Rebel07 Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Actually a pretty good interview, I just wish it wasn't so short.
Kayfabe Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 End of an era, he says. No more concept albums. This is a good thing. Three would be too many. oh and: You mean like the ancient Mayans did? Nah i luld
Noy Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 End of an era, he says. No more concept albums. This is a good thing. Three would be too many. oh and: i luld "I think all of our new records will have some kind of concept behind them." i hope you right
Red Lights Flash Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 While I absolutely love AI and 21stCB, I'm glad that he called this the end of an era. I'm glad to know he's looking for something new. Not because concept albums get old, but because it'll be a surprise what's next, and I always thought Green Day made better music when takings risks. I was also surprised by what he said about the movie. He'd play a part if it's good. Lol and he's making a soundtrack? Wouldn't american idiot be the soundtrack?
gloria123 Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 it was a good interview, and it didn't really have questions that everyone asks but the last question was the best!
Alan86 Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I was also surprised by what he said about the movie. He'd play a part if it's good. Lol and he's making a soundtrack? Wouldn't american idiot be the soundtrack? The American idiot songs would be the soundtrack but they'd all have to be recorded again with the actors from the movie. What he means I think is that he'd be the producer like he was for the AI musical soundtrack
Pres Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 You mean like the ancient Mayans did? Nah that made me laugh
Hermione Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Brilliant interview, really enjoyed it. Loved what he had to say about the next record . Also interesting to see him say something not-positive about Bono! Bit confused about the Awesome As Fuck thing though. I'd never heard of the Ice Cube thing, or of a tradition of people holding up Awesome As Fuck signs at Green Day shows until this tour. And I'm pretty sure the people who held them up on this tour hadn't either. Does he think that's why they were holding the signs, because of it apparently being a tradition? They were really only holding them because of his tweet
TheSaltOfTheEarth Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 That was a great interview, I loved it, especially this part: I get so mad that when I run into these people on the street, they're lucky I don't have a fucking knife in my boot. The only thing we ever did was realize our potential and push it. I did get nostalgic for the old days at one point, but now? No fucking way.
RobyRoom Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 That was a really good interview. I hope they get to see each other soon and strat working on a new record for realz
Malleus Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 There is a lot of good quotes in that. I will honestly be glad when all of the American Idiot hullabaloo is over if it ever ends.

They were really only holding them because of his tweet I think he meant that as in "People were holding up signs saying Awesome as Fuck at our live shows [this tour], [the album name] is a tribute to them". And the Ice Cube thing was probably a funny coincidence or something? Like, that "Awesome as Fuck" is a double reference. also he tweeted that because of people holding the signs up! and then more people made the signs either because of the tweet or because they were from GDC and awesome and got the idea from the first people holding up signs.

I dunno, to me it sounds like he's saying fans have always held up AAF signs as a tribute to the Ice Cube thing. And I think he randomly used the phrase "awesome as fuck" in a tweet about a show, and that's where the original idea for the signs came from. In which case, maybe he was referring to the 'tradition' when he used that phrase in a tweet about a show, thinking fans would get the reference. When really they had no idea it was a tradition and just thought it was a funny phrase Haha I'm still confused! Edit: Actually re-reading it I think you're right! It's two separate things. Ignore everything I just said lol
lizziebix Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I thought he thinks that the AAF signs came from the Ice Cube show too. But I thought Abbey and Bethie made it up and then after he saw it the show THEN he tweeted about it. I think that last part is the correct order but have no idea how Ice Cube really gets involved in this.

Like, The fans did this thing holding up a bunch of signs (starting with "thanks" and stuff) and eventually the signs had "awesome as fuck" on them, which other fans did as well. Also, Mike held this sign up at an Ice Cube show which said "Bad as fuck". I think they're two seperate things that just happen to both relate to the album title.

I think that last part is the correct order but have no idea how Ice Cube really gets involved in this. I think Sanne's right, they called it that because of the signs on this tour, and totally separately from that also because of the Ice Cube Bad As Fuck thing. It's true he tweeted about the signs after he saw them. But I think before that he just randomly used the phrase awesome as fuck in a tweet, like he said "the show last night was awesome as fuck" or something like that. And that's where the original idea for the signs came from. Can anyone confirm this?

So, Billie must think that the Awesome as Fuck signs are a direct result of Mike's Bad as Fuck signs. Interesting. I don't think it's true, but if that's what he believes, I certainly can't (well, won't ever have the opportunity!) argue with him! Edit: Sorry, Hermione. I composed the above before your post posted. I see your point also. I, too, would like some more confirmation on where the AAF sign idea orgininated then.

But now I think he's just saying the Bad As Fuck sign thing happened, and the Awesome As Fuck signs thing happened - but they're not actually connected, they're two separate reasons for the album title.

Well I think they're not related at all and I don't think Billie thinks that either, but oh well. edit: what Hermione said above this post. As for where the original sign idea came from... First there was the Paris girls with their signs, then the Montreal show etc. In that thread, a conversation sparked with a whole lot of ideas for new signs, since people liked the sign idea. Among those ideas was "awesome as fuck". So then someone (Beth? my memory is failing me here) made "awesome as fuck" signs, handed them out, held up at the show etc, then Billie tweeted about either that show (or another show where they held those signs up) saying that it was "awesome as fuck", referring to the signs at that show. I am nearly 100% the "awesome as fuck" idea originated from here and then Billie tweeted about/using that phrase because of the signs at the shows, in that order.

I think I'm overanalyzing this whole thing! But, okay, so two separate sign events that somehow in Billie's mind relate to each other and therefore the second sign is the new live album name. Yeah, I get it now. NOT!! But whatever. Besides I just liked the Ice Cube: Bad as Fuck sign story because it had happened at Lolla!
oda Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I am nearly 100% the "awesome as fuck" idea originated from here and then Billie tweeted about/using that phrase because of the signs at the shows, in that order. It did. This is the post where someone suggested it http://www.greendaycommunity.org/Forum/index.php?showtopic=80578&st=90&p=4026925&#entry4026925

Hermione Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 ^Ahh, mystery solved. Sorry for causing so much unnecessary confusion! No I think we do actually get it now . And as an Ice Cube fan I like the Ice Cube: Bad As Fuck thing too

oda Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 So who's this "gnash" that made the original suggestion that Abbey ran with? Anyone know? I have no idea. But the suggestion was obviously inspired by Abbey's orignal post. And thanks oda for finding the original discussion. No problem
