy" (if you want to call it that) in the Bush-43 era -- we're blasting along with a drunk driver stuck behind the wheel, careening through the world totally and recklessly out of control and with no regard whatsoever for the consequences. When the car sputters to a stop at the end of the video (segueing into what becomes the opening scene of BOBD) it continues to represent us -- worn out, beat down, battered, broken, gasping for breath and wondering what the fuck is gonna happen next.

That's Holiday in a nutshell. The rest of the song (and the video) is gravy....and Sam Bayer totally and completely nailed it from start to finish.

Just cause, just cause because we're outlaws YEAH!!!

Love love LOVE Billie making the English language his bitch again, right there. The Iraq campaign was dubbed Operation Just Cause by the miltary. In that one short lyric you have both "Just because" (we can) and "Just Cause" (what we did) all rolled into four words, followed by what it means: we're the "outlaws" we deplore. Fucking epic...and regrettably, so, so, so true.

[P.S.] Notice the allusion to fantasy in the video as well -- in the opening and closing scenes, Tre is wailing on the car with his drumsticks but his drum kit is nowhere in sight. All that's getting pounded is the car itself.....and maybe there's a message (perhaps "look how masochistic we've been"?) in that for us too.

Been meaning to post about this one for a couple of days now. Can't believe it's taken me so long.

Absolutely love this song. It just completely takes you in and takes you over. Can't even begin to pick a favourite line, I'd end up listing half the lyrics. (If not all...)

And the video? I (very vaguely) remember seeing it for the first time and thinking how cool and clever it was. Although, still, my most enduring memory of seeing this video back when it was first released, was skipping through music channels with my friends, which was how we spent most of our time together, in front of the tv, stopping when we saw something one of us liked. Maybe. If the person with the remote was feeling generous. There was some sort of discussion on which of the 'characters' we all liked best. I believe my response was something non-comittal.

Anyway, that's enough from me, I think. Just a quick sum up:

Awesome song, awesome video!
