I'm sorry to say but I don't think I have ever listened to this song. But just looking over the lyrics it seemed like a nice romantic song

ahhh. AHHHHH

first of all, HUGS FOR J'NET.

I don't even know where to start with this song, I have so much love for it. The reason I love it so much is because it's so, SO awful and cheesy. I mean, I can't even highlight a few lines of the song to display this, because the whole thing is cheesier than camembert on crackers, covered in cheez-whiz. It's brilliant in its awfulness.

My favourite part of the song, without any doubt, has to be Billie's skill at rhyming 'need' with 'grace'. Some lesser song writers would look at those two words and go 'never! It cannot be done!' and they're actually right, seeing as the words don't actually rhyme, yet Billie kinda makes it work, so props to him for that.

I got to see this live back on the 20th of August 2010 in Quebec City, Canada - the first time it had been played in 19 years (my lifetime :o ), according to setlist.fm. Sarah (who I was with) and I were the only two GDCers there, as far as I know. We'd lined up since the very early hours in the morning, and had been debating what song to request all day - we were trying to think of THE MOST ridiculous, unlikely song. About 20 minutes before we got let in, we finally decided to request this, so I scribbled it down on a bit of paper I had. Sarah and I decided that Billie would either tell us to fuck off, play a few chords then go onto another song, or just ignore us completely.

Billie started off the 'Blue' section of the show with Going To Pasalacqua (my favourite song), so I was already having a bit of a freak out. As soon as GTP finished, I held up the sign, and Billie looked down at it, and then looked away, and started playing this blur of chords that I just thought was him improvising. It took me till 'you're the one that I need' to actually realise that they were actually playing it. I flailed violently, then just kinda stood there a little awe-struck, while also trying not to laugh at the incredible cheesiness. I don't actually remember a whole lot of the actual song itself, more just my reaction to seeing it. I do remember singing along to the chorus though, and thinking at the time 'what were you thinking writing this, Billie?' I also remember that not a whole lot of people were singing along at all.

At the end of the song, Billie looked down at Sarah and I, and just gave us this cheeky 'you happy now?' smile. I was beyond happy. And that was only the beginning of the awesomeness that was the Quebec City show.

Such a bummer there's no video or audio of this. I'd love to re-live the moment, so I can actually listen to the song live with less of the freaking out to distract me.

RAR.

So they actually played the entire song? Nice. At the Houston (08/07/09) show I also made a sign for 1000 Hours, only got to hold it up briefly before it was snatched outta my hands by security. Billlie played a few lines of it the next night at the San Antonio (08/08/09) show. Unfortunately, that's all we got, a few lines. Would have LOVED to see the song played live in its entirety, as it IS my fave GD song.

Yeah, I REALLY wish they had played the whole thing :-( Oh well. I'm happy with what I DID get! And yeah, all the people around me were quiet, like "what the fuck is this" kinda deal. Ugh. I was freaking out and singing along at the top of my lungs. :-D

I always liked the harmony on "we'll never break as one too stroooooonng"

I also like how the entire verse is just one chord.

I sometimes think the lyrics are kinda cheesy, but I can't deny that I've related to the lyrics before.

The song doesn't belong to my favorites. BUT, the sincerity of the text - which by the way Billie Joe always get off my feet - I really like.

How many young, hard punk kid, dare, or can talk about these feelings?

Then Billie Joe is almost naked in front of me , if you can understand what I mean.

Show more of itself, as a paparazzi photo, because you can see into his soul. A 16-years is rarely permit this!

And yes, therefore be so much love Billie Joe (among others), because he can't conceal his romantic self. And his rebellious self next to it so good fit.

(And don't be mad if I talked stupidity in english...) :shy::)

as cheesy as it is, i do really love 1000 hours. and im almost certain they played the whole song in quebec city because i remember thinking 'wow... for a song you guys never play, you're playing it remarkably well!'

but i think it definitely captures the adolescent heart of early green day perfectly.

Cheesy? ... Never!

I would melt if a guy sang a song like this one to me

It's just another perfect example that shows that Billie is a helpless romantic!

I love it!

I love this song  It's my favourite off of 1039/ Smoothed out Slappy Hours. I even own the vinyl of it, and I cherish that vinyl.

Edit: Just as I posted this, 1000 Hours began to play on iTunes

Haha, nice thread title.

Yeah, 1,000 Hours isn't one my favorite Green Day songs, but I still love it. It's simple, so incredibly cute and sweet! That's exactly what makes me like the song. And the music is nice.

1000 Hours was my first favorite song off 1039 Smoothed Out/Slappy Hours. Now all of the songs are my favorites, pretty much :D

I absolutely love this song with all my heart! I'm not sure if I would if I was a native english-speaker because then the lyrics would have a different meaning if you know what I mean. Yeah, the lyrics might be a bit cheesy, but come one, Billie was only a teenager when he wrote that song and for a teenager I think it's actually a really great song.

I don't think this is the best song Billie's ever written, but I don't think it's a weak song either, musically or lyrically (is that a word? ). The lyrics are actually really beautiful. I haven't paid it enough attention. Looking at the lyrics then actually gave me shivers! It doesn't have a special meaning to me or anything, but it's a great song :D

All the different coloured vinyls of the 1000 Hours EP are awesome, too!

Haha I thought this was like another podcast with Aska in it.

me too

I agree with everything that's been already said... It's definitely not one of their strongest songs, but I still absolutely love it.

yeah, exactly

they did play the whole song! I remember thinking that too. Go us and our brain-similarities

Fucking Chump

Anyway, it's always been one of my favourite songs. To throw everything else away and just give in to whatever sappy, love-sick tryst he was going through at that time and have it come out so cheesy and romantic...props to the guy. I've wanted to hear it live for years and years, and finding out that I was ONE show away from hearing it just kills my brain.

I pretty much like it. One of my favourites actually. I have to smile everytime at the end when Mike and Billie are like: Ooooh!! I always think it sounds like they get kidnapped or something

Cheesy indeed!

In fact it's probably the most cheesy of their entire deep back catalog.

At the same time (also like a lot of the deep back catalog), you hear snippets of the brilliance that evolved into the Green Day that we know and love now. Mike's bass, the harmonies, and the raw, brutal honesty that you find in all of Billie Joe's lyrics. This song isn't one of my favorites, but it does have a well-deserved spot on the iPod.

all very true, and another reason why I love certain songs on 1039/SOSH so much (Going To Pasalacqua being my all-time favourite)

well put :)

Oh wow! I never even questioned this. Billie makes it work so well, I've never noticed that 'need' doesn't rhyme with 'grace'. Now that's my favorite part of the song too.

This used to be one of my favourites, now I only find it okay. Looking at the lyrics made me laugh though. It reads like a bad love novel
