I love old Green Day just as much as the new. Green Day didn't sell out, they grew up.

However, I prefer their old live performances where they would just play the songs how they were meant to be played and talked to the audience like they were regular people instead of screaming at them. They also didn't extend a 3 chord riff for 6 minutes yelling "I say heeeyyoooo". That stuff pumped me up when I was 12 years old, but I'm kinda getting sick of it now.

I've been listening to Green Day for a while and I've started to notice that I lean more towards the "Old Green Day." Yeah, their new stuff is great and I love it, but I kinda miss their fast catchy tunes, their "angry" lyrics and all the stuff they contained in the past. But I also like the "New Green Day" too. With time, they've grown up, physically and musically, but I kind of wished that they made more songs similar to Cigarettes and Valentines. I don't know, it might just be me. :) Either way, I like Green Day nontheless. Both "new" and "old" will be remembered by me. :D

I only liked Green Day after hearing and seeing the music video of 21st Century Breakdown (I know, kinda lame). I liked them since the message in their songs at that time was something against the government, and I was pretty much wanting to throw the president of my country down a deep, black hole. I don't remember how I got my mom to get me American Idiot, even if it was just like 2 months back but she did. That album totally made me into a Green Day fan and I've bought most of their albums. I have to say that their old stuff are pretty much effin' awesome, and so are their new stuff. My favorite albums are Nimrod and American Idiot, but my favorite songs are The Judge's Daughter, Going to Pasalacqua, Welcome to Paradise, She... It really doesn't matter to me since Green Day will always be Green Day. As long as it's Mike, Tre, and Billie playing-- I'll always love it. :]

I've been reading a lot of the replies to this thread...and this seems to be a recurring thing (can't think of a better word than that :P).

Why do people hate (or maybe I should say dislike) 21CB so much? Yeah, some of the songs sound similar to other songs, (i.e. American Eulogy and Deadbeat Holiday). But have you heard the Ramones? Some of their songs sound similar. Same with Bad Religion. But does that mean that the music is bad? No. Honestly, I didn't notice the similarities until people pointed them out on GDC. Plus, Green Day tends to 'borrow' riffs from other artists (Brain Stew and 24 or 6 to 4 by Chicago, Warning and I believe it's Picture Book by the Kinks). But you know what? That happens a lot in music. Artists borrow and reuse riffs and melodies all the time. And sure, Butch Vig didn't do as well as a producer as he could have, but once again, that doesn't make the record bad.

If you really don't like the "new" Green Day, then think of the "new" music as a side project. If you really love the old music, you can be content and just listen to that and not get tired of it.

I just needed to let that out...I love 21CB, and I just don't get why people hate it. =/ Green Day is Green Day. Just listen to the music and stop griping about whether it's the "new" or "old" Green Day.

Yeah, I don't understand why people hate or dislike 21CB, it's similar to their past albums. But then again, it might be because it was under a new producer (just like you've stated) but other than that, I see no flaw. Green Day will continue to be Green Day until Mike, Tre and Billie Joe part (which hopefully won't happen). :D

^IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN... NEVER! lulz

Lately I've been listening to Insomniac, well, I mean, its my favorite album and stuff but... listening to 21st CB gives me revelations that I still can't quite grip. I love both.

American Idiot and 21st CB are lame, the both, as studio recordings... but live is another history.

Well I don't really care if the songs are older or new,I just want to listen to Green Day,that's all.I love them all.

American Idiot and 21st CB are lame, the both, as studio recordings... but live is another history.

lame?what are you talking about??

Posted

Yeah, they are lame cause the sound is too focused in the 3 line guitars and you almost cannot listen Mike's bass in the songs.

But live, these songs are amazing, as Green Day is.

It really just depends on my mood. If I’m that relaxing mood I could sit and listen to “Last night on Earth” for hours, but if I’m in some sort of angry mood I could listen to something like “Platypus (I hate you)” – if you get me ahaha?

I personally do enjoy all their music, I think they have developed and grown as artists. they can't stay little boys forever!

Lame? So I’m guessing you think the meaning behind that record is "lame" as well. You’re entitled to your own opinion, but just saying.

It depends. As everyone says, Green Day grew up and their music grew with them. When they were seventeen they wrote music about stuff happening to them at the time. Same goes for the more recent music. However, I am in that stage of life where I can relate better to the earlier songs about having crushes and first girl(boy)friends. So right now I have to say old is my favourite because it means so much to me.

That being said, I can relate to a lot of the newer stuff as well, some of the newer songs get me really emotional. Plus the fact that some songs from 21CB and AI are simply masterpieces, pure works of art. It really depends on the mood I'm in.

Posted

I think a major difference since AI is the meaning behind the songs. Songs like Road to Acceptance, 16, Disappearing boy, or JAR had an honest heartfelt tone to them. Now the meanings are to focused on the problems with society and the government. If you listen to Take back or FOD, yeah Billie is disgusted with someone, but we don't know who. Nowadays its more direct (Holiday, East Jesus Knowhere) and I think some listeners convince themselves that they are angry at the same thing.

As far as the music style, it has evolved, simple as that. All Green Day music has that certain style that only Billie, Mike and Tre can produce.

I love the way Billie's voice has changed through the time, from his teenage years up until now. I really like his grown-up and more mature voice, but I prefer when it's not as polished as in 21CB. I like hearing his rough chords!

I love all Green Day, to me there's no difference. Every album is a different era, there's no old or new.

I like Dookie the most because it made me a fan.

The new stuff is more mature or sophisticated .

The old stuff is more like  , it`s fun to listen to.

"21 st Century BD" is the first album which I don`t love 100% .Actually I`m not sure why ( maybe I blame the producer),

but this is only my opinion.

Same here, don't love 21stCB 100%... And I also blame that producer! I don't like the sound he creates..

Agree! I love his voice in Warning and American Idiot

Green day are still Green day. I mean they grew up, and so did their music. Big deal? :whistle

It really depends on the day, and how I feel. But I usually lean to the older stuff.

Sorry but I think 21CB is not punk. I mean, how can an album with songs like 'Viva la Gloria', 'Christian's Inferno', 'Last Night on Earth', 'Restless Heart Syndrome' and 'See the Light' possibly be considered alongside 'Anarchy in the UK', 'White Riot' and 'Blitzkreig Bop' in terms of punk? It's more rock or 'alternative' whatever that means.

However, it is still a good album with some punky bits, like Static Age, American Eulogy etc. I don't think Green Day ever were the raw edged punk band some people think they were. They are punky, certainly, but not pure punk.

Anyway, the old vs new thing is a bit strange becasue everyone likes different things about Green Day. I prefer old but it doesn't really matter. 'Nothing good can last'.

Posted

I'm not sure I'll ever understand the old versus new, punk or not punk, debate. Because when it comes down to it, old or new, punk or not, Green Day makes great fucking music and for me, that's all that matters...I love it all.

Posted

Oh my god...do you know how many people I've talked to who have said "they're OK. I like their old stuff better", after I've said I'm a fan? -__-

If I had a dollar for everytime I heard that response...

Posted

I like the older stuff a LOT beter then the newer stuff. Dookie and Insomniac are my favorite GD albums and not that the newer stuff isn't good, but it seems more polished. Their older songs seem (to me) more fun and free-formed. AI and 21CB both have a story-line of sorts (AI especially). I also like BJ's voice a lot more when they made 1,039/SOSH and Kerplunk! because it seems more raw.

Hmm, I cant decide, I like the old stuff, but also the new stuff. :D
