Mike getting quieter

Yeah I suppose visual things don't stand out quite as much on video, especially as the camera is focused on Billie most of the time. I was surprised just how much of my attention Mike (and Tre) took up when saw them live.

But you are right that he doesn't have as much of the spotlight as he used to, I think that's just happened naturally because they put on such a big show so he works more to support Billie. You can still see him taking the spotlight on video sometimes though :D :

Yeah thanks. Listened to all th old stuff today, and the bass is SO vivid. But, you can still make it out in 21CB

EPIC VID THANX!!!!!!!!!!

I've been listening to AI and 21st Century and I was really listening for the bass, because of this thread, and I realized that his bass really isn't much less prominent. He's the backbone of many,m nay songs and it's clearly audible in some songs. Jesus of Suburbia is mainly bass in some parts (I Don't Care's verse, the intro of Dearly Beloved) Mike's got a solo in the "Representative of California" part of Holiday, it's clearly audible throughout BoBD, I really don't see what you're talking about. In American Eulogy there's pretty much no song without the bass.

See your point...

I DO love his bass! The old solos he used to do where EPIC, and I really miss them. *sniff*

yeah i know. That is why dookie is the best because mikes bass was very loud and awesome

He sould turn that amp up

When does HE only sing?

Mass Hesteria/Morden World prt 2 verse, but anything else?

Part of Homecoming and he sings Governator. Of course they don't play those live (I'm alright with Governator not getting played).

^ He sings about half of The Network's songs too. Or at least Van Gogh does :D

Hey, I'm a new guy on the forum, and I thought I'd give my two cents. There's definitely nothing close to the bass on Dookie, on pretty much every song, it's fucking awesome, and really prominent. I love Longview of course, but little stuff, like the one ringing bass note at the end of the chorus is one of my favorite aspects of any GD song. I've played bass for seven years now, and the reason I got into GD, is, when my parents got me a bass for Christmas, before AI came out, my friend told me that this album had awesome bass riffs, so I learned the whole album over the course of a few months.

As for the more recent stuff having less bass, I'd have to agree. In AI, the notes for bass (E4, E2, A4) are the exact same as the guitar chords, except the guitar chords are flat fifths. I'd point to the bass solo in Holiday as awesome recent GD bass stuff or the Grammy performance of American Idiot in either 2004 or 2005, which was really bass-y.

Well, i have noticed it, but GD has changed a bit, the songs are just more "Full" , and one of the things that i loved of the old GD was the cleanness of the songs, you could hear every instrument, and they didint clash with eachother, i suppose that Mike isint doing that much heavy bass as he used to, but now, theres to many sides to the song, so you listen to it all instead. :) in a way thats good, but i really miss the old bass stuff Mike used to do :) maybe and album not so mixed/produced, would do it.

I don't think it's just you. I've heard this as a common complaint.

yep. it's known as 'where have all the basslines gone?' . It's a shame, too.

It seems like all tHeir REALLY popular songs have quiet bass. 21 Guns, BOBD, Know Your Enemy, etc...

Just a thought :whistle

I guess he does have some more recent solos...

Lights Out, Holiday, kinda in Last Of The American Girls, a few more i think?

But aren't those more just parts of songs that are more driven by the bass? A bass solo is more like what you hear in Stuck With Me.

Silent but deadly ;)

It is cool and different when he sings in AE the way it's so very deep and his voice in backups are very high. Off topic though.

My favourite part of American Eulogy is the part where Mike is singing. It's different and that's what I like so much about it :) (off topic too)

Very true. (listened to Insomniac today :P )

Also, it seems that Tre's bass drum (not only him, some other drummers too) is getting quieter. Mebbe that's just me, too.

:P

It's true, Mike is more recently contributing to the fullness and power of Green Day songs. He does have this moments, and they're fun, but they're not quite as fancy. I'd love to see him bring back some of the fancier stuff from Insomniac and Dookie and use them during bridges and solos in new songs...I think that would be a good place for him to mix it up a little. That way, he's sort of giving the power where it needs it and then he's also giving the fancy where appropriate too. I still have trouble playing some of the older Green Day basslines, and I'd love to see those types of things come back. Stuck With Me comes to mind. That's a nice song.

And by god do I love his voice. He's so punk.

indeed) He has a solo at the begining of "Last of the American girls"

Not so much a solo, just carrying the riff for Billie.

Maybe I'm wrong :(

I don't notice his bass is quiet. Probably because its all I hear when i listen to GD sometimes hehe. And when I see them live he's all I watch...

I think their music is kind of more..together, if that makes sense. It's less drums and guitar and bass, and more of one sound.

It's probably because there are two or more guitar tracks on the newer albums. The more guitar you have, in combination with higher production values (especially with Bruce Vig) means you can hear less of the bass. Idk though, I haven't really noticed it. Yeah his bass playing has gotten slightly less complicated, but it still packs a punch.

That and I doubt he's still tripping on acid and writing bass lines :P .

No acid for you, Mike. What you're saying is true, though. The more sound in general (2 to 4 guitars on 21CB), the harder it is to focus on one specific sound. I completely agree :) :) :)

I hear the bass just fine. I don't think it's gotten quieter. If the song calls for it, the song calls for it

Yeah.. Are you a bass player? I think people hear the instrument they play the loudest. I play the drums, and can figure out what Tre's playing, sit at my kit, and pretty much play it. (for most songs)

so, I think your insturment is more audible to you.
